The Tricuspid Valve: A Review of Pathology, Imaging, and Current Treatment Options: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001232. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTricuspid valve disease is an often underrecognized clinical problem that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, patients will often present late in their disease course with severe right-sided heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and life-limiting symptoms that have few durable treatment options. Traditionally, the only treatment for tricuspid valve disease has been medical therapy or surgery; however, there have been increasing interest and success with the use of transcatheter tricuspid valve ther...

The Association Between Unintended Pregnancy and Perinatal Outcomes in Low ‐Risk Pregnancies: A Retrospective Registry Study in the Netherlands
This study used data (N = 9803) from a Dutch nationally representative registry of people with low-risk pregnancies receiving primary midwife-led care in the Netherlands between 2012 and 2020. Using logistic (mediation) regression analyses adjusted for potential confounders we investigated associations between unintended pregnancy and neonatal outcomes (low Apgar score, small for gestational age, and prematurity), parental morbidity (hypertension and gestational diabetes mellitus), and obstetric interventions (induction of labor, pain medication, assisted vaginal birth, and cesarean birth) and whether delayed initiation of...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1671: Association between Periodontitis and Hematologic Cancer: An NHIRD Cohort Study in Taiwan
Conclusions: This study found that being male and having hypertension were the significant risk factors for hematological malignancies. Moreover, the association between chronic periodontitis and specific subtypes of hematologic cancers was confirmed. (Source: Cancers)

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and cardiovascular disease risk: a Mendelian randomisation study
Conclusions Genetic liability to HDPs is associated with higher CVD risk, lower blood pressure levels and earlier hypertension diagnosis. Our study suggests similar findings in ever pregnant women, nulligravidae and men, implying biological mechanisms relating to HDPs are causally related to CVD risk. (Source: Heart)

Effect of proteinuria on the rapid kidney function decline in chronic kidney disease depends on the underlying disease: A post hoc analysis of the BRIGHTEN study
The rapidity of kidney function decline in patients with nephrosclerosis (NS) is less rapid than in those with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) presumably because of a relatively low level of proteinuria [1 –3]. Several studies demonstrated that chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with NS undergo a favourable clinical course as compared with those with DKD [1–4]. The presence of diabetes and proteinuria, but not that of hypertension, were independent predictors for rapid kidney function decline i n Taiwanese CKD patients [5]. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in an adult male patient: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionIdiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) may occur in association with SARS-CoV-2 infection and should be considered when making a differential diagnosis for headache and blurring of vision. COVID-19 may play a role in the development of intracranial hypertension, even in the absence of known risk factors. Early diagnosis and treatment of IIH has paramount importance to prevent vision loss and other morbidities. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Breaking the Barrier: The Role of Gut Epithelial Permeability in the Pathogenesis of Hypertension
AbstractPurpose of the ReviewTo review what intestinal permeability is and how it is measured, and to summarise the current evidence linking altered intestinal permeability with the development of hypertension.Recent FindingsIncreased gastrointestinal permeability, directly measuredin vivo, has been demonstrated in experimental and genetic animal models of hypertension. This is consistent with the passage of microbial substances to the systemic circulation and the activation of inflammatory pathways. Evidence for increased gut permeability in human hypertension has been reliant of a handful of blood biomarkers, with no stu...

B-cells in pulmonary arterial hypertension: friend, foe or bystander?
There is an unmet need for new therapeutic strategies that target alternative pathways to improve the prognosis of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). As immunity has been involved in the development and progression of vascular lesions in PAH, we review the potential contribution of B-cells in its pathogenesis and evaluate the relevance of B-cell-targeted therapies. Circulating B-cell homeostasis is altered in PAH patients, with total B-cell lymphopenia, abnormal subset distribution (expansion of naïve and antibody-secreting cells, reduction of memory B-cells) and chronic activation. B-cells are re...

Safety and complications of continuation of aspirin therapy in patients undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic simple prostatectomy
AbstractTo evaluate the safety and feasibility of continued perioperative aspirin at the time of robotic assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP). We performed a retrospective review of our IRB approved institutional database of patients who underwent RASP between 2013 and 2022. Comparative groups included patients taking aspirin in the perioperative period and those not taking aspirin pre-operatively. The primary outcome was any post-operative bleeding related complication using the modified Clavien –Dindo classification. Secondary outcomes included the identification of risk factors for increased blood loss in the entire s...

Cardiovascular diseases in Switzerland - Prevalence and care
Praxis (Bern 1994). 2024 Mar;113(3):57-66.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent a significant health problem worldwide and in Switzerland. Despite preventive measures and advances in treatment, cardiovascular diseases still lead to a significant number of hospitalizations in Switzerland (133 000 in 2021) and are for responsible for almost 1/3 of all deaths (19 600 in 2021). Emergency care for acute cardiovascular events now has a very high standard in Switzerland compared to other countries. However, there is a large discrepancy between evidence and daily practice (evidence-performance gap) in cardiovascular risk...

Efficacy of a Telemonitoring System as a Complementary Strategy in the Treatment of Patients With Heart Failure: Randomized Clinical Trial
Comput Inform Nurs. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.1097/CIN.0000000000001115. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpisodes of decompensation are the main cause of hospital admissions in patients with heart failure. For this reason, the use of mobile apps emerges as an excellent strategy to improve coverage, real-time monitoring, and timeliness of care. ControlVit is an electronic application for early detection of complications studied within the context of a tertiary university hospital. Patients were randomized to the use of ControlVit versus placebo, during a 6-month follow-up. The primary outcome was the difference in numbers of readm...
