Opioid Use Disorder among Hospitalized Adults in North Carolina: Analysis from the 2000-2020 NC State Inpatient Database
CONCLUSIONS: Although preventive measures are crucial, including policies that discourage prescribing opioids for noncancer pain and those that target the manufacturing and distribution of synthetic opioids, providing integrated care for patients with OUD and co-occurring psychiatric and/or physical disorders is equally important. These findings suggest the need for a system-wide public health response focused on the expansion of primary prevention and treatment efforts, including crisis services, harm reduction services, and recovery programs.PMID:38701842 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001686 (Source: Southern Medical Journal)

The Effect of Hyperemesis Gravidarum on Macular Thickness, Corneal Thickness, and Intraocular Pressure in Pregnancy
CONCLUSION: In hyperemesis gravidarum, changes occur in IOP, corneal thickness, and macular thickness. In ophthalmic examinations in the pregestational period, especially for women with systemic disease, it may be important for clinicians to take the necessary precautions in this regard.PMID:38698625 | DOI:10.1055/a-2299-3345 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Geburtshilfe und Neonatologie)

Changes in Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Time Across Retirement Transition as a Predictor of Self-Rated Health
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed a cross-sectional association between MVPA and greater odds of reporting better SRH before retirement. No longitudinal associations were observed between changes in the PA variables from before to after retirement and later changes in SRH.PMID:38702051 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2023-0558 (Source: Health Physics)

Stress and depression among male police officers in Taiwan: Severity, determinants, and coping strategies
CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study support the diathesis-stress hypothesis and the job demands-resources model. Enhancing male police officers' mental well-being requires addressing key factors like social support and occupational stress. Strategic measures, such as mental health education, destigmatization, counseling, and community-building, are vital. Policymakers should collaborate with mental health professionals for tailored interventions, fostering a healthier work environment.PMID:38701122 | DOI:10.3233/WOR-230452 (Source: Work)

Investigation of usage, attitudes toward complementary and alternative medicine among cancer patients in Turkey during COVID-191
CONCLUSION: Due to the high prevalence of CAM usage among cancer patients and possible interaction effects with chemotherapy medications, it is important for healthcare professionals to assess and educate cancer patients regarding CAM use. Additional research is needed to determine potential interactions, as well as pros and cons of CAM use during cancer treatment.PMID:38701169 | DOI:10.3233/WOR-230195 (Source: Work)

Pets, obesity and nurses: surgical site infections in the community
Br J Community Nurs. 2024 May 2;29(5):248-250. doi: 10.12968/bjcn.2024.29.5.248.ABSTRACTMany surgical site infections (SSI) emerge after the patient is discharged from hospital. So, practice and district nurses should remain alert for SSIs and address modifiable risk factors, which include helping obese patients lose weight, optimising glucose control in people with diabetes and encouraging smoking cessation. Animals, including pets, are important reservoirs of resistant bacteria. By optimising SSI care, nurses can not only improve wound healing but also help preserve antibiotic efficacy.PMID:38701010 | DOI:10.12968/bjcn.2...

Rapid detection of the source of a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak in Switzerland through routine interviewing of patients and whole-genome sequencing
CONCLUSIONS: This listeriosis outbreak could be contained within a relatively short time thanks to identification of the source of contamination through the established combined approach of timely interviewing of every listeriosis patient or a representative and continuous molecular analysis of the patient- and food-derived L. monocytogenes isolates. These findings highlight the effectiveness of this well-established, joint approach involving the federal and cantonal authorities and the research institutions mandated to contain listeriosis outbreaks in Switzerland.PMID:38701492 | DOI:10.57187/s.3745 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)

Pediatric hypertension as an early manifestation of cardiovascular disease in children
J Bras Nefrol. 2024 May 3;46(4):e20230159. doi: 10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2023-0159en. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn adults, cardiovascular events associated with arterial hypertension (AH) have a major impact on morbidity and mortality. In light of recent findings, AH in children has been interpreted as early cardiovascular disease (CVD), while exposure to CV risk factors in children proves to be a predictor of subclinical CVD in adults. The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association has recently updated the classifications for measuring blood pressure (BP) in adults and children. Primary AH in children is genera...

A Multicenter Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Cxbladder Triage to Cystoscopy in Patients With Microhematuria. The Safe Testing of Risk for Asymptomatic Microhematuria Trial
CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, use of CxbT in patients with LR hematuria resulted in 59% reduction of cystoscopy use. This clinical utility of Cxbladder Triage can reduce the burden of unnecessary cystoscopies.PMID:38700731 | DOI:10.1097/JU.0000000000003991 (Source: Cancer Control)

Beer taxes associate with lower alcohol and cigarette use; cigarette taxes associate with lower cigarette but higher alcohol use
Conclusion: Higher beer taxes were associated with lower odds of drinking and smoking, but higher cigarette taxes were associated with lower odds of smoking and higher alcohol consumption. These results suggest that alcohol intake may be a determinant of cigarette use rather than cigarette use as a determinant of alcohol intake.PMID:38700943 | DOI:10.1080/00952990.2024.2321872 (Source: The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse)

Investigating disparities in smoking cessation treatment for veterans with multiple sclerosis: A national analysis
ConclusionVwMS received significantly less smoking cessation treatment, compared to matched controls without MS, showing a critical gap in health services as VwMS are not receiving dual NRT as the standard of care. Prescription rates were especially lower for male and Black VwMS, suggesting that under-represented demographic groups outside of the white female category, most often considered as the “traditional MS” group, could be under-treated regarding smoking cessation support. This foundational work will help inform future work to promote equitable treatment and implementation of cessation interventions for people l...
