A New Sesquiterpene from the Brown Algae Sargassum polycystum
A new sesquiterpene, named spheciospongone C (1), and a known compound fucosterol (2) were isolated from the brown algaeSargassum polycystum. The structure and absolute configuration of compound1 were identified by comprehensive 1D, 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS spectral data and compared the circular dichroism (CD) data with the literature. Guluronic acid can inhibit copper(II) and amyloid  - β peptide coordination and reduce copper-related reactive oxygen species formation associated with Alzheimer's disease
J Inorg Biochem. 2023 May 6;245:112252. doi: 10.1016/j.jinorgbio.2023.112252. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCopper-related reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation can lead to neuropathologic degradation associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) according to amyloid cascade hypothesis. A complexing agent that can selectively chelate with copper ions and capture copper ions from the complex formed by copper ions and amyloid-β (Cu - Aβ complex) may be available in reducing ROS formation. Herein, we described applications of guluronic acid (GA), a natural oligosaccharide complexing agent obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis of ...

Antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity of silver nanoparticles biosynthesized with Cystoseira algae extracts
In this study, we successfully produced AgNPs by green synthesis with the aid of the extract of two brown algae-Cystoseira baccata (CB) and Cystoseira tamariscifolia (CT)-and characterized their physico-chemical properties. The NPs produced in both cases (Ag@CB and Ag@CT) present similar sizes, with mean diameters of around 22 nm. The antioxidant activity of the extracts and the NPs was evaluated, with the extracts showing important antioxidant activity. The bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties of both Ag@CB and Ag@CT were tested and compared with gold NPs produced in the same algae extracts as previously reported. A...

Assessing Arsenic Species in Foods Using Regularized Linear Regression of the Arsenic K-edge X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure
J Anal At Spectrom. 2022;37(6):10.1039/d1ja00445j. doi: 10.1039/d1ja00445j.ABSTRACTThe toxicity and bioavailability of arsenic is heavily dependent on its speciation. Therefore, robust and accurate methods are needed to determine arsenic speciation profiles for materials related to public health initiatives, such as food safety. Here, X-ray spectroscopies are attractive candidates as they provide in situ, nondestructive analyses of solid samples without perturbation to the arsenic species therein. This work provides a speciation analysis for three certified reference materials for the food chemistry community, whose assign...
