The Role of Mitochondrial Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) in Neuropathology and Neurodegeneration.
Authors: Chen CH, Joshi AU, Mochly-Rosen D Abstract Aldehydes-induced toxicity has been implicated in many neurodegenerative diseases. Exposure to reactive aldehydes from (1) alcohol and food metabolism; (2) environmental pollutants, including car, factory exhausts, smog, pesticides, herbicides; (3) metabolism of neurotransmitters, amino acids and (4) lipid peroxidation of biological membrane from excessive ROS, all contribute to 'aldehydic load' that has been linked to the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, the α, β-unsaturated aldehydes derived from lipid peroxidation, 4-hydroxynonenal (4-H...

Protective Effect of 4-Methoxy Benzyl Alcohol on the Blood –Brain Barrier after Cerebral Ischemia Reperfusion Injury
Damage of the blood –brain barrier (BBB) during the process of cerebral ischemic injury is a key factor that influences the therapeutic efficacy to the cerebral ischemic injury. This work was designed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of 4-methoxy benzyl alcohol (4-MA) on the BBB by deve loping a cerebral ischemia/reperfusion model of rats (MCAO/R). The MCAO/R was developed through a thread embolism method. The neurologic scales, the brain infarct rate, and the Evans blue (EB) contents of the brains were detected.

Gender differences in physical activity and health-related behaviors among stroke survivors: data from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
CONCLUSION: In order to reduce noted gender disparities in physical activity following stroke, more focused effort to increase physical activity in women, especially with lower socioeconomic status, has to be considered. PMID: 28326897 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical Reasoning: A 43-year-old woman with right limb weakness
A 43-year-old woman presented with a 4-day history of right limb weakness. While biking 4 days earlier, she felt a weakness in her right hand and leg. She had a history of hypertension for more than 2 years, and was taking extended-release nifedipine tablets (40 mg) and perindopril (4 mg) daily, but her blood pressure was difficult to control (fluctuations of 150–180/90–115 mm Hg). The patient did not smoke or drink alcohol, and had no family history of similar diseases.

Activation of NLRP3 inflammasome by cholesterol crystals in alcohol consumption induces atherosclerotic lesions
Publication date: Available online 21 February 2017 Source:Brain, Behavior, and Immunity Author(s): P.M. Abdul-Muneer, Saleena Alikunju, Vikas Mishra, Heather Schuetz, Adam M. Szlachetka, Ellen L. Burnham, James Haorah Epidemiological studies showed a strong association between alcoholism and incidence of stroke, for which the underlying causative mechanisms remain to be understood. Here we found that infiltration of immune cells and deposition of cholesterol at the site of brain artery/capillary injury induced atherosclerosis in chronic alcohol (ethanol) consumption in the presence or absence of high-fat diet. Lifestyle Factors and Early Clinical Outcome in Patients With Acute Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Healthy lifestyle was not associated with a lower risk of adverse stroke outcomes, in particularly among men. However, underweight may be a particular concern being associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes among both sexes.

Endovascular Treatment of Noncavernous Dural Arteriovenous Fistulas: Analysis of Outcomes with and without Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol
Noncavernous dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are uncommon lesions that can be treated from an endovascular approach using various embolic materials. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our outcomes for endovascular treatment of DAVFs with and without the use of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH).

Cannabis, Tobacco, Alcohol Use, and the Risk of Early Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—We found no evident association between cannabis use in young adulthood and stroke, including strokes before 45 years of age. Tobacco smoking, however, showed a clear, dose–response shaped association with stroke.

Posterior hippocampal stroke presenting with transient global amnesia.
We describe a patient with presenting symptoms of TGA, but affected by an ischemic hippocampal stroke. The computed tomography angiography helped the etiologic diagnosis showing an hemodynamic stenosis of the posterior P2P segment. Interestingly, neuropsychological features were consistent with those found in patients suffering TGA. PMID: 28004602 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cessation of Smoking and Alcohol Addiction Following Thalamic Hemorrhage
We describe a case of thalamic intracerebral hemorrhage leading to cessation of smoking. Case Report: A 53-year-old female presented to the emergency department with right-sided weakness and dysarthria. Initial systolic blood pressure was 220 mm Hg. Computed tomography scan showed a left thalamic hemorrhage with associated edema and hemorrhage extending into the left lateral and third ventricle. She recovered uneventfully and was discharged to inpatient rehabilitation and eventually transitioned home. Three months later in the clinic, she reported that following the stroke, she abruptly stopped smoking without any smoking...
