Tobacco toxins trigger bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells aging by inhibiting mitophagy
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2024 Apr 26;277:116392. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2024.116392. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSmoking disrupts bone homeostasis and serves as an independent risk factor for the development and progression of osteoporosis. Tobacco toxins inhibit the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), promote BMSCs aging and exhaustion, but the specific mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Herein, we successfully established a smoking-related osteoporosis (SROP) model in rats and mice through intraperitoneal injection of cigarette smoke extract (CSE), which signi...

Aircraft noise exposure and body mass index among female participants in two Nurses' Health Study prospective cohorts living around 90 airports in the United States
This study investigates the association between aircraft noise and obesity among female participants in two prospective Nurses' Health Study (NHS and NHSII) cohorts.METHODS: Aircraft day-night average sound levels (DNL) were estimated at participant residential addresses from modeled 1 dB (dB) noise contours above 44 dB for 90 United States (U.S.) airports in 5-year intervals 1995-2010. Biennial surveys (1994-2017) provided information on body mass index (BMI; dichotomized, categorical) and other individual characteristics. Change in BMI from age 18 (BMI18; tertiles) was also calculated. Aircraft noise exposures were dicho...

Melatonin improves influenza virus infection-induced acute exacerbation of COPD by suppressing macrophage M1 polarization and apoptosis
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that melatonin inhibited IAV infection, improved lung function and lung damages of AECOPD via suppressing IL-1β/STAT1-driven macrophage M1 polarization and apoptosis in a MTs-dependent manner. Melatonin may be considered as a potential therapeutic agent for influenza virus infection-induced AECOPD.PMID:38678295 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02815-0 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Assessment of the impact of social deprivation, distance to hospital and time to diagnosis on survival in Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Respir Med. 2024 Apr 25:107612. doi: 10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107612. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive condition associated with a variable prognosis. The relationship between socioeconomic status or distance travelled to respiratory clinics and prognosis is unclear.RESEARCH QUESTION: To determine whether socioeconomic status, distance to hospital and time to referral affects survival in patients with IPF.STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we used data collected from the British Thoracic Society Interstitial Lung Diseases Registry, between ...

Investigation of the Association between Bilateral Selective Anterograde Cerebral Perfusion and Postoperative Ischemic Stroke in Obese Patients with Emergency Surgery for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection
Conclusions: A patient-tailored strategy for cerebral perfusion should be considered in obese patients, considering the high atheromatous burden of the supra-aortic vessels in these patients and the potential risk of atheromatous embolization associated with this technique.PMID:38674307 | PMC:PMC11052173 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040661 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Assessment and Application of the Hear Score in Remote Emergency Medicine Outposts in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Conclusions. In conclusion, the outcomes of this study align with existing research, underscoring the effectiveness of the HEAR score in risk stratification for patients with chest pain. In practical terms, the implementation of the HEAR score in clinical decision-making processes holds significant promise.PMID:38674303 | PMC:PMC11052023 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040657 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Treatment Nonadherence among Multimorbid Chronic Disease Patients: Evidence from 3515 Subjects in Indonesia
Conclusions: While the prevalence of multimorbidity in Indonesia is generally similar to that observed in previous studies, we have identified patient characteristics related to nonadherence. We suggest that patient's nonadherence was primarily dictated by their self-perception of health and treatment complexity. With the longstanding issue of nonadherence, this study indicated the need to consider creating patient-tailored treatment programs in clinical practice to improve adherence by considering individual patients' characteristics.PMID:38674280 | PMC:PMC11052292 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040634 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Associations of lifestyle and genetic risks with obesity and related chronic diseases in the UK Biobank: a prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Higher LRS was associated with higher obesity prevalence and risks of related chronic diseases regardless of GRS, highlighting the broad benefits of healthy lifestyles. Additive gene-lifestyle interactions emphasize the public health importance of lifestyle interventions among people with high genetic risks.PMID:38677521 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.04.025 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Nelotanserin, a selective 5-HT2A receptor inverse agonist, attenuates aspects of nicotine withdrawal but not reward in mice
Behav Brain Res. 2024 Apr 25:115019. doi: 10.1016/j.bbr.2024.115019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNicotine smoking contributes to many preventable disabilities, diseases and deaths. Targeting nicotine reward and withdrawal is a basis for the majority of smoking cessation pharmacotherapies. Due to the emergence of interest in 5-HT2A receptor modulators for numerous psychiatric disorders, we investigated the effect of nelotanserin, a 5-HT2A receptor inverse agonist, on nicotine reward and withdrawal in ICR mice. In nicotine-dependent mice, nelotanserin dose-dependently reduced somatic signs of nicotine withdrawal and therma...

Monitoring HPV Prevalence and Risk Cofactors for Abnormal Cytology in the Post-Vaccination Period among Croatian Women
In this study, a total of 321 women attending gynecological care were evaluated. Relevant medical and demographic information, including cytology, were collected. HPV genotyping was performed by PCR. Comparing the HPV types found in circulation in the pre-vaccination (1999-2015) and post-vaccination periods (2020-2023), a statistically significant reduction in HPV 31 was noted, while the overall prevalence increased in the post-vaccination period. Besides the expected HPV positivity as a risk factor, the history of smoking was associated with LSIL or worse cytology at enrollment. For the first time, this population study r...

Antitumor Effect and Gut Microbiota Modulation by Quercetin, Luteolin, and Xanthohumol in a Rat Model for Colorectal Cancer Prevention
In this study, we have tested the flavonoids quercetin, luteolin, and xanthohumol as potential antitumor agents in an animal model of colorectal cancer induced by azoxymethane and dodecyl sodium sulphate. Forty rats were divided into four cohorts: Cohort 1 (control cohort), Cohort 2 (quercetin cohort), Cohort 3 (luteolin cohort), and Cohort 4 (xanthohumol cohort). These flavonoids were administered intraperitoneally to evaluate their antitumor potential as pharmaceutical agents. At the end of the experiment, after euthanasia, different physical parameters and the intestinal microbiota populations were analyzed. Luteolin wa...
