Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes as a therapeutic target for cardiovascular diseases
Front Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 17;15:1398381. doi: 10.3389/fphar.2024.1398381. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are currently the leading cause of death worldwide. In 2022, the CVDs contributed to 19.8 million deaths globally, accounting for one-third of all global deaths. With an aging population and changing lifestyles, CVDs pose a major threat to human health. Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs) are communication platforms between cellular organelles and regulate cellular physiological functions, including apoptosis, autophagy, and programmed necrosis. Further research has sh...

Needs-based considerations for the role of low-dose aspirin along the CV risk continuum
Am J Prev Cardiol. 2024 Apr 15;18:100675. doi: 10.1016/j.ajpc.2024.100675. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTCardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death worldwide. The risk of a cardiovascular (CV) event is not static and increases along a continuum, making identification and management complex. Aspirin has been the cornerstone of antiplatelet therapy in CV risk reduction and remains the only antiplatelet agent with current guideline recommendations throughout the CV risk continuum. In light of recent trials, the role of aspirin in CVD prevention in asymptomatic patients has been downgraded in clinical guide...

Unlocking the gut-heart axis: exploring the role of gut microbiota in cardiovascular health and disease
CONCLUSION: The gut microbiota is emerging as a potential therapeutic target for CVD prevention and management. However, current research has limitations, including the need for larger and more diverse studies, the challenges of establishing causality, and concerns regarding the long-term consequences and safety of gut microbiota modulation. Despite these limitations, understanding the gut-heart axis holds promise for the development of personalized therapies and interventions for cardiovascular health. Further research is needed to expand our knowledge and address the ethical and safety issues associated with gut microbio...

Remodeling Intestinal Microbiota Alleviates Severe Combined Hyperlipidemia-Induced Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis and Atherosclerosis in LDLR(-/-) Hamsters
In this study, CHL was induced in low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient (LDLR-/-) hamsters through an 8-week high-fat and high-cholesterol (HFHC) diet or a 4-month high-cholesterol (HC) diet. Placebo or antibiotics were administered through separate or cohousing approaches. Analysis through 16S rDNA sequencing revealed that intermittent antibiotic treatment and the cohousing approach effectively modulated the gut microbiota community without impacting its overall abundance in LDLR-/- hamsters exhibiting severe CHL. Antibiotic treatment mitigated HFHC diet-induced obesity, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia, enhancing t...

Carotid intimamedia thickness in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that extreme TG elevations in severe HTG patients are not significantly associated with carotid IMT, in contrast to the increased IMT seen in FH patients. These findings add perspective to the complex relationship between severe HTG and ASCVD risk.PMID:38694144 | PMC:PMC11060956 | DOI:10.1016/j.athplu.2024.04.001 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Effects of Recombinant Human Lecithin Cholesterol Acyltransferase on Lipoprotein Metabolism in Humans
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that an acute increase in LCAT activity drives greater flux of cholesteryl ester through the reverse cholesterol transport pathway without significantly altering the clearance and production of the main HDL proteins and without affecting the metabolism of APOB100-lipoproteins. Long-term elevations of LCAT might, therefore, have beneficial effects on total body cholesterol balance and atherogenesis.PMID:38695168 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.123.320387 (Source: Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology)

Combining echocardiography and fluoroscopy imaging in real time for left atrial appendage occlusion - single center experience from Poland
CONCLUSIONS: This study marks the inaugural application of FI in Polish LAAO procedures. FI, offering enhanced visualization and reduced procedure times, holds promise in improving patient safety and treatment efficacy. We recommend its consideration as a standard visualization technique for LAAO procedures.PMID:38693977 | PMC:PMC11059017 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138575 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Should varicocele screening be conducted in men diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency? A prospective study
CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant association between left GSV diameter and varicocele (p = 0.004). Varicocele screening can be carried out with 71.4% sensitivity in adult male patients with a left GSV diameter of 5.35 cm and above. Both cardiovascular surgeons and radiologists can conduct varicocele screening by measuring pampiniform veins in patients with a left GSV diameter of 5.35 cm and above. This approach has the potential to reduce the incidence of varicocele and associated infertility.PMID:38693978 | PMC:PMC11059024 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138486 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

LUNet: deep learning for the segmentation of arterioles and venules in high resolution fundus images
This study aims to automate the segmentation of retinal arterioles and venules (A/V) from digital fundus images (DFI), as changes in the spatial distribution of retinal microvasculature are indicative of cardiovascular diseases, positioning the eyes as windows to cardiovascular health. Approach. We utilized active learning to create a new DFI dataset with 240 crowd-sourced manual A/V segmentations performed by 15 medical students and reviewed by an ophthalmologist. We then developed LUNet, a novel deep learning architecture optimized for high-resolution A/V segmentation. The LUNet model features a double dilated convolutio...
