Neonatal herpes: case series in two obstetric centres over a 10-year period (2013-2023), France
Conclusion: This case series confirms that neonates at risk for HSV disease and poor outcome are those born to HSV-seronegative mothers, preterm infants, and those who received acyclovir after onset of symptoms (mainly because mothers did not present evidence of acute HSV infection). Our study confirms the major role of HSV-1 and the frequency of its early post-natal acquisition. What is known: • Neonatal herpes simplex virus infection is rare but motality and morbidity rates are high after disseminted disease and encephalitis. National recommendations exist worldwide but mangement of this disease is not always easy. Wha...

Examining the associations between microglia genetic capacity, early life exposures and white matter development at the level of the individual
Brain Behav Immun. 2024 Apr 25:S0889-1591(24)00387-8. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2024.04.038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere are inter-individual differences in susceptibility to the influence of early life experiences for which the underlying neurobiological mechanisms are poorly understood. Microglia play a role in environmental surveillance and may influence individual susceptibility to environmental factors. As an index of neurodevelopment, we estimated individual slopes of mean white matter fractional anisotropy (WM-FA) across three time-points (age 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5 years) for 351 participants. Individual variation in m...

Enteral plasma supports brain repair in newborn pigs after birth asphyxia
We present a new clinically relevant animal model of moderate birth asphyxia inducing structural and functional brain damage. The components in plasma that support brain repair remain to be identified but may represent a therapeutic potential for infants and animals after birth asphyxia.PMID:38677626 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2024.04.032 (Source: Brain, Behavior, and Immunity)

Association between Antenatal Vaginal Bleeding and Adverse Perinatal Outcomes in Placenta Accreta Spectrum
Conclusions: Antenatal vaginal bleeding in the setting of PAS is associated with increased emergent deliveries, earlier gestational ages, and maternal composite morbidity. This important antenatal event may aid in not only counseling patients but also in the coordination of multidisciplinary teams caring for these complex patients.PMID:38674323 | PMC:PMC11052054 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040677 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy during COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the total incidence of ICP appeared to be lower. However, this reduction was primarily observed in cases of mild ICP, potentially indicating challenges in detection or reduced access to medical services during this period. The incidence of moderate and severe ICP remained unchanged, suggesting that these forms of the condition were unaffected by the pandemic's circumstances.PMID:38674322 | PMC:PMC11052128 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040676 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Differential impact of prenatal PTSD symptoms and preconception trauma exposure on placental < em > NR3C1 < /em > and < em > FKBP5 < /em > methylation
Stress. 2024 Jan;27(1):2321595. doi: 10.1080/10253890.2024.2321595. Epub 2024 Apr 26.ABSTRACTPerinatal stress is associated with altered placental methylation, which plays a critical role in fetal development and infant outcomes. This proof-of-concept pilot study investigated the impact of lifetime trauma exposure and perinatal PTSD symptoms on epigenetic regulation of placenta glucocorticoid signaling genes (NR3C1 and FKBP5). Lifetime trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms during pregnancy were assessed in a racially/ethnically diverse sample of pregnant women (N = 198). Participants were categorized into three groups: (1) No ...

'Would I risk it again?' The long-term impacts of a traumatic birth, as experienced by fathers
CONCLUSIONS: Traumatic birth can result in fathers experiencing difficulties beyond the perinatal period, whilst thinking that they should not feel or discuss their distress. As a result of a traumatic birth fathers can experience ongoing guilt and poor mental health, which may lead them to delay subsequent pregnancies. Most participants had not accessed support regarding the traumatic birth, instead coping by trying to avoid their memories and emotional reaction. These findings highlight the need for increased acknowledgement of the impact of birth trauma and intervention for fathers, during and after the perinatal period...
