The role of early life origin B cells in adult immunity
The adult immune system is a mosaic of short-lived cells that are continuously replenished by ongoing hematopoiesis and self-sustaining cells that originated from times long gone. Using lineage tracing mediated by CD79aCreERT2 induced at various time points during ontogeny we have identified a neonatal wave of B cell output that is remarkably well preserved into adulthood. In addition to B-1 cells, early-life time-stamped B cells contributed substantially to IgA plasma cells. These were actively maintained by B cell memory within gut chronic germinal centers and contained commensal microbiota reactivity. Interestingly, neo...

Genetics at the maternal-placental-fetal interface: insights into fetal growth and cardiometabolic health.
The early life period is critical for long term health. Fetal growth abnormalities and cardiometabolic diseases are interconnected and cause high burden of morbidity. Understanding the complex genetic and environmental factors that underlie these relationships is crucial to developing preventive and therapeutic interventions for maximizing health across the life span. The placenta is critical for fetal development and potentially underlies later onset diseases, but it is understudied. Moreover, to date, perinatal genomic studies have failed to capture human ancestral diversity, which impedes biological understanding of dis...

State of the Science of Pediatric Palliative Care Conference
It is estimated that in the United States 74,000 children are living with serious illness. Palliative care is an interdisciplinary approach of specialized medical care for those living with serious illness. This care focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of serious illness for the patient, their family, and their community. This conference will provide a deep understanding of the state of the science of pediatric palliative care. Speakers will share a summary of current research and a careful analysis of the gaps and opportunities for research in maternal, perinatal, infant, child and adolescent patients...

NIH/FDA IIG Seminar - Viral reservoirs and rebound in a model of perinatal HIV infection
Dr. Chahroudi ’ s research group aims to discover mechanisms of HIV persistence, test translational cure-directed strategies, and uncover immunopathologies caused by Zika virus and SARS-CoV-2 infections using pediatric models and patient samples. Her group ’ s HIV research is centered on mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Using nonhuman primate models of pathogenic and nonpathogenic SIV infections, her group aims to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for breastfeeding transmission. Dr. Chaahroudi has found that sooty mangabeys, a natural SIV host species, rarely transmit SIV from mother to infant. A better understa...

NINDS/NICHD Workshop on Cerebral Palsy
This is a practice session for the Workshop on Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy, the most common cause of childhood disability, arises as a consequence of abnormal neurodevelopment or prenatal/perinatal injury to the parts of the brain involved in controlling movement. In the past, delayed diagnosis of cerebral palsy precluded timely delivery of therapeutic interventions early in life, the period in which treatment may be most effective for neurodevelopmental disorders. However, even with advances that have enabled earlier diagnosis of cerebral palsy, treatment options remain limited. To help address these challenges facing...
