Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1489: Availability and Access to Orphan Drugs for Rare Cancers in Bulgaria: Analysis of Delays and Public Expenditures
This study aimed to explore the availability and access to orphan drugs for rare cancers in Bulgaria for the period of 2020–2023. We cross-compared data from both the European Union and national public sources to evaluate the number of available and accessible orphan drugs for rare cancers, the delay from market authorization to reimbursement, the dynamics of public expenditures, and regional disparities in access across the country. We juxtaposed the main characteristics of oncological and non-oncological orphan drugs as well. Only 15 out of 50 oncological orphan drugs that were authorized by the European Me...

State Medicaid Coverage for Tobacco Cessation Treatments and Barriers to Accessing Treatments - United States, 2018-2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Apr 11;73(14):301-306. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7314a2.ABSTRACTThe prevalence of cigarette smoking among U.S. adults enrolled in Medicaid is higher than among adults with private insurance; more than one in five adults enrolled in Medicaid smokes cigarettes. Smoking cessation reduces the risk for smoking-related disease and death. Effective treatments for smoking cessation are available, and comprehensive, barrier-free insurance coverage of these treatments can increase cessation. However, Medicaid treatment coverage and treatment access barriers vary by state. The American Lung Association coll...

Comparative analysis of energy expenditure and costs in neuroimaging
Over the past several years there has been a growing awareness of energy usage in industrial and household devices, leading to the adoption of both energy-saving modes as well as implementation of regulations to set energy efficiency standards [1,4]. Despite strides in energy efficiency in the residential and office sectors, the healthcare sector has lagged in implementation of similar initiatives [1]. One such area that has seen a rapid increase in healthcare-associated energy usage and spending without a focus on resource saving initiatives is the use of advanced imaging like CT and MRI [1]. GNB1 and obesity: Evidence for a correlation between haploinsufficiency and syndromic obesity
SummaryMost patients withGNB1 encephalopathy have developmental delay and/or intellectual disability, brain anomalies and seizures. Recently, two cases withGNB1 encephalopathy caused by haploinsufficiency have been reported that also show a Prader –Willi-like phenotype of childhood hypotonia and severe obesity. Here we present three new cases from our expert centre for genetic obesity in whichGNB1 truncating and splice variants, probably leading to haploinsufficiency, were identified. They all have obesity, hyperphagia and intellectual deficit. The clinical cases and their weight courses are presented, together with a re...

GSE260739 Characterization of a new selective glucocorticoid receptor modulator with anorexigenic activity
Series Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusObesity, a worldwide epidemic, leads to various metabolic disorders threatening human health. In response to stress or fasting, glucocorticoid (GC) levels are elevated to promote food intake. This involves GC-induced expression of the orexigenic neuropeptides in agouti-related protein (AgRP) neurons of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) via the GC receptor (GR). Here, we report a selective GR modulator (SGRM) that suppresses GR-induced transcription of genes with non-classical glucocorticoid response elements (GREs) such as Agrp-GRE,...

Comparative assessment of quality of life among adolescents with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait: evidence from Odisha, India
This study found a significantly lower health-related QOL in adolescents wit h SCD. However, most psychosocial sub-domains, for instance, worry about the illness, frequency of angry days, feeling jealousness toward other normal adolescents, and negative feelings of sadness on some days, are similarly affected in adolescents with SCT and SCD. The overall QOL of SCD individual s is more affected (percentage of affected mean score = 60.93%), followed by SCT individuals (35.63%). Healthy adolescents' QOL is relatively unaffected (13% were affected). The yearly frequency of blood transfusion received (1.7 ± 0.4) and ho...

Effect of nutritional supplementation on bone mineral density in children with sickle cell disease: protocol for an open-label, randomised controlled clinical trial
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an increase in food intake on bone mineral density and the clinical and biological complications of paediatric sickle cell disease. Methods and analysis The study is designed as an open-label randomised controlled clinical trial conducted in the Paediatrics Unit of the Orléans University Hospital Centre. Participants aged 3–16 years will be randomly divided into two groups: the intervention group will receive oral nutritional supplements (pharmacological nutritional hypercaloric products) while the control group will receive age-appropriate and gender-appropria...

Correlation between tobacco control policies and tobacco prevention in Mexico: a sub-national analysis
This study aims to determinate the correlation between tobacco control policies (TCP) and the prevalence of tobacco use in the 32 Mexican states during the 2016 –2017 period. This is an ecological study that measured TCP by the Tobacco Control Scale (TCS) which assigns a score (0–100) based on the level of these component’s implementation: price, prohibition in public spaces, expenditures of public information campaigns, publicity prohibitions, health warnings, and treatments. We analyzed the associations between the TCS scores and prevalence of tobacco use extracted from the National Survey of Drug, Alcohol and Toba...

A bout of aerobic exercise in the heat increases carbohydrate use but does not enhance the disposal of an oral glucose load, in healthy active individuals
Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2024 Apr 3. doi: 10.1152/ajpendo.00312.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe investigated if a bout of exercise in a hot environment (HEAT) would reduce the postprandial hyperglycemia induced by glucose ingestion. The hypothesis was that HEAT stimulating glycogen use would increase the disposal of the ingested glucose (i.e., OGTT; 75 g of glucose). Separated by at least 1 week, nine young-healthy individuals underwent three trials after an overnight fast in a randomized order. Two trials included 50 min of pedaling at 58±5% VO2MAX either in a thermoneutral (21±1ºC; NEUTRAL) or in a hot en...
