Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5853: Pentafuhalol-B, a Phlorotannin from Brown Algae, Strongly Inhibits the PLK-1 Overexpression in Cancer Cells as Revealed by Computational Analysis
mad Faheem Khan Polo-like kinase-1 (PLK-1) is an essential mitotic serine/threonine (Ser/Thr) kinase that belongs to the Polo-like kinase (PLK) family and is overexpressed in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) via promotion of cell division. Therefore, PLK-1 may act as a promising target for the therapeutic cure of various cancers. Although a variety of anti-cancer drugs, both synthetic and naturally occurring, such as volasertib, onvansertib, thymoquinone, and quercetin, are available either alone or in combination with other therapies, they have limited efficacy, especially in the advanced stages of cancer. To the be...

Physicochemical characterization and cosmetic application of kelp blanching water polysaccharides
This study aims to explore the feasibility of isolating water-soluble biopolymers from seaweed hydrothermal waste and their potential applications. Using Saccharina japonica blanching water as example, 2.9 g/L of polymeric substances were efficiently isolated by ultrafiltration, implying biopolymer coproduction potential of ~5.8 kt from blanching wastewater of current kelp industry. Physicochemical characterizations revealed polysaccharidic nature of the biopolymers, with high contents of fucose, uronic acids and sulfate, showing distinct but also overlapping structural features with hot water-extracted kelp polysaccharide...

Multiscale Spatial Variability and Stability in the Structure and Diversity of Bacterial Communities Associated with the Kelp Eisenia cokeri in Peru
Microb Ecol. 2023 Jul 7. doi: 10.1007/s00248-023-02262-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEcological communities are structured by a range of processes that operate over a range of spatial scales. While our understanding of such biodiversity patterns in macro-communities is well studied, our understanding at the microbial level is still lacking. Bacteria can be free living or associated with host eukaryotes, forming part of a wider "microbiome," which is fundamental for host performance and health. For habitat forming foundation-species, host-bacteria relationships likely play disproportionate roles in mediating processes fo...

Quantitative analysis of The High Yield Hydrolysis of Kelp by Laminarinase and Alginate Lyase
In this study, we determined that combination of a single glycoside hydrolase family 55 β-1,3-exoglucanase with a broad specificity alginate lyase from polysaccharide lyase family 18 gives efficient hydrolysis of untreated kelp to a mixture of simple sugars glucose, gentiobiose, mannitol-end glucose, and mannuronic and guluronic acids and their soluble oligomers. Quantitative assignments from nanostructure initiator mass spectrometry (NIMS) and 2D HSQC NMR and analysis of the reaction time-course are provided. The data suggests that binary combinations of enzymes targeted to the unique polysaccharide composition of marine...

Effect of kelp gull harassment on southern right whale calf survival: a long-term capture-recapture analysis
Biol Lett. 2023 Jun;19(6):20230119. doi: 10.1098/rsbl.2023.0119. Epub 2023 Jun 7.ABSTRACTKelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) commonly feed on the skin and blubber of surfacing southern right whales (SRW, Eubalaena australis) in the near shore waters of Península Valdés (PV), Argentina. Mothers and especially calves respond to gull attacks by changing their swimming speeds, resting postures and overall behaviour. Gull-inflicted wounds per calf have increased markedly since the mid-1990s. Unusually high mortality of young calves occurred locally after 2003, and increasing evidence points to gull harassment as a factor contribut...
