The skin's primary function is to act as a protective barrier between the organism and its external environment. Physically, it protects from external threats such as chemicals, allergens, and irritants. Internally, the skin helps to maintain homeostasis and protects from enhanced loss of water. The lipid matrix in the stratum corneum of the skin is crucial for skin barrier function. The proper formation and function of the lipid matrix can be adversely affected by a deficiency in lipids.
