Impact of Using Pre- and Post-Bronchodilator Spirometry Reference Values in a Chinese Population
CONCLUSION: This study generated and applied pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry reference values in a nationally representative Chinese adult population. Post-BD reference values may serve as an additional criterion in identifying individuals at risk for obstructive pulmonary diseases, its diagnostic and prognostic values should be further investigated.PMID:38687500 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202308-1488OC (Source: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine)

Impact of Travel Distance on Surgical Outcomes of Patients Surgically Treated for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Single-Center Study in Ehime, Japan
We examined the impact of travel distance on the postoperative outcomes of patients with NSCLC in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The data of 1212 patients who underwent surgical resection for NSCLC were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into quartiles based on the travel distance from their home to the hospital (≤ 13 km, 13-40 km, 40-57 km, and > 57 km) in Ehime Prefecture. We found no significant differences among the quartiles in baseline clinicopathological characteristics, including sex, smoking status, histology, surgical procedure, clinical stage, and pathological stage. Overall survival (OS) and relapse...

Tobacco advertising and oral health among never smokers: the mediating role of secondhand smoke exposure
CONCLUSION: More individuals exposed to TA have poor SROH than those unexposed, with secondhand smoke exposure explaining only a small portion of this effect. Upstream tobacco policies should consider oral health outcomes.PMID:38686783 | DOI:10.1922/CDH_00053Oliveira05 (Source: Community Dental Health)

Construction and Validation Study of a Model for Predicting the Risk of Pulmonary Complications in Elderly Patients with Multiple Rib Fractures
CONCLUSIONS: The column-line diagram model of pulmonary complications in patients with MRF constructed in this study showed good discriminative and calibration performance in both internal and external validation, which is helpful for clinicians to identify individuals at high risk of pulmonary complications as early as possible, and thus can be recommended for clinical use.PMID:38687856 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Experimental laboratory models as tools for understanding modifiable dementia risk
Alzheimers Dement. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1002/alz.13834. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExperimental laboratory research has an important role to play in dementia prevention. Mechanisms underlying modifiable risk factors for dementia are promising targets for dementia prevention but are difficult to investigate in human populations due to technological constraints and confounds. Therefore, controlled laboratory experiments in models such as transgenic rodents, invertebrates and in vitro cultured cells are increasingly used to investigate dementia risk factors and test strategies which target them to prevent dementia. This re...

Two-part models identifying predictors of cigarette, e-cigarette, and cannabis use and change in use over time among young adults in the US
CONCLUSIONS: Young adult substance use interventions should target high-risk subgroups and focus on distinct factors impacting use, including chronic, escalating, and decreasing use.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: This study advances the literature regarding distinct predictors of different substance use outcomes and provides unique data to inform interventions targeting young adult cigarette, e-cigarette, and cannabis use.PMID:38685757 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13569 (Source: American Journal on Addictions)

Importance of AIM2 as a serum marker for reflecting severity and predicting a poor outcome of human severe traumatic brain injury: A prospective longitudinal cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Raised serum AIM2 levels after sTBI, in intimate correlation with systemic inflammation and trauma severity, are independently discriminative of posttraumatic six-month neurological outcome, substantializing serum AIM2 as an inflammatory prognostic biomarker of sTBI.PMID:38685373 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2024.119691 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)

Sarcoidosis with esophageal involvement: an uncommon clinical enigma
We present the case of a 46-year-old male, a former smoker, with a medical history significant for morbid obesity grade III, hypothyroidism, hyperuricemia, and dyslipidemia. Four months ago, he was diagnosed with sarcoidosis involving mediastinal lymph nodes and is currently undergoing treatment with corticosteroids. The patient presented to the emergency department with persistent epigastric and thoracic pain lasting one week, accompanied by dysphagia and odynophagia intermittently. Laboratory tests showed elevated acute-phase reactants, with no other notable abnormalities. Chest X-ray revealed pre-existing mediastinal ad...

Etiological diagnosis of recurrent acute pancreatitis
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.17235/reed.2024.10404/2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute pancreatitis is the leading cause of inpatient care among gastrointestinal conditions. Despite early intervention, one-third of patients experience recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP). A comprehensive diagnostic approach is warranted to identify and treat underlying factors in order to prevent recurrence. RAP is most frequent among men aged 30-40, smokers, and in those with excessive alcohol consumption. To identify the etiology is paramount to stratify patients according to their individual risk of RAP and for predictin...
