Birth cohort effect in atrial fibrillation: a matter of detection?
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac rhythm disorder, affecting an estimated 43 million people globally.1 In the last 20 years, the incidence of AF increased by 33% and it is expected to increase by threefold in the next three decades.1 Long-term AF management, including outpatient visits, hospitalisations and disabilities from stroke and heart failure (HF), adds substantial burden on healthcare resources and costs, accounting for 2.6% of the total annual healthcare expenditure of European countries.2 As a result, AF has emerged as a major public health concern and a potential future epidemic.1 The...

Improving Scheduling Efficiency in the Setting of Staff Turnover and Increased Surgical Volume in the Post-anesthesia Care Unit Using Census Data Trends
This article describes the successful implementation of a staffing restructuring in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) at a large Cancer Center in New York City. Retrospective census data (hourly census “snapshots” and 60-day average daily census trends) in the Main PACU was evaluated to predict PACU's busiest working hours and adjust PACU staffing targets accordingly. This restructure led to a 55% decrease in overtime expenditure in 2023 YTD compared to 2022 YTD ($264,248 and $588,063 annual d ollars spent, respectively), despite a 6.6% increase in surgical volume and 2x the amount of staff turnover in 2023 compared...

What does the Brazilian National Health Survey have to say about the influence of cigarette spending on household income?
Cad Saude Publica. 2024 Apr 22;40(3):e00175423. doi: 10.1590/0102-311XPT175423. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn a country whose indicators of population impoverishment continue to increase, it is concerning that individuals spend money to buy cigarettes instead of using this resource in actions that strengthen aspects of the well-being of their lives and that of their families. Based on the Brazilian National Health Survey conducted in 2019, the influence of spending on manufactured cigarettes on the family budget in households with at least one smoker was estimated, stratified by sociodemographic characteristics. Brazilian sm...

Effects of parliamentary amendments on municipal financing of primary health care in the Brazilian Unified National Health System
This study aims to analyze the effects of the expansion of the federal transfer of parliamentary amendments for municipal financing of primary health care (PHC) in the Brazilian Unified National Health System (SUS), from 2015 to 2020. A longitudinal study was conducted using secondary data on transfers of parliamentary amendments from the Brazilian Ministry of Health and expenditure of municipalities' own resources on public health actions and services and PHC. The effect of the transfer of parliamentary amendments on municipal financing was verified in a stratified way by population size of the municipalities, using gener...

GSE241761 Molecular and functional profiling of cell diversity and identity in the lateral superior olive, an auditory brainstem center with ascending and descending projections
Contributors : Ayse Maraslioglu ; Erika Pizzi ; Jonas Fisch ; Kathrin Kattler ; Tamara Ritter ; Eckhard FriaufSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusThe lateral superior olive (LSO), a conspicuous integration center in the auditory brainstem, contains a remarkably heterogeneous neuron population. Ascending neurons, predominantly principal neurons (pLSOs), process interaural level differences for sound localization. Descending neurons (lateral olivocochlear neurons, LOCs) provide feedback into the cochlea and likely protect from acoustic overexposure. The molecular deter...

Skill-Based Electronic Gaming Machines: Features that Mimic Video Gaming, Features that could Contribute to Harm, and Their Potential Attraction to Different Groups
AbstractNew gambling products have been developed over time as technology permits. For example, early mechanical slot machines were later replaced by electronic gaming machines (EGMs), which enabled a faster speed of play and more immersive experience. EGMs have in the decades since their invention become one of the main drivers of gambling expenditure worldwide and are one of the gambling products most strongly associated with harm. This literature review considers research relevant to a new subcategory of EGM, ‘skill-based’ EGMs, termed ‘SGMs’ here. SGMs can be highly varied in content, with some representing a m...

Methods to estimate body temperature and energy expenditure dynamics in fed and fasted laboratory mice: effects of sleep deprivation and light exposure
AbstractMonitoring body temperature and energy expenditure in freely-moving laboratory mice remains a powerful methodology used widely across a variety of disciplines –including circadian biology, sleep research, metabolic phenotyping, and the study of body temperature regulation. Some of the most pronounced changes in body temperature are observed when small heterothermic species reduce their body temperature during daily torpor. Daily torpor is an energy savi ng strategy characterized by dramatic reductions in body temperature employed by mice and other species when challenged to meet energetic demands. Typical measure...

Challenging and target-based shifting strategies for heart failure treatment: An update from the last decades
Biochem Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 20:116232. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2024.116232. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHeart failure (HF) is a major global health problem afflicting millions worldwide. Despite the significant advances in therapies and prevention, HF still carries very high morbidity and mortality, requiring enormous healthcare-related expenditure, and the search for new weapons goes on. Following initial treatment strategies targeting inotropism and congestion, attention has focused on offsetting the neurohormonal overactivation and three main therapies, including angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin II t...

Principles and practices of antimicrobial stewardship programs in Korea
Korean J Intern Med. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.3904/kjim.2023.482. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis review addresses the escalating challenge posed by antibiotic resistance, highlighting its profound impact on global public health, including increased mortality rates and healthcare expenditures. The review focuses on the need to adopt the One Health approach to effectively manage antibiotic usage across human, animal, and environmental domains. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are considered as comprehensive strategies that encompass both core and supplementary initiatives aimed at enhancing prudent antibiotic use. T...

Relationship between cachexia and short physical performance battery scores in patients with heart failure attending comprehensive outpatient cardiac rehabilitation
This study included 115 consecutive patients with HF (43% male; mean age, 78  ± 8 years) who underwent comprehensive outpatient CR. The cachexia status was assessed according to the definition proposed by the Asian Working Group on Cachexia in 2023. The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF) were used to evaluate m otor function of the lower limbs and nutritional status, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to examine the potential relationship between cachexia and low SPPB scores (≤ 9 points). The prevalence of cachexia was 30% i...

Fruitful changes? Exploring household fruit purchase decisions following comprehensive food policy regulations in Chile
This study analyzes whether, following the announcement, modification, and implementation of Chile's Food Labeling and Advertising law targeting highly processed food (occurring in 2012, 2015, and 2016, respectively), households improved their fruit purchase decisions: purchase participation (i.e., buying likelihood) and purchase quantity. Expenditure data from a representative sample of Chilean households were employed, covering two consecutive survey waves conducted in 2011/2012 and 2016/2017. After controlling for socioeconomic factors (e.g., prices and income), results indicate that only purchase participation increase...
