Swallowing-like activity elicited in neonatal rat medullary slice preparation
Brain Res. 2024 Apr 26:148955. doi: 10.1016/j.brainres.2024.148955. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSwallowing is induced by a central pattern generator in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). We aimed to create a medullary slice preparation to elucidate the neural architecture of the central pattern generator of swallowing (Sw-CPG) and record its neural activities. Experiments were conducted on 2-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 46). The brainstem-spinal cord was transected at the pontomedullary and cervicothoracic junctions; the medulla was sliced transversely at thicknesses of 600, 700, or 800 μm. The rostral end of the...

Timing of administration of antenatal magnesium sulphate and correlation with umbilical cord blood magnesium levels in preterm babies
CONCLUSION: Mean cord blood magnesium levels served as a tool to determine the timing and duration of Neuroprophylaxis. Mean cord blood magnesium of 3.8 mg/dl should be achieved to serve the purpose of Neuroprotection. To achieve this, Bolus followed by Infusion should be administered for at-least 6 h prior to delivery.PMID:38678795 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2024.04.031 (Source: Reproductive Biology)

Azithromycin therapy for prevention of chronic lung disease of prematurity (AZTEC): a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial
Lancet Respir Med. 2024 Apr 25:S2213-2600(24)00079-1. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(24)00079-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Systematic reviews have reported conflicting evidence on whether macrolide antibiotics reduce rates of chronic lung disease of prematurity (CLD) in at-risk preterm infants born at less than 30 weeks' gestation, including in those colonised with pulmonary Ureaplasma spp. Since an adequately powered trial has been lacking, we aimed to assess if the macrolide azithromycin improved survival without the development of physiologically defined moderate or severe CLD in preterm infants.METHODS: AZTEC ...

Neuroinflammation in the Rat Brain After Exposure to Diagnostic Ultrasound
To date there have been no studies exploring the potential for neuroinflammation as an intracranial bio-effect associated with diagnostic ultrasound during neonatal cranial scans in a mammalian in vivo model. The study described here was aimed at investigating the effects of B-mode and Doppler mode ultrasound on inflammation in the rat brain. (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)

Maternal positional therapy for fetal growth and customised birth weight centile benefit in a Bayesian reanalysis of a double-blind, sham-controlled, randomised clinical trial
Conclusions Maternal nightly PT throughout the third-trimester did not have a statistically significant effect on CBWC on a frequentist analysis using the latest fetal growth standard. However, from a Bayesian analysis, clinicians can infer that PT is likely to benefit fetal growth but with a modest effect size. Trial registration number NCT02379728. (Source: BMJ Open)

Inequalities in birth before arrival at hospital in South West England: a multimethods study of neonatal hypothermia and emergency medical services call-handler advice
Conclusions Findings identified factors associated with BBA and neonatal hypothermia following BBA. Improvements to EMS call-handler advice could reduce the number of babies arriving at hospital hypothermic. (Source: BMJ Open)

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) ameliorates disease in a murine model of anti-laminin 332 mucous membrane pemphigoid
Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is used to treat mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP), although its therapeutic effectivity is not sufficiently supported by randomized controlled clinical trials and its mode of action is only insufficiently understood. We have examined the effect of IVIg in a mouse model of anti-laminin 332 MMP and found that IVIg ameliorates both cutaneous and mucosal inflammatory lesions. Our investigation into the modes of action of IVIg in MMP indicated effective antiinflammatory mechanisms beyond the enhanced degradation of IgG mediated through inhibition of the neonatal Fc receptor. Examining the associations between microglia genetic capacity, early life exposures and white matter development at the level of the individual
Brain Behav Immun. 2024 Apr 25:S0889-1591(24)00387-8. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2024.04.038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere are inter-individual differences in susceptibility to the influence of early life experiences for which the underlying neurobiological mechanisms are poorly understood. Microglia play a role in environmental surveillance and may influence individual susceptibility to environmental factors. As an index of neurodevelopment, we estimated individual slopes of mean white matter fractional anisotropy (WM-FA) across three time-points (age 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5 years) for 351 participants. Individual variation in m...

Enteral plasma supports brain repair in newborn pigs after birth asphyxia
We present a new clinically relevant animal model of moderate birth asphyxia inducing structural and functional brain damage. The components in plasma that support brain repair remain to be identified but may represent a therapeutic potential for infants and animals after birth asphyxia.PMID:38677626 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2024.04.032 (Source: Brain, Behavior, and Immunity)

Differential impact of prenatal PTSD symptoms and preconception trauma exposure on placental < em > NR3C1 < /em > and < em > FKBP5 < /em > methylation
Stress. 2024 Jan;27(1):2321595. doi: 10.1080/10253890.2024.2321595. Epub 2024 Apr 26.ABSTRACTPerinatal stress is associated with altered placental methylation, which plays a critical role in fetal development and infant outcomes. This proof-of-concept pilot study investigated the impact of lifetime trauma exposure and perinatal PTSD symptoms on epigenetic regulation of placenta glucocorticoid signaling genes (NR3C1 and FKBP5). Lifetime trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms during pregnancy were assessed in a racially/ethnically diverse sample of pregnant women (N = 198). Participants were categorized into three groups: (1) No ...

Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy during COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the total incidence of ICP appeared to be lower. However, this reduction was primarily observed in cases of mild ICP, potentially indicating challenges in detection or reduced access to medical services during this period. The incidence of moderate and severe ICP remained unchanged, suggesting that these forms of the condition were unaffected by the pandemic's circumstances.PMID:38674322 | PMC:PMC11052128 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040676 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Association between Antenatal Vaginal Bleeding and Adverse Perinatal Outcomes in Placenta Accreta Spectrum
Conclusions: Antenatal vaginal bleeding in the setting of PAS is associated with increased emergent deliveries, earlier gestational ages, and maternal composite morbidity. This important antenatal event may aid in not only counseling patients but also in the coordination of multidisciplinary teams caring for these complex patients.PMID:38674323 | PMC:PMC11052054 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040677 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))
