Ketogenic Diets Hold Therapeutic Potential Against Periodontal Inflammation
AbstractPurpose of ReviewPeriodontitis, one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, is caused by the accumulation of dysbiotic microbial biofilm on the teeth leading to chronic inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, chronic stress, and smoking are some of the risk factors for the disease. A high-carbohydrate diet also increases the risk of periodontal inflammation. Modifying diet and nutrition could serve as a preventive and therapeutic tool to target multiple risk factors simultaneously.Recent FindingsEmerging evidence shows that the ketogenic diet induces hormeti...

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 565: Examining the Effect of Genes on Depression as Mediated by Smoking and Modified by Sex
F. Hoth Sharon M. Lutz Depression is heritable, differs by sex, and has environmental risk factors such as cigarette smoking. However, the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on depression through cigarette smoking and the role of sex is unclear. In order to examine the association of SNPs with depression and smoking in the UK Biobank with replication in the COPDGene study, we used counterfactual-based mediation analysis to test the indirect or mediated effect of SNPs on broad depression through the log of pack-years of cigarette smoking, adjusting for age, sex, current smoking status, and genetic ances...

Characterization of mass distribution in a biomimetic aerosol exposure system
CONCLUSIONS: We estimate the fraction of yield to the mouth deposited at several locations throughout the system for a variety of puffing and respiration topographies and show that emissions topography profile and system flow path geometry affect dose. This work provides proof-of-concept for assessing mass distribution as a function of aerosol generator (e-cigarette product), user airway geometry, and inhalation and puffing topography.PMID:38669189 | DOI:10.1080/08958378.2024.2341995 (Source: Inhalation Toxicology)

Health status in selected post-communist European countries: a comparative study between Poland and Albania
CONCLUSIONS: This analysis provides useful information about the current health status of two populations pertinent to the former Communist Bloc in CEE. While health indicators can provide important information about the differences in health status between populations, it is important to interpret these indicators in the context of the specific challenges and limitations facing each country.PMID:38669160 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7804 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)

Physical activity and mental health of medical students
CONCLUSION: A high percentage of medical faculty students (86.6%) are physically active. Differences in the level of physical activity were observed between students of these five universities as well as between students with different levels of physical activity.PMID:38669156 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a8097 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)

Comparison of smokers' mortality with non-smokers following out-of-hospital cardiac arrests: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: After experiencing OHCAs, smokers had lower mortality than non-smokers. However, due to the lack of data, this 'smoker's paradox' still needs other covariate effects and further studies to be considered valid.PMID:38671493 | PMC:PMC11055319 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-024-00510-w (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)

Impact of Prior COVID-19 Infections on Cardiac Rehabilitation Completion Rates and Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Having a prior COVID-19 infection did not negatively impact the mental and physical health benefits obtained by completing the CR program, regardless of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation risk category.PMID:38669342 | DOI:10.1097/HCR.0000000000000841 (Source: Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention)

Isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection with concomitant vascular aberrancy: Extremely rare cases and clinical implications
CONCLUSION: Vascular aberrancy may be a new identified risk factor for ISMAD. Even in ISMAD cases with vascular aberrancy, conservative treatment still can be used as first line therapy.PMID:38664953 | DOI:10.1177/17085381241251426 (Source: Vascular)
