Bio-thermal response during laser haemorrhoidoplasty: an exclusive analytical and numerical approach for theoretical investigation
AbstractHaemorrhoidal disease is identified by declension of the inflamed and bleeding of vascular tissues of the anal canal. Traditionally, haemorrhoids are associated with chronic  constipation and the most common symptoms are irritation in anus region, pain and discomfort, swelling around anus, tender lumps around the anus and rectal bleeding (depending upon the grade of haemorrhoid). Among the several conventional treatment procedures (commonly mentioned as, rubber band li tigation, sclerotherapy and electrotherapy), laser haemorrhoidoplasty is an out-patient and less-invasive laparoscopic procedure. From literature s...

Increased uterine arterial tone, stiffness and remodeling with augmented matrix metalloproteinase-1 and -7 in uteroplacental ischemia-induced hypertensive pregnancy
Biochem Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 19:116227. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2024.116227. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPreeclampsia is a pregnancy-related disorder manifested as hypertensive pregnancy (HTN-Preg) and often fetal growth restriction (FGR), but the mechanisms involved are unclear. We have reported enhanced reactivity of systemic vessels in HTN-Preg rats, but the critical changes in the uterine circulation are less clear. We tested whether HTN-Preg involves localized aberrations in uterine arterial tone, stiffness and remodeling by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Blood pressure (BP) and litter size were recorded in normal preg...

Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 20;174:116625. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116625. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAIMS: The purpose of this study was to explore the impacts of salidroside on vascular regeneration, vascular structural changes and long-term neurological recuperation following cerebral ischemia and its possible mechanism.MAIN METHODS: From Day 1 to Day 28, young male mice with middle cerebral artery blockage received daily doses of salidroside and measured neurological deficits. On the 7th day after stroke, the volume of cerebral infarction was determined using TTC and HE staining. Microvascular density, astrocyt...

Piezo1 stretch-activated channel activity differs between murine bone marrow-derived and cardiac tissue-resident macrophages
This study explores the activity of mechanosensitive ion channels (MSC) in murine MΦBM and compares it to MSC activity in MΦ enzymatically isolated from cardiac tissue (tissue-resident MΦ; MΦTR). We show that MΦBM and MΦTR have stretch-induced currents, indicating the presence of functional MSC in their plasma membrane. The current profiles in MΦBM and in MΦTR show characteristics of cation non-selective MSC such as Piezo1 or transient receptor potential channels. While Piezo1 ion channel activity is detectable in the plasma membrane of MΦBM using the patch-clamp technique, or by measuring cytosolic calcium concen...

Analysis of the role of perfusion, mechanical, and electrical stimulation in bioreactors for cardiac tissue engineering
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2024 Apr 20. doi: 10.1007/s00449-024-03004-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSince cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are globally one of the leading causes of death, of which myocardial infarction (MI) can cause irreversible damage and decrease survivors' quality of life, novel therapeutics are needed. Current approaches such as organ transplantation do not fully restore cardiac function or are limited. As a valuable strategy, tissue engineering seeks to obtain constructs that resemble myocardial tissue, vessels, and heart valves using cells, biomaterials as scaffolds, biochemical and physical stimuli. ...

Epicardial Adipose Tissue Thickness and Preserved Ejection Fraction Heart Failure
AbstractPurpose of the ReviewPreserved ejection fraction heart failure and obesity frequently coexist. Whether obesity plays a consistent role in the pathogenesis of preserved ejection fraction heart failure is unclear. Accumulation of visceral adiposity underlies the pathogenic aftermaths of obesity. However, visceral adiposity imaging is assessed by computed tomography or magnetic resonance and thus not routinely available. In contrast, epicardial adiposity thickness is assessed by echocardiography and thus routinely available. We review the rationale for assessing epicardial adiposity thickness in patients with preserve...

Development of Cell Culture Platforms for Study of Trabecular Meshwork Cells and Glaucoma Development
AbstractBackground:Various cell culture platforms that could display native environmental cue-mimicking stimuli were developed, and effects of environmental cues on cell behaviors were studied with the cell culture platforms. Likewise, various cell culture platforms mimicking native trabecular meshwork (TM) composed of juxtacanalicular, corneoscleral and uveal meshwork located in internal scleral sulcus were used to study effects of environmental cues and/or drug treatments on TM cells and glaucoma development. Glaucoma is a disease that could cause blindness, and cause of glaucoma is not clearly identified yet. It appears...

Prospects of perfusion contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CE-US) in diagnosing axillary lymph node metastases in breast cancer: a comparison with lymphatic CE-US
AbstractAccurate diagnosis of lymph node (LN) metastasis is vital for prognosis and treatment in patients with breast cancer. Imaging 1modalities such as ultrasound (US), MRI, CT, and 18F-FDG PET/CT are used for preoperative assessment. While conventional US is commonly recommended due to its resolution and sensitivity, it has limitations such as operator subjectivity and difficulty detecting small metastases. This review shows the microanatomy of axillary LNs to enhance accurate diagnosis and the characteristics of contrast-enhanced US (CE-US), which utilizes intravascular microbubble contrast agents, making it ideal for ...

Anterior and posterior ischemic optic neuropathy in a child with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis on hemodialysis
ConclusionsThe exact cause of our patient ’s simultaneous bilateral anterior and posterior ION, confirmed via MRI and fundoscopic examination, is unclear; however, is likely secondary to a combination of fluctuating blood pressure, anemia, anephric status, and hemodialysis. This highlights the need for close blood pressure monitoring, man agement of anemia, and more diligent ophthalmologic screening in pediatric patients on chronic hemodialysis. Quantitative MR imaging biomarkers for distinguishing inflammatory pancreatic mass and pancreatic cancer —a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsQuantitative MR imaging biomarkers are useful in distinguishing between IPM and PC. ADC values differ between MFP and AIP, and they should be separated for consideration in future studies.Clinical relevance statementQuantitative MR parameters could serve as non-invasive imaging biomarkers for differentiating malignant pancreatic neoplasms from inflammatory masses of the pancreas, and hence help to avoid unnecessary surgery.Key Points•Several quantitative MR imaging biomarkers performed well in differential diagnosis between inflammatory pancreatic mass and pancreatic cancer.•The ADC value could discern pancr...

Thrombopoietin exerts a neuroprotective effect by inhibiting the suppression of neuronal proliferation and axonal outgrowth in intrauterine growth restriction rats
In conclusion, suppression of neuronal proliferation and axonal outgrowth in IUGR rats resulted in cortical thinning and enlargement of lateral ventricles. TPO administration might be a novel therapeutic strategy for treating brain dysmaturation in IUGR infants.PMID:38636773 | DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2024.114781 (Source: Experimental Neurology)
