Does shortage of GPs matter? A cross-sectional study of practice population life expectancy
CONCLUSION: The number of GPs, continuity of care, and access in England are declining, and it is worrying that these features of general practice were positively associated with life expectancy.PMID:38621806 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0195 (Source: The British Journal of General Practice)

Continuity and breaches in GP care and their associations with mortality for patients with chronic disease: an observational study using Norwegian registry data
CONCLUSION: Higher disease-related and overall RGP UPC are both associated with lower mortality. However, changing RGP did not significantly affect mortality, indicating a compensatory benefit of informational and management continuity in a patient list system.PMID:38621803 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0211 (Source: The British Journal of General Practice)

Wedge resection, segmentectomy, and lobectomy: oncologic outcomes based on extent of surgical resection for ≤2 cm stage IA non-small cell lung cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with inferior performance status or lower baseline pulmonary function are more likely to receive wedge resection for clinical stage IA NSCLC ≤2 cm in size. For these small tumors, lobectomy, segmentectomy, and wedge resection provide comparable oncologic outcomes.PMID:38617767 | PMC:PMC11009583 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1693 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Impact of atrial fibrillation on 1-year outcome in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator or cardiac resynchronization therapy with defibrillator: results from the German DEVICE Registry
CONCLUSIONS: Our clinical data on an extended cohort of contemporary patients confirm the significant impact of AF, and its associated comorbidities, upon mortality and major adverse events after implantation of ICD/CRT.PMID:38617758 | PMC:PMC11009579 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-274 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Second running title: Prediction of COPD-related exacerbations
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth most important cause of death in high-income countries. Inappropriate use of COPD inhaled therapy, including the low adherence (only 10% to 40% of patients reporting an adequate compliance) may shrink or even nullify the proven benefits of these medications. As such, an accurate prediction algorithm to assess at national level the risk of COPD exacerbation might be relevant for general practictioners (GPs) to improve patient ’s therapy.
