Breast milk-mediated exposure to dioxins and antigen in infancy enhances antigen-specific antibody production capacity in adulthood in mice
J Toxicol Sci. 2024;49(5):209-218. doi: 10.2131/jts.49.209.ABSTRACTThe immune system is sensitive to many chemicals. Among dioxin compounds, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodizenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is the most toxic environmental pollutant. The effects of perinatal maternal exposure to dioxins may persist into childhood. However, there have been no reports to date on the effects of exposure to dioxins during infancy, when the immune organs are developing. Therefore, we investigated the effects of TCDD and antigen exposure during lactation on immune function, especially antibody production capacity, in adult mice. Beginning the day after...

Severe neonatal thrombocytopenia due to anti-HPA-4b alloantibodies: Third report described in a Caucasian mother
CONCLUSION: We described the third case of anti-HPA-4b alloantibody discovered in a Caucasian mother. This case strengthens the need for reference laboratory to genotype a panel of HPA alleles reflecting local genetic population diversity and for crossmatch of maternal serum with fresh paternal platelets in clinical suspected cases of neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.PMID:38693097 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17863 (Source: Transfusion)

Contribution of microglia to the epileptiform activity that results from neonatal hypoxia
Neuropharmacology. 2024 Apr 29:109968. doi: 10.1016/j.neuropharm.2024.109968. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroglia are described as the immune cells of the brain, their immune properties have been extensively studied since first described, however, their neural functions have only been explored over the last decade. Microglia have an important role in maintaining homeostasis in the central nervous system by surveying their surroundings to detect pathogens or damage cells. While these are the classical functions described for microglia, more recently their neural functions have been defined; they are critical to the matu...

Listening to Black Women's Perspectives of Birth Centers and Midwifery Care: Advocacy, Protection, and Empowerment
DiscussionThe Black women interviewed in this study emphasized the prevalence of racism and discrimination in perinatal health care encounters, a reflection consistent with current literature. Black women also expressed a desire to use birth centers and midwifery care but identified the barriers in Texas that impede access. Study findings highlight the need to address barriers to promote equitable perinatal health care access for Black women. (Source: Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health)

Does the use of bisphosphonates during pregnancy affect fetal outcomes? A systematic review
ConclusionAlthough previous reports have linked BPs before or during pregnancy with adverse neonatal outcomes, these associations should be interpreted with caution. Given the complexity of these findings, further research is necessary to provide more definitive insights to guide clinical decisions regarding the use of BPs in pregnant women. A late-preterm neonate with germinal matrix hemorrhages and rapidly resolving abnormal vertical eye movements
Background: Neonates may present with several involuntary eye movements, such as transient neonatal opsoclonus (TNO), nystagmus, seizures and paroxysmal tonic upgaze and downgaze. Even if often transient and benign, some can be accompanied by neurological deficits that can persist overtime, and central nervous system structural lesions or genetic pathologies ought to be excluded. Factors Influencing Iatrogenic Skin Injury in Neonates and Nursing Strategies
CONCLUSION: Length of stay, orotracheal intubation use, and gastric tube use are independent risk factors for iatrogenic skin injury in neonates. Hospital stays and unnecessary use of orotracheal intubation and gastric tube should be reduced in future clinical management. Attention should be paid to strengthening skin observation and care, keeping skin dry and clean, and preventing iatrogenic skin injury.PMID:38687850 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Risk factors and outcome of antenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia following in-utero transfer in a busy public-sector tertiary care center in North India
Monaldi Arch Chest Dis. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.4081/monaldi.2024.2880. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe analyzed the risk factors and outcomes of antenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) from a tertiary-care children's hospital following in-utero transfer. A total of 41 antenatally detected cases of CDH were included; 30 were live-born and 11 were still-born. The primary outcome was postnatal survival. The secondary outcome was the probable factor affecting survival. No medical termination of the pregnancy was done. The mean gestational age at diagnosis was 23 weeks. The diagnostic accuracy of antenatal ul...
