Probing the salivary proteome for prognostic biomarkers in response to non-surgical periodontal therapy
CONCLUSIONS: Periodontal treatment reduced clinical disease parameters and these changes were reflected in the salivary proteome. This underscores the potential of utilizing saliva biomarkers as prognostic tools for monitoring treatment outcomes.PMID:38660744 | DOI:10.1111/jcpe.13990 (Source: Journal of Clinical Periodontology)

Association between Atherosclerosis and High-Risk Colorectal Adenomas based on Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index and Ankle-Brachial Index
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, a significant correlation between positive CAVI and high-risk adenomas was observed. Therefore, CAVI may be a significant predictor for high-risk colorectal adenoma.PMID:38659250 | DOI:10.4166/kjg.2024.003 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

E-cigarettes in Nigeria: A scoping review of evidence
CONCLUSION: There is an urgent need for more scientific investigations on the sociodemographic, economic, health, and regulatory landscape of e-cigarettes in Nigeria, as robust empirical evidence is needed for the effective planning, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based policies and interventions on e-cigarettes control and regulation in Nigeria.PMID:38660005 | PMC:PMC11040567 | DOI:10.1002/hsr2.2074 (Source: Cancer Control)

Perceived coaches' health promotion activity, maintenance of participation in sports, and lifestyle habits among emerging adults: a four-year follow-up study
CONCLUSIONS: Perceiving coaches' health promotion activity as frequent was related to maintained participation in organized sports among males. Maintainers were more likely to have more healthy lifestyle habits than nonparticipants and dropouts. There is a need to invest in coaches' health promotion activity when it is infrequent. A more detailed understanding is needed of coaches' health promotion activity that supports both maintained participation in sports, especially among females, and healthy lifestyle habits in emerging adulthood.PMID:38658832 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2024.2321327 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Treatment patterns and adherence to lipid-lowering drugs during eight-year follow-up after a coronary heart disease event
CONCLUSIONS: In this long-term follow-up of patients with CHD, less than 70 % used high-intensity statin therapy with only small changes over time, and only 25 % used additional treatment with ezetimibe. We identified factors associated with reduced statin adherence that may be target for interventions.PMID:38657552 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2024.117550 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Menthol and filter ventilation in cigarettes: prevalence estimates and relationships with harm perception and smoking exposure
CONCLUSION: The well-documented harm misperception linked to higher FV is more apparent in those using non-menthol than menthol cigarettes. Increased exposures were observed among some non-menthol cigarette users compared with some menthol cigarette users. These results should by no means delay a menthol ban but rather motivate concerted public health efforts to accompany the menthol ban to maximise smoking cessation.PMID:38658056 | DOI:10.1136/tc-2023-058495 (Source: Cancer Control)

Magnitude of Thrombocytopenia and Associated Factors among Pregnant Women Attending the Antenatal Care Service Unit of Wachemo University Nigist Ellen Mohammed Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Hosanna, Southern Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: The magnitude of thrombocytopenia in this study was 14.8%. Rural residence, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and anemia were significantly associated with thrombocytopenia. Therefore, the platelet count should be routinely determined during antenatal care visits for proper diagnosis and to minimize bleeding during and/or after childbirth.PMID:38655566 | PMC:PMC11039013 | DOI:10.1155/2024/8163447 (Source: Advances in Hematology)

Clinical characteristics, proteins, and genes related to interstitial pneumonia-associated squamous cell carcinoma of the lungs
Pathol Res Pract. 2024 Apr 7;257:155292. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2024.155292. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSquamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common histological type of lung carcinoma that is associated with interstitial pneumonia (IP). We hypothesized that identifying specific genetic alterations or molecular markers of SCC with IP may aid the development of novel therapeutic strategies for the same. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to identify tumorigenic genetic alterations and molecular markers in cases of SCC with IP. We included 28 lung SCC cases (14 cases with IP and 14 cases without IP). We performed immunohi...

To compare Covid-19 clinical manifestations and outcomes between patients with active tuberculosis infection and matched controls. This is a matched case-control study based on data from the Brazilian Covid-19 Registry, in hospitalized patients aged 18 or over with laboratory confirmed Covid-19 from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022...
