Winogradskyella immobilis sp. nov., an Alginate-Hydrolyzing Bacterium Isolated from the Brown Algae Saccharina japonica
Curr Microbiol. 2023 Oct 14;80(12):370. doi: 10.1007/s00284-023-03474-y.ABSTRACTA novel bacterium, designated E313T, was isolated from brown algae Saccharina japonica in Weihai, China. The strain is a Gram-stain-negative, non-flagellated, non-gliding, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that grows optimally at 28 °C with pH levels between 7.0 and 7.5 and in the presence of 2-3% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence placed the strain within the monophyletic cluster of the genus Winogradskyella, exhibiting the highest similarity to Winogradskyella wandonensis KCTC 32579T (96.8%). Genome comparison ...

Diatom-derived mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with fucoidan for enhanced chemo-photodynamic therapy
In this study, the focus was on the design of a combination therapy of chemotherapy and PDT. They synthesized diatomaceous earth mesoporous silica nanoparticles (dMSN) containing lanthanide metal ions in a PDT composition. These nanoparticles can generate ROS under near-infrared light irradiation and have MRI and fluorescence imaging capabilities, confirming their phototherapeutic effect on HCT116 cancer cells at a 200 μg/mL concentration. Fucoidan, derived from brown algae, was used as the chemotherapy component. The fucoidan extracted from Sargassum oligocystum in Pingtung Haikou showed the highest anticancer activity, ...

Macroalgae culture-induced carbon sink in a large cultivation area of China
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 23. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29985-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMacroalgae culture-induced carbon sink in sediments has been little investigated. Here, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and δ13C were examined in sediments in a cultivation field of macroalgae (kelp and Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis) in Sansha Bay, Southeast China. Both proxies of C/N (TOC to TN ratio) and δ13C indicated a multisource of TOC. Based on a three-endmember model, macroalgae-derived TOC (TOCma) accounted for < 35% of the total TOC, averaging 16 ± 9% (mean ± SD). On average, terrestrial ...

Formulation of a thermo-sensitive hydro-gel for ulcerative colitis treatment
Bioinformation. 2022 Oct 31;18(10):925-937. doi: 10.6026/97320630018925. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTUlcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes chronic intestinal inflammation in gastrointestinal (GI) tract, mainly in innermost lining of colonic mucosa. In any of the UC drug therapy regimens, maintaining remission is challenging and about 20-40% of patients don't respond to conventional UC medications, namely, amino salicylates, steroids and immunosuppressive drugs. These agents can weaken the patient's immune system thus enhancing the risk of infectious diseases. Therefore, in our explo...
