Coping strategies of food insecure households with children and adolescents in Uruguay, a high-income Latin American country: A qualitative study through the lens of Bourdieu's theories of capitals and practice
Appetite. 2024 Apr 27:107383. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107383. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFood insecurity has been associated with negative short, medium, and long-term health consequences, which are more detrimental for children and adolescents. These effects may depend on the coping strategies developed to deal with food shortages. The present research aimed at exploring coping strategies in food insecure households with children and adolescents in Uruguay, incorporating sociological theoretical insights from Bourdieu. A qualitative approach based on individual semi-structured interviews was used. A total of 40 inter...

Outcomes of Adjunctive Therapy with Open Arthrotomy for Patients with Septic Arthritis Due to Melioidosis: A Retrospective Study
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 Apr 30:tpmd230812. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0812. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMelioidosis is a potentially fatal infection caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Septic arthritis caused by this infection is uncommon and difficult to treat. The role of adjunctive open arthrotomy in this type of infection has not yet been elucidated. We conducted a retrospective study of patients with microbiologically confirmed melioidosis between January 2002 and December 2022. Patients with a clinical condition of septic arthritis and positive cultures for B. pseudomallei were included. Comparisons were ...

154. Temporal Interference Stimulation to the Dorsomedial Prefrontal Cortex Potentiates the Effect of Reward on Mood During Effortful Foraging
Effort-based decision-making (EBDM) has emerged as a critical paradigm for understanding the pathophysiology of motivational deficits, yet key questions remain. Notably, effort may both act as a cost and add value (e.g., Ikea effect). Previously, we used an effortful foraging task to show that effort expenditure enhances the mood-elevating impact of reward, but the neural basis of this effect remains unclear. One candidate region is dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), which has been heavily implicated in EBDM and foraging. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

Telemedicine for Ketogenic Dietary Treatment in Refractory Epilepsy and Inherited Metabolic Disease: State of Play and Future Perspectives
Stud Health Technol Inform. 2024 Apr 26;313:160-166. doi: 10.3233/SHTI240031.ABSTRACTKetogenic dietary therapies (KDT) are diets that induce a metabolic condition comparable to fasting. All types of KDT comprise a reduction in carbohydrates whilst dietary fat is increased up to 90% of daily energy expenditure. The amount of protein is normal or slightly increased. KDT are effective, well studied and established as non-pharmacological treatments for pediatric patients with refractory epilepsy and specific inherited metabolic diseases such as Glucose Transporter Type 1 Deficiency Syndrome. Patients and caregivers have to con...

Indonesia's healthcare landscape: embracing innovation in the new health regime
Curr Med Res Opin. 2024 Apr 29:1-8. doi: 10.1080/03007995.2024.2349732. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe comment highlights the intricate health issues in Indonesia, emphasizing urban-rural gaps, healthcare financing challenges, and the government's dedication to Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The country's geographical layout amplifies the struggle of providing healthcare to rural areas, resulting in substantial health concerns like high tuberculosis rates and financial vulnerability for the impoverished. The concern raised underscores the paradox of low state healthcare spending despite high household expenditures, le...

Government Fiscal Decentralization and Haze and Carbon Reduction: Evidence from the Fiscal Province-Managing-County Reform
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 26:119020. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.119020. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGovernment governance reform is not only a vital motivation for high economic quality but also an important factor in stimulating the government's environmental governance responsibility. The article empirically examines the fiscal Province-Managing-County (PMC) pilot reform on the synergic governance of haze and carbon reduction and its mechanism. The results show that the policy helps to realize the synergic governance of haze and carbon reduction, and the reform of fiscal Province-Managing-County promotes regional haze and ...

Adipose tissue rearrangement in cancer cachexia: The involvement of β3-adrenergic receptor associated pathways
Biochim Biophys Acta Rev Cancer. 2024 Apr 26:189103. doi: 10.1016/j.bbcan.2024.189103. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is a complex multiple organ syndrome that significantly contributes to reduced quality of life and increased mortality among many cancer patients. Its multifactorial nature makes its early diagnosis and effective therapeutic interventions challenging. Adipose tissue is particularly impacted by cachexia, typically through increased lipolysis, browning and thermogenesis, mainly at the onset of the disease. These processes lead to depletion of fat mass and contribute to the dysf...

Impaired Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21) Associated with Visceral Adiposity Leads to Insulin Resistance: The Core Defect in Diabetes Mellitus
Curr Diabetes Rev. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.2174/0115733998265915231116043813. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Central nervous system (CNS) is the prime regulator of signaling pathways whose function includes regulation of food intake (consumption), energy expenditure, and other metabolic responses like glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, fatty acid oxidation, and thermogenesis that have been implicated in chronic inflammatory disorders. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity are two metabolic disorders that are linked together and have become an epidemic worldwide, thus raising significant public health concerns. Fibroblast g...
