Blood pressure responses to handgrip exercise but not apnea or mental stress are enhanced in women with a recent history of preeclampsia
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2024 May 3. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00020.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPreeclampsia is a risk factor for future cardiovascular diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear, limiting effective prevention strategies. Blood pressure responses to acute stimuli may reveal cardiovascular dysfunction not apparent at rest, identifying individuals at elevated cardiovascular risk. Therefore, we compared blood pressure responsiveness to acute stimuli between previously preeclamptic (PPE) women (34±5yr, 13±6 months postpartum) and women following healthy pregnanci...

Polymorphic transposable elements provide new insights on high-altitude adaptation in the Tibetan Plateau
Genomics. 2024 May 1;116(3):110854. doi: 10.1016/j.ygeno.2024.110854. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSeveral studies demonstrated that populations living in the Tibetan plateau are genetically and physiologically adapted to high-altitude conditions, showing genomic signatures ascribable to the action of natural selection. However, so far most of them relied solely on inferences drawn from the analysis of coding variants and point mutations. To fill this gap, we focused on the possible role of polymorphic transposable elements in influencing the adaptation of Tibetan and Sherpa highlanders. To do so, we compared high-altitud...

Pediatric hypertension as an early manifestation of cardiovascular disease in children
J Bras Nefrol. 2024 May 3;46(4):e20230159. doi: 10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2023-0159en. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn adults, cardiovascular events associated with arterial hypertension (AH) have a major impact on morbidity and mortality. In light of recent findings, AH in children has been interpreted as early cardiovascular disease (CVD), while exposure to CV risk factors in children proves to be a predictor of subclinical CVD in adults. The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association has recently updated the classifications for measuring blood pressure (BP) in adults and children. Primary AH in children is genera...

Severe heart failure and intracardiac thrombosis: going beyond the appearance for diagnosis and treatments
We describe the case of a 45-year-old female affected by asthma and nasal polyposis who presented to the emergency department because of worsening dyspnea and paresthesia of the left lower limb. Comprehensive instrumental examinations revealed the presence of severe left ventricle dysfunction, intra-cardiac thrombus, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, lung infiltrates, polyserositis, and neurological involvements. Finally, the patient was diagnosed with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), formerly Churg-Strauss syndrome, a rare vasculitis of small-medium blood vessels with several organ involvement...

The current paradigm of cardiac troponin increase among athletes
Monaldi Arch Chest Dis. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.4081/monaldi.2024.2878. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough it is known that exercise improves cardiovascular health and extends life expectancy, a significant number of people may also experience an elevation in cardiac troponin levels as a result of exercise. For many years, researchers have argued whether exercise-induced cardiac troponin rises are a consequence of a physiological or pathological reaction and whether they are clinically significant. Differences in cardiac troponin elevation and cardiac remodeling can be seen between athletes participating in different type...

Age-specific and cause-specific mortality contributions to the socioeconomic gap in life expectancy in Germany, 2003-21: an ecological study
We examined how age-specific and cause-specific mortality contributions to the socioeconomic gap in life expectancy have changed at the area level in Germany over time.METHODS: In this ecological study, official German population and cause-of-death statistics provided by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany for the period Jan 1, 2003, to Dec 31, 2021, were linked to district-level data of the German Index of Socioeconomic Deprivation. Life-table and decomposition methods were applied to calculate life expectancy by area-level deprivation quintile and decompose the life-expectancy gap between the most and least deprive...

Androgen Deprivation Therapy/Androgen Receptor Signaling Inhibitor Treatments for Prostate Cancer: Pathophysiology and Review of Effects on Cardiovascular Disease
This article critically reviews the associations between androgen deprivation therapy, androgen receptor signaling inhibitors, and cardiovascular complications such as prolonged QT interval, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, venous thromboembolism, and peripheral arterial occlusive disease. These unfavorable outcomes reinforce the need for regular cardiovascular screening of patients undergoing androgen deprivation for the management of prostate cancer.PMID:38701845 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001687 (Source: Cancer Control)

Dietary intake and glutamine-serine metabolism control pathologic vascular stiffness
Cell Metab. 2024 Apr 24:S1550-4131(24)00130-X. doi: 10.1016/j.cmet.2024.04.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPerivascular collagen deposition by activated fibroblasts promotes vascular stiffening and drives cardiovascular diseases such as pulmonary hypertension (PH). Whether and how vascular fibroblasts rewire their metabolism to sustain collagen biosynthesis remains unknown. Here, we found that inflammation, hypoxia, and mechanical stress converge on activating the transcriptional coactivators YAP and TAZ (WWTR1) in pulmonary arterial adventitial fibroblasts (PAAFs). Consequently, YAP and TAZ drive glutamine and serine c...
