Multiparametric ultrasound as a new concept of assessment of liver tissue damage
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 28;30(12):1663-1669. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i12.1663.ABSTRACTLiver disease accounts for approximately 2 million deaths per year worldwide. All chronic liver diseases (CLDs), whether of toxic, genetic, autoimmune, or infectious origin, undergo typical histological changes in the structure of the tissue. These changes may include the accumulation of extracellular matrix material, fats, triglycerides, or tissue scarring. Noninvasive methods for diagnosing CLD, such as conventional B-mode ultrasound (US), play a significant role in diagnosis. Doppler US, when coupled with B-mode US, can be helpful...

Routine utilization of machine perfusion in liver transplantation: Ready for prime time?
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 21;30(11):1488-1493. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1488.ABSTRACTThe last decade has been notable for increasing high-quality research and dramatic improvement in outcomes with dynamic liver preservation. Robust evidence from numerous randomized controlled trials has been pooled by meta-analyses, providing the highest available evidence on the protective effect of machine perfusion (MP) over static cold storage in liver transplantation (LT). Based on a protective effect with less complications and improved graft survival, the field has seen a paradigm shift in organ preservation. This editorial fo...

Young man with chest pain and an abnormal echocardiogram
Clinical introduction A man in his 40s with a history of hyperlipidaemia presented with intermittent, dull left-sided chest pain for 2 weeks that was not consistently exertional. He denied dyspnoea, cough, fevers, recent travel or exposure to sick people. He did not smoke or use alcohol or illicit drugs. There was no pertinent family history. Physical examination, an ECG, basic laboratories and a chest X-ray were unremarkable. The patient was referred for an exercise nuclear study and did 11 min on the Bruce protocol without angina or ischaemic ECG changes. Myocardial scintigraphic perfusion images at stress and rest were ...

Comparison of macular and optic disc vessel density in thyroid orbitopathy: a comparative octa study
ConclusionActive TO group had lower vessel density than inactive group and after treatment, vessel density was increased. Non-invasive quantitative analysis of retinal and optic disc perfusion using OCTA could be useful in early treatment before complications occur and monitoring patients with TO. Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM)-derived perfusion fraction mapping for the visual evaluation of MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) ablation of uterine fibroids
CONCLUSION: The MR-HIFU treatment effect in uterine fibroids can be visualized using IVIM perfusion fraction mapping, in moderate concordance with contrast enhanced MRI. IVIM perfusion fraction mapping has therefore the potential to serve as a contrast agent-free imaging method to visualize the MR-HIFU treatment progression in uterine fibroids.PMID:38616245 | DOI:10.1080/02656736.2024.2321980 (Source: International Journal of Hyperthermia)

CT Brain Perfusion Patterns and Clinical Outcome after Successful Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: A Pilot Study
Cardiac arrest is a significant global health issue with an incidence rate of 38 –55 per 100,000 person-years [1]. Re-establishing the spontaneous circulation with restoration of the cerebral blood flow (CBF) to the ischaemic brain tissues can induce secondary brain injury and tissue inflammatory response, a condition known as post-cardiac-arrest brain injury (PCABI). PCABI ca uses changes in the cerebral perfusion [2], contributing significantly to mortality and morbidity following cardiac arrest. (Source: Resuscitation)

Accumulation of Microvascular Target Organ Damage in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients Is Associated with Increased Cardiovascular Risk
Conclusions: Our study showed for the first time that SLE patients exhibit a greater number of cases of TOD. The accumulation of TOD was associated with increased CV risk. Clinicians dealing with SLE should be aware and seek microvascular alterations.PMID:38610905 | DOI:10.3390/jcm13072140 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Prognostic value of brain perfusion by MRI in the initial study of high grade gliomas
CONCLUSIONS: It has become evident that the tumour perfusion via MRI scan has a prognostic value in the initial analysis of HGG. The average survival period of patients with rCBV less than or equal to 3.0 is significantly higher than those patients whose values are higher, which allows to be more precise with the prognosis of each patient.PMID:38614528 | DOI:10.1016/j.rxeng.2022.12.010 (Source: Radiologia)

Deferoxamine topical cream superior to patch in rescuing radiation-induced fibrosis of unwounded and wounded skin
J Cell Mol Med. 2024 Apr;28(8):e18306. doi: 10.1111/jcmm.18306.ABSTRACTTopical patch delivery of deferoxamine (DFO) has been studied as a treatment for this fibrotic transformation in irradiated tissue. Efficacy of a novel cream formulation of DFO was studied as a RIF therapeutic in unwounded and excisionally wounded irradiated skin. C57BL/6J mice underwent 30 Gy of radiation to the dorsum followed by 4 weeks of recovery. In a first experiment, mice were separated into six conditions: DFO 50 mg cream (D50), DFO 100 mg cream (D100), soluble DFO injections (DI), DFO 1 mg patch (DP), control cream (Vehicle), and irradiated un...
