Iron uptake, transport and storage in marine brown algae
Biometals. 2023 Mar 17. doi: 10.1007/s10534-023-00489-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIron is a vital although biologically inaccessible trace nutrient for nearly all forms of life but "free" iron can be deleterious to cells and thus iron uptake and storage must be carefully controlled. The marine environment is particularly iron poor making mechanisms for its uptake and storage even more imperative. In this brief review we explore the known and potential iron uptake and storage pathways for the biologically and economically important marine brown macroalgae (seaweeds/kelps).PMID:36930341 | DOI:10.1007/s10534-023-00489-7 (Source: Biometals)

Gongolarones as antiamoeboid chemical scaffold
In this study, six meroterpenoids were isolated and purified from the species Gongolaria abies-marina. Gongolarones A (1), B (2) and C (3) were identified as new compounds. Additionally, cystomexicone B (4), 1'-methoxyamentadione (5) and 6Z-1'-methoxyamentadione (6) were isolated. All compounds exhibited amoebicidal activity against Acanthamoeba castellanii Neff, A. polyphaga and A. griffini strains. Gongolarones A (1) and C (3) showed the lowest IC50 values against the two stages of these amoebae (trophozoite and cyst). Structure-activity relationship revealed that the cyclization by ether formation from C-12 to C-15 of 1...

Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2023 Mar;73(3). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.005706.ABSTRACTThe genus Tamlana from the Bacteroidota currently includes six validated species. Two strains designated PT2-4T and 62-3T were isolated from Sargassum abundant at the Pingtan island coast in the Fujian Province of China. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the closest described relative of strains PT2-4T and 62-3T is Tamlana sedimentorum JCM 19808T with 98.40 and 97.98% sequence similarity, respectively. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain PT2-4T and strain 62-3T was 98.68 %. Furthermore, the highest average nucleotide i...

Structural Characteristics and Anticancer Activity of Water-Soluble Polysaccharides from Vietnamese Brown Algae Sargassum microcystum and S. serratum
The composition of water-soluble polysaccharides (fucoidans and laminarans) from the two Vietnamese brown algaeSargassum microcystum andS. serratum was investigated. It was found thatS. microcystum produced fucoidan and laminaran with predominance of the latter;S. serratum, only fucoidan. The fucoidans were sulfated galactofucans and a sulfated and acetylated heteropolysaccharide of complicated structure. The laminaran had a main chain of 1,3-boundβ-D-glucose residues with single branches on C6 (ratio of 1,3:1,6 bonds = 4:1). The sulfates occupied the 2-, 4-, and 6-positions in the obtained sulfated laminaran derivative. ...

A novel alginate lyase and its domain functions for the preparation of unsaturated monosaccharides
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Feb 16. doi: 10.1007/s00253-023-12424-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBrown algae are considered promising crops for the production of sustainable biofuels. However, the commercial application has been limited by lack of efficient methods for converting alginate into fermentable sugars. Herein, we cloned and characterized a novel alginate lyase AlyPL17 from Pedobacter hainanensis NJ-02. It possessed outstanding catalytic efficiency toward polymannuronic acid (polyM), polyguluronic acid (polyG), and alginate sodium, with kcat of 39.42 ± 1.9 s-1, 32.53 ± 0.88 s-1, and 38.30 ± 2.12 s-1, res...

Colorimetric and visual determination of iodide ions via morphology transition of gold nanobipyramids
Anal Biochem. 2023 Feb 6:115077. doi: 10.1016/j.ab.2023.115077. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe gold nanobipyramids (Au NBPs) are widely used in the analytical detection of biochemistry due to their unique localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. In our developed approach, I- in kelp was detected by etching Au NBPs in the presence of IO3-. Under acidic conditions, IO3- reacted rapidly with I- to form I2, subsequently I2 reacted with I- to form the intermediate I3-. In the presence of CTAB, Au NBPs were etched by I2 derived from I3-, resulting in a decrease in the aspect ratio of Au NBPs, to form a significa...

Effect of Radionuclides and Trace Elements on Antioxidant System of Brown Seaweeds
This study aims to evaluate the radionuclides and trace element stress with response molecules. Cystoseira crinita and Halopteris scoparia have been chosen as study materials because of their susceptibility to pollution. The radionuclides 210Po, 238U, 232Th and 40K and trace elements Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, As, Zn and Pb levels were analysed as well as antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes in two brown algae, seasonally. Marine pollutants in terms of radionuclides and trace elements were correlated with antioxidant molecules in these species and may be used as biomarkers for assessing the radioactive stress. The 210Po and Mn concen...

Hierarchical porous biochar from kelp: Insight into self-template effect and highly efficient removal of methylene blue from water
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Jan 24:128676. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.128676. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBiochar is known to efficiently remove dyes especially for biochar with hierarchical pores and partial N-species. Here, a facile pyrolysis is used to yield N-doped biochar from kelp without additives, showing surface areas of 771 m2/g as temperature up to 1000 °C and hierarchical small-sized mesopores (2-4 nm) and wide meso-macropores (8-60 nm). A possible self-template mechanism from inorganics is proposed to form hierarchical pore architecture in biochar and used for methylene blue (MB) removal. Biochar pyrolyzed at...
