Clinical and Growth Correlates of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Preterm Infants with Surgical Necrotizing Enterocolitis and Intestinal Perforation
Conclusion Infants who develop severe ROP following surgical NEC/SIP are likely to be younger, smaller, have been exposed to more O2, develop AKI, and grow poorly compared with those did not develop severe ROP. Type 1 Narcolepsy in Pregnancy: A Case Report and Review of Literature
Conclusion Type 1 narcolepsy can be treated with medications after consideration of risks and benefits. For patients who are symptomatic at the time of birth, cesarean section may be the preferred mode of delivery in women with type 1 narcolepsy. An unusual case of severe asphyxia with the fetal position unexpectedly inverted in a malformed uterus: a case report
ConclusionsWhen considering the clinical course of this case on the basis of the medical reports, we suspected that uterine anomalies and changes in intrauterine pressure could cause fetal malpresentation and adverse neonatal outcomes. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Association between Sleeping Position and Cardiac Output Compromise in Neonates: Current Evidence and Future Research
The physiological effect of supine versus prone positions on hemodynamics has been investigated. Among in-hospital patients with critical respiratory illness, the prone position may enhance oxygenation.1 However, the prone position comes with potential adverse effects, encompassing compromised hemodynamics, autonomic control, and diminished sleep arousal.2 The lack of adequate protective responses to hemodynamic shifts while in the prone position was linked with pathological occurrences in infants, notably sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Traffic noise causes lifelong harm to baby birds
If you think it’s hard to chat next to a busy highway, try raising a nestling there. A new experiment on developing birds shows traffic noise can slow their growth and lead to lifelong impairments. The finding raises new concerns about the effect of noise pollution on wildlife—and humans as well. “I’m surprised by these effects,” says Clinton Francis, an ecologist at California Polytechnic State University who was not involved in the work. He says the new paper, published today in Science , “provides very strong evidence for a direct impact of noise.” Researchers already knew ...

Maternal awareness, acceptability and willingness towards respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination during pregnancy in Ireland
ConclusionsDespite low levels of maternal awareness of RSV, pregnant women in Ireland are open to availing of antenatal vaccination. Maternal immunization strategies need to focus on infant's protection from RSV-associated ALRI along with vaccine safety, and build on an interdisciplinary collaboration of maternal, neonatal, primary care and public health services. Mental Illness in the 2 Years Prior to Pregnancy in a Population With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Cross-Sectional Study: La maladie mentale dans les deux ans pr écédant une grossesse dans une population souffrant de lésion cérébrale traumatique : une étude transversale
CONCLUSIONS: Females with TBI, and especially those with a recent intentional TBI, have a high prevalence of mental illness before pregnancy. They may benefit from mental health screening and support in the post-injury, preconception, and perinatal periods.PMID:38659409 | DOI:10.1177/07067437241249957 (Source: Canadian Journal of Psychiatry)

The role of chest X-ray in the diagnosis of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome: a systematic review concerning low-resource birth scenarios
CONCLUSION: CXR remains an important diagnostic tool for NRDS. Despite its continued use in scientific reports, the findings suggest that the study's outcomes may not fully reflect the current global clinical practices, especially in low-resource settings where the early NRDS approach remains a challenge for neonatal survival.Trial registration: PROSPERO number CRD42022336480.PMID:38660779 | PMC:PMC11047214 | DOI:10.1080/16549716.2024.2338633 (Source: Global Health Action)

A dual-channel electrochemical biosensor enables concurrent detection of pathogens and antibiotic resistance
Biosens Bioelectron. 2024 Apr 20;257:116314. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2024.116314. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiarrheagenic E. coli infections, commonly treated with β-lactam antibiotics, contribute to antibiotic resistance - a pressing public health concern. Rapid monitoring of pathogen antibiotic resistance is vital to combat antimicrobial spread. Current bacterial diagnosis methods identify pathogens or determine antibiotic resistance separately, necessitating multiple assays. There is an urgent need for tools that simultaneously identify infectious agents and their antibiotic resistance at the point of care (POC). We de...

Mutational spectrum of CFTR in cystic fibrosis patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary manifestations
CONCLUSION: The study reports novel and reported variants in the CFTR gene in CF patients in Pakistani population having distinct phenotypes. It also emphasizes screening suspected Pakistani CF patients for the p. (Met1Thr) variant because of its increased observance and prevalence in the study. Moreover, the findings also signify searching for additional pathogenic variants in the genome of CF patients, which may modify the phenotypes. The findings contribute valuable information for the diagnosis, genetic counseling, and potential therapeutic strategies for CF patients in Pakistan.PMID:38662334 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-0...
