Clinical characteristics and outcomes of acute liver failure in neonates: a retrospective cohort in China
Conclusion: Hypoxic/ischemic injury and infection are the predominant etiologies of NALF in China. The overall prognosis of NALF is poor, but its short-term prognosis is determined by the etiology. What is Known: • Neonatal acute liver failure (NALF) is a rare disorder with limited cohort studies, especially in China. • Gestational alloimmune liver disease, viral infections (especially herpes simplex virus), metabolic diseases and ischemic insults are common etiologies of NALF, which are significantly different from other populations. • There are no reliable biochemical markers to predict the outcome of NALF. What is...

Factors Influencing Iatrogenic Skin Injury in Neonates and Nursing Strategies
CONCLUSION: Length of stay, orotracheal intubation use, and gastric tube use are independent risk factors for iatrogenic skin injury in neonates. Hospital stays and unnecessary use of orotracheal intubation and gastric tube should be reduced in future clinical management. Attention should be paid to strengthening skin observation and care, keeping skin dry and clean, and preventing iatrogenic skin injury.PMID:38687850 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Rectifying METTL4-Mediated N < sup > 6 < /sup > -Methyladenine Excess in Mitochondrial DNA Alleviates Heart Failure
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings identify a pivotal role of cardiomyocyte mtDNA 6mA and the corresponding methyltransferase, METTL4, in the pathogenesis of mitochondrial dysfunction and HF. Targeted suppression of METTL4 to rectify mtDNA 6mA excess emerges as a promising strategy for developing mitochondria-focused HF interventions.PMID:38686562 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.123.068358 (Source: Circulation)

SERCA2 protects against cisplatin-induced damage of auditory cells: Possible relation with alleviation of ER stress
Toxicol Appl Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 28:116947. doi: 10.1016/j.taap.2024.116947. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAIMS: SERCA2, one of the P-type pumps encoded by gene ATP2A2, is the only calcium reflux channel of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and participates in maintaining calcium homeostasis. The present study was designed to explore SERCA2 expression pattern in auditory hair cells and the possible mechanism underlying the effects of SERCA2 on cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.MAIN METHODS: The SERCA2 expression pattern in cochlea hair cells and HEI-OC1 cells was measured by Western blot (WB) and immunofluorescence staining. The ...

Risk factors and outcome of antenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia following in-utero transfer in a busy public-sector tertiary care center in North India
Monaldi Arch Chest Dis. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.4081/monaldi.2024.2880. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe analyzed the risk factors and outcomes of antenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) from a tertiary-care children's hospital following in-utero transfer. A total of 41 antenatally detected cases of CDH were included; 30 were live-born and 11 were still-born. The primary outcome was postnatal survival. The secondary outcome was the probable factor affecting survival. No medical termination of the pregnancy was done. The mean gestational age at diagnosis was 23 weeks. The diagnostic accuracy of antenatal ul...

GSE263174 CRISPR Screening Uncovers a Long-Range Enhancer for ONECUT1 in Pancreatic Differentiation and Links a Diabetes Risk Variant
Contributors : Danwei Huangfu ; Wilfred W Wong ; Samuel J KaplanSeries Type : OtherOrganism : Homo sapiensFunctional enhancer annotation is a valuable first step for understanding tissue-specific transcriptional regulation and prioritizing disease-associated non-coding variants for investigation. However, unbiased enhancer discovery in physiologically relevant contexts remains a major challenge. To discover regulatory elements pertinent to diabetes, we conducted a CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) screen in the human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) pancreatic differentiation system. Among the enhancers uncovered, we focused on a...

The effect of bariatric surgery on polycystic ovary syndrome patients ’ obstetric and neonatal outcomes: a population-based study
ConclusionsBS in PCOS patients was associated with reduced risks for GDM and PIH when compared to PCOS controls without BS and reduced risk for gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and preeclampsia or eclampsia superimposed on hypertension when compared to obese PCOS controls without BS. Moreover, BS was associated with reduced inherent pregnancy risks of PCOS, almost equating them to those of non-PCOS counterparts. (Source: Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics)
