Poverty, work intensity, and disability: evidence from European countries
AbstractWe use 2015 –2018 European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions longitudinal data for four European countries (the UK, Germany, France, and Italy) and a dynamic trivariate panel data model to analyze the complex relationship between poverty, work intensity, and disability. We find evidence of genu ine state dependence in the three processes and feedback effects from past poverty to work intensity in all countries and from past poverty to disability in the UK, Germany, and Italy. Disability is detrimental to poverty, despite the mitigating role played by disability cash benefits. The magnitude of this ...

Spatial difference-in-differences analysis of smart city pilot policy and industrial pollution reduction: the mediating role of S & amp;T fiscal expenditure
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Mar 25. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32611-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSmart city has become one of the most important tool to achieve digital transformation and intelligent development. However, the impacts of smart city pilots (SCP) on different industrial pollution have yet to be tested, and the mechanisms of SCP affect industrial pollution could be richer. In this paper, we construct a spatial difference-in-difference model for 2004-2019 by mapping SCP policy to Chinese city data to systematically quantify the impact and its potential mechanisms of digital transformation on industrial p...

Differential intestinal effects of water and foodborne exposures of nano-TiO < sub > 2 < /sub > in the mussel Mytilus coruscus under elevated temperature
Chemosphere. 2024 Mar 23:141777. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141777. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith the wide use of nanomaterials in daily life, nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) presents potential ecological risks to marine ecosystems, which can be exacerbated by ocean warming (OW). However, most previous studies have only centered around waterborne exposure, while there is a scarcity of studies concentrating on the impact of trophic transfer exposure on organisms. We investigated the differences in toxic effects of 100 μg/L nano-TiO2 on mussels via two pathways (waterborne and foodborne) under normal (24 °C) an...

Planting the Seed for Blood Pressure Control: The Role of Plant-Based Nutrition in the Management of Hypertension
AbstractPurpose of ReviewHypertension results in significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditures. Fortunately, it is largely preventable and treatable by implementing dietary interventions, though these remain underutilized. Here, we aim to explore the role of healthy dietary patterns in hypertension management and describe approaches for busy clinicians to address nutrition effectively and efficiently with patients.Recent FindingsDASH, Mediterranean, vegetarian, and vegan diets that include minimally processed, plant-based foods as core elements have consistently shown positive effects on hypertension. Recom...

Half a Marathon a Day: Excessive Walking in People With Dementia Living in Long-Term Care Facilities
People with dementia in general walk less compared to people without cognitive impairment resulting from a lack of initiative and a decline of executive functioning.1 Two studies in community dwelling people with dementia showed an average around 3000 steps/day.2,3 In long-term care facilities (LTCFs), however, we assume there is a group of residents with dementia who daily walk impressive distances and are expected to have a high energy expenditure. To our knowledge, this has not been quantified to date. (Source: Journal of the American Medical Directors Association)

Analyzing the nexus between environmental sustainability and clean energy for the USA
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Mar 22. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32765-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEnvironmental sustainability is a key target to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, achieving these targets needs tools to pave the way for achieving SDGs and COP28 targets. Therefore, the primary objective of the present study is to examine the significance of clean energy, research and development spending, technological innovation, income, and human capital in achieving environmental sustainability in the USA from 1990 to 2022. The study employed time series econometric methods to estimate the empir...

Asymmetric effect of environment tax and spending on CO2 emissions of European Union
This study investigates the effects of environmental tax and environmental spending on CO2 emissions of 27 countries of the European Union EU27 countries using annual time series data from 1995 to 2022. The study used linear and non-linear autoregressive distributive lag (ARDL and NARDL) to examine the relationship. Estimates claim that the variables have a symmetric and asymmetric long-term and short-term relationship. The negative impacts of environmental taxes on CO2 emissions prove that emissions are reduced when polluting activities are taxed. Fiscal policy instrument such as taxation changes the behaviour of the priv...

Literature Review: Mechanism, Indications, and Clinical Efficacy of Peripheral Nerve Stimulators in Lower Extremity Pain
This study seeks to delineate efficacy of peripheral neuromodulation in the context of chronic lower extremity pain.Recent FindingsPrevailing clinical studies demonstrate evidence levels ranging from II to V (Oxford Centre of Level of Evidence) in lower limb PNS, attaining positive outcomes in pain scores, opioid use, and quality of life measures. Nerves most frequently targeted are the sciatic and femoral nerves with post-amputation pain and CRPS most commonly investigated for efficacy.SummaryPNS is a promising therapeutic modality demonstrated to be effective for a variety of nociceptive and neuropathic pain conditions i...

Improving Walking Energy Efficiency in Transtibial Amputees Through the Integration of a Low-Power Actuator in an ESAR Foot
Reducing energy consumption during walking is a critical goal for transtibial amputees. The study presents the evaluation of a semi-active prosthesis with five transtibial amputees. The prosthesis has a low-power actuator integrated in parallel into an energy-storing-and-releasing foot. The actuator is controlled to compress the foot during the stance phase, supplementing the natural compression due to the user’s dynamic interaction with the ground, particularly during the ankle dorsiflexion phase, and to release the energy stored in the foot during the push-off phase, to enhance propulsion. The control strategy is adapt...

Cohort profile: The Health, Food, Purchases and Lifestyle (SMIL) cohort - a Danish open cohort
Purpose The Health, Food, Purchases and Lifestyle (SMIL) cohort is a prospective open Danish cohort that collects electronic consumer purchase data, which can be linked to Danish nationwide administrative health and social registries. This paper provides an overview of the cohort’s baseline characteristics and marginal differences in the monetary percentage spent on food groups by sex, age and hour of the day. Participants As of 31 December 2022, the cohort included 11 214 users of a smartphone-based receipt collection application who consented to share their unique identification number for linkage to registries in...
