Pediatric hypertension as an early manifestation of cardiovascular disease in children
J Bras Nefrol. 2024 May 3;46(4):e20230159. doi: 10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2023-0159en. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn adults, cardiovascular events associated with arterial hypertension (AH) have a major impact on morbidity and mortality. In light of recent findings, AH in children has been interpreted as early cardiovascular disease (CVD), while exposure to CV risk factors in children proves to be a predictor of subclinical CVD in adults. The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association has recently updated the classifications for measuring blood pressure (BP) in adults and children. Primary AH in children is genera...

Timing of Red Blood Cell Transfusions and Occurrence of Necrotizing Enterocolitis: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The findings of this post hoc analysis suggest that, among ELBW infants with the hemoglobin ranges occurring in the TOP trial, exposure to RBC transfusions was not temporally associated with a higher risk of NEC during 72-hour posttransfusion hazard periods. Given that the incidence rate of NEC peaked between postnatal days 20 and 29 among infants with lower hemoglobin values, a more in-depth examination of this at-risk period using larger data sets is warranted.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01702805.PMID:38700862 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.9643 (Source: Cancer Control)

Lamivudine plus dolutegravir as a switch strategy in children: three case reports
We present three case reports of three children enrolled in the Italian Register for HIV Infection in Children: a 9-year-old boy, a 10-year-old girl, and a 2-year-old girl with perinatally acquired HIV who immediately started antiretroviral therapy with a three-drug regimen upon diagnosis, which occurred at delivery, after 6 months of life, and after 2 years of life, respectively. They achieved and maintain virological suppression after 1, 6, and 7 months of therapy, respectively; then a switch strategy was performed with a two-drug regimen with DTG/3TC STR at the age of 7 years for the first child and at the age of 9 year...

Concentrations of selected immunological parameters in the serum and processing fluid of suckling piglets and the serum and colostrum of their mothers
Blood sampling from neonatal piglets is related to multiple disadvantages. Therefore, a new, alternative matrix is required to assess piglets ’ early immune status efficiently. The present study aimed to assess... (Source: BMC Veterinary Research)

Percutaneous Drainage for Giant Pulmonary Interstitial Emphysema in a Tiny Infant with a Birth Weight of 327  g
AJP Rep 2024; 14: e133-e135 DOI: 10.1055/s-0044-1786713Giant pulmonary cyst in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants has been described as one of severe pulmonary diseases. Any definitive therapy for refractory cases, where conservative methods of treatments are not effective, has not been established as a standard. Herein, we report an ELBW infant with a giant pulmonary cyst cured by percutaneous drainage without any adverse events. A female infant was born with a birth weight of 327 g. Surfactant was administered on days 1 and 2 of life to treat respiratory distress syndrome. Tracheal intubation was performed and s...

Low-Titer Type O Whole Blood for Transfusing Perinatal Patients after Acute Hemorrhage: A Case Series
Conclusion Transfusing LTOWB to perinatal patients after acute blood loss is feasible and appears at least as safe a serial component transfusion. Its use has subsequently been expanded to multiple hospitals in our region as first-line transfusion treatment for acute perinatal hemorrhage. Key Points Low-titer type O whole blood (LTOWB) was our initial transfusion product for 30 perinatal patients with acute hemorrhage. Twenty-five of these were obstetrical patients and five were neonatal patients. We encountered no problems with, or adverse effects from LTOWB in any of these patients. LTOWB transfusions to wom...

Why does the number of antenatal care visits in Ethiopia remain low?: A Bayesian multilevel approach
ConclusionOverall, 26.5% of pregnant women do not have ANC visits during their pregnancy, and 3% of women have eight-time ANC visits. This result is much lower as compared to WHO ’s recommendation, which states that all pregnant women should have at least eight ANC visits. In this study, the ages of the women 25–28, 29–33, and ≥34 years, being a primary school, secondary school, and above, delivered in a health facility, delivered with caesarian section, multiple pre gnancies, rich, middle and poor wealth index, were significantly associated with the higher number of ANC visits, while households with large family s...

M. van der Meij Carla G. van El Tessel Rigter Lidewij Henneman In many countries, some form of genetic screening is offered to all or part of the population, either in the form of well-organized screening programs or in a less formalized way. Screening can be offered at different phases of life, such as preconception, prenatal, neonatal and later in life. Screening should only be offered if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Technical innovations in testing and...

Early-life exposures and long-term health: adverse gestational environments and the programming of offspring renal and vascular disease
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00383.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccording to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis, exposure to certain environmental influences during early life may be a key determinant of fetal development and short- and long-term offspring health. Indeed, adverse conditions encountered during the fetal, perinatal, and early childhood stages can alter normal development and growth, as well as put the offspring at elevated risk of developing long-term health conditions in adulthood, including chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascul...
