Pre-injury Comorbidities Are Associated With Functional Impairment and Post-concussive Symptoms at 3- and 6-Months After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A TRACK-TBI Study
Conclusions: Pre-injury psychiatric and pre-injury headache/migraine symptoms are risk factors for worse functional and post-concussive outcomes at 3- and 6-months post-mTBI. mTBI patients presenting to acute care should be evaluated for psychiatric and headache/migraine history, with lower thresholds for providing TBI education/resources, surveillance, and follow-up/referrals. Clinical Trial Registration: www.ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT01565551. Introduction Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In 2013 ~2.8 million TBI cases were recorded an...

Seize the Day for a Day With No Seizures: Modifiable Midlife Risk Factors Identified.
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Potentially modifiable risk factors in midlife and the APOE ε4 genotype were positively associated with risk of developing late-onset epilepsy. Although stroke and dementia were both associated with late-onset epilepsy, vascular and lifestyle risk factors were significant even in the absence of stroke or dementia. PMID: 30838917 [PubMed]

Inflammatory markers are beneficial in the early stages of cerebral venous thrombosis
Conclusions: We suggest that NLR, PLR, CRP, ESR, and bilirubin can be used in clinical practice for prediction of CVT in suspected patients as they are inexpensive parameters and widely available.

Acute alcohol intoxication may cause delay in stroke treatment – case reports
The signs and symptoms of acute alcohol intoxication resemble those of vertebrobasilar stroke. Due to their shared symptoms including double vision, nystagmus, dysarthria, and ataxia, the differential diagnosi...

Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion Causing Acute Cranial Neuropathies
A 54-year-old male with a history of left posterior parietal ischemic stroke, epilepsy, tobacco and marijuana smoking, and alcohol abuse, presented with acute left visual loss and diplopia. On examination, he had reduced left visual acuity and a left oculomotor nerve palsy. CT angiogram from aortic arch to circle of Willis identified extensive thrombus occluding the left common and internal carotid arteries, extending to the left ophthalmic artery. This case demonstrates acute visual loss from ophthalmic artery occlusion, and left oculomotor nerve palsy from occlusion of the inferolateral trunk of the internal carotid arte...

HIV is associated with endothelial activation despite ART, in a sub-Saharan African setting
Conclusions HIV infection is associated with endothelial activation despite antiretroviral treatment. Our findings underscore the need for larger clinical cohorts to better understand the contribution of this perturbation of the endothelial function to the increasing burden of cardiovascular diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.

Age ‐specific clinical characteristics and outcome in patients over 60 years old with large hemispheric infarction
ConclusionsLarge hemispheric infarction patients over 60  years old were a little more than those aged ≤60 years and constitute more than half of those suffered from malignant brain edema and two thirds of in‐hospital death and 3‐month mortality. The elderly had more cardio‐origin risk factors, received less aggressive hospital treatment, and sh owed higher risk of unfavorable outcome than the younger.

Medication Adherence of Statin Users after Acute Ischemic Stroke
Although statins are established therapy for the secondary prevention of ischemic stroke, factors associated with adherence to statin treatment following ischemic stroke are not well known. To address this, we assessed the 6-month statin adherence using 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Of 991 patients, 65.6% were adherent to statin at 6-month after discharge. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that patients ’ awareness of hyperlipidemia (OR 1.62; 95% CI 1.07–2.43), large artery stroke subtype (versus non-large artery stroke, OR 1.79; 95% CI 1.19–2.68), and ...
