Neopterin in patients with COPD, asthma, and ACO: association with endothelial and lung functions
CONCLUSION: NP was related to disease severity of chronic airway diseases and involved in the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction. A high NP level may contribute to endothelial dysfunction by increasing the oxidative stress of ECs dose-dependently in a hypoxic environment. Our findings may provide a novel evaluation and therapeutic target for endothelial dysfunction related to chronic airway diseases.PMID:38637774 | PMC:PMC11027266 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02784-4 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Rate of severe exacerbations, healthcare resource utilisation and clinical outcomes in patients with COPD in low-income and middle-income countries: results from the EXACOS International Study
DISCUSSION: The findings presented here indicate that effective treatment strategies to prevent severe exacerbations in patients with COPD remain a significant unmet need in low-income and middle-income countries.PMID:38637115 | PMC:PMC11029392 | DOI:10.1136/bmjresp-2023-002101 (Source: Respiratory Care)

The association of blood eosinophil counts and FEV < sub > 1 < /sub > decline: a cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Blood eosinophil counts were associated with a faster lung function decline among healthy individuals without lung disease, independent of smoking status. The findings suggest that blood eosinophil counts contribute to the risk of faster lung function decline, particularly among younger adults without a history of lung disease.PMID:38636990 | DOI:10.1183/13993003.01037-2023 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Structural Lung Disease and Clinical Phenotype in Bronchiectasis Patients: The EMBARC CT Study
CONCLUSION: Patients with bronchiectasis have highly heterogeneous type and extent of structural lung abnormalities. Clinical utilization of airway inflammatory biomarkers in the prediction and monitoring of clinical outcomes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Expert Rev Mol Diagn. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1080/14737159.2024.2344777. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) accounts for 545 million people living with chronic respiratory disorders and is the third leading cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. COPD is a progressive disease, characterized by episodes of acute worsening of symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, and sputum production.AREAS COVERED: Airway inflammation is a prominent feature of COPD. Chronic airway inflammation results in airway structural remodeling and emphysema. Persistent airway inflammation is a ...

The Application of Diaphragm Ultrasound in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Narrative Review
This article aims to review the structural measurement and functional evaluation methods through the use of diaphragmatic ultrasound and relevant research on its application in clinical practice for COPD patients. Thus, it serves to provide valuable insights for clinical monitoring of diaphragm function in COPD patients, facilitating early clinical intervention and aiding in the recovery of diaphragm function.PMID:38634575 | DOI:10.1080/15412555.2024.2331202 (Source: COPD: Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

Uptake and 4-week quit rates from an opt-out co-located smoking cessation service delivered alongside community-based low-dose computed tomography screening within the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial
Extract Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening for lung cancer has been shown to reduce lung cancer-specific mortality in two large, randomised trials [1, 2], and implementation of screening is currently underway in many high- and middle-income countries [3]. Of those people responding to an invitation for lung cancer screening and subsequently eligible, between 30% and 50% are currently smoking [4, 5]. Evidence of the impact of screening alone on smoking cessation rates in randomised trials is mixed. Three studies have compared quit rates in participants randomised to LDCT screening versus a non-screened control gr...

An assessment of the association between patient characteristics and timely lung cancer treatment
ConclusionsWithin a Medicare Advantage population, patient demographics were found to be significantly associated with the decision to pursue surgery, but factors other than stage were not significantly associated with time to non-systemic treatment. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Influenza vaccination coverage and determinants of vaccination in peripheral arterial disease patients
Conclusions: This study highlights the low adherence to influenza vaccination in the PAD population of 2 university hospital centers. Vaccination is often related to age, and there is a need for adapted information regarding influenza consequences on cardiovascular disease overall, particularly on PAD. Addressing common information and advice about vaccination will be a challenge.PMID:38629325 | DOI:10.1024/0301-1526/a001120 (Source: VASA. Zeitschrift fur Gefasskrankheiten. Sex differences and determinants of anxiety symptoms in patients with COPD initiating pulmonary rehabilitation
CONCLUSION: Over a third of COPD patients had clinically relevant anxiety symptoms with a higher prevalence in women than men. Anxiety was associated with younger age, female gender, and impaired QoL. Early recognition and treatment of anxiety in patients with COPD is worthy of consideration for those attending PR, especially women.PMID:38631527 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107633 (Source: Respiratory Care)
