Sex Differences in Mortality Risk after the First Hospitalisation due to Lower Extremity Peripheral Arterial Disease
CONCLUSION: The five year mortality risk has increased, and females face a lower mortality risk than males. Lower extremity PAD still carries unfavourable long term consequences compared with the general population.PMID:38697256 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2024.04.039 (Source: PubMed: Eur J Vasc Endovasc ...)

Early-life exposures and long-term health: adverse gestational environments and the programming of offspring renal and vascular disease
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00383.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccording to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis, exposure to certain environmental influences during early life may be a key determinant of fetal development and short- and long-term offspring health. Indeed, adverse conditions encountered during the fetal, perinatal, and early childhood stages can alter normal development and growth, as well as put the offspring at elevated risk of developing long-term health conditions in adulthood, including chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascul...

Succinylation of Park 7 Activates a Protective Metabolic Response to Acute Kidney Injury
In this study we show in vitro and in vivo that Park7 has a crucial role in protection from AKI, and upregulated peroxisome activity. These data in combination with published results of Park7's protective role in cardiovascular damage and chronic kidney disease lead us to hypothesize that succinylation of Park7 may ameliorate oxidative damage resulting from AKI and prevent disease progression. This novel mechanism provides a potential therapeutic mechanism that can be targeted.PMID:38695076 | DOI:10.1152/ajprenal.00062.2024 (Source: Am J Physiol Renal P...)

Combining echocardiography and fluoroscopy imaging in real time for left atrial appendage occlusion - single center experience from Poland
CONCLUSIONS: This study marks the inaugural application of FI in Polish LAAO procedures. FI, offering enhanced visualization and reduced procedure times, holds promise in improving patient safety and treatment efficacy. We recommend its consideration as a standard visualization technique for LAAO procedures.PMID:38693977 | PMC:PMC11059017 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138575 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Should varicocele screening be conducted in men diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency? A prospective study
CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant association between left GSV diameter and varicocele (p = 0.004). Varicocele screening can be carried out with 71.4% sensitivity in adult male patients with a left GSV diameter of 5.35 cm and above. Both cardiovascular surgeons and radiologists can conduct varicocele screening by measuring pampiniform veins in patients with a left GSV diameter of 5.35 cm and above. This approach has the potential to reduce the incidence of varicocele and associated infertility.PMID:38693978 | PMC:PMC11059024 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138486 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Study of the metabolic syndrome severity index as a predictive factor of a major cardiovascular event in premenopausal women with systemic lupus erythematosus
CONCLUSIONS: The MetSx-IMC severity index, contrary to the binary approaches, is recommended to evaluate MS as a predictor of MACE in SLE patients. Offering improved and more accurate prognosis in patients at risk of developing MCE.PMID:38697892 | DOI:10.1016/j.medcli.2024.01.041 (Source: Medicina Clinica)

Effects of Recombinant Human Lecithin Cholesterol Acyltransferase on Lipoprotein Metabolism in Humans
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that an acute increase in LCAT activity drives greater flux of cholesteryl ester through the reverse cholesterol transport pathway without significantly altering the clearance and production of the main HDL proteins and without affecting the metabolism of APOB100-lipoproteins. Long-term elevations of LCAT might, therefore, have beneficial effects on total body cholesterol balance and atherogenesis.PMID:38695168 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.123.320387 (Source: Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology)

Sexual dimorphism in atherosclerotic plaques of aged Ldlr < sup > -/- < /sup > mice
CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, our findings highlight that sex is a variable that contributes to immunological differences in the atherosclerotic plaque environment in mice and provide valuable insights for further preclinical studies into the impact of sex on the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis.PMID:38698438 | DOI:10.1186/s12979-024-00434-3 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

The Effects of FABP4 on Cardiovascular Disease in the Aging Population
Curr Atheroscler Rep. 2024 May 3. doi: 10.1007/s11883-024-01196-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) plays a role in lipid metabolism and cardiovascular health. In this paper, we cover FABP4 biology, its implications in atherosclerosis from observational studies, genetic factors affecting FABP4 serum levels, and ongoing drug development to target FABP4 and offer insights into future FABP4 research.RECENT FINDINGS: FABP4 impacts cells through JAK2/STAT2 and c-kit pathways, increasing inflammatory and adhesion-related proteins. In addition, FABP4 induces angiogenesis and va...

Cholesterol and Immune Microenvironment: Path Towards Tumorigenesis
Curr Nutr Rep. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1007/s13668-024-00542-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Since obesity is a major risk factor for many different types of cancer, examining one of the most closely associated comorbidities, such as hypercholesterolemia, is crucial to understanding how obesity causes cancer. Hypercholesterolemia is usually associated with many cardiovascular complications such as hypertension, angina, and atherosclerosis. In addition, cholesterol may be a major factor in increasing cancer risk. Cancer patients who received statins, an anti-hypercholesteremic medicine, demonstrated improved...

Genetic and inflammatory factors underlying gestational diabetes mellitus: a review
Front Endocrinol (Lausanne). 2024 Apr 17;15:1399694. doi: 10.3389/fendo.2024.1399694. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) poses a significant global health concern, impacting both maternal and fetal well-being. Early detection and treatment are imperative to mitigate adverse outcomes during pregnancy. This review delves into the pivotal role of insulin function and the influence of genetic variants, including SLC30A8, CDKAL1, TCF7L2, IRS1, and GCK, in GDM development. These genetic variations affect beta-cell function and insulin activity in crucial tissues, such as muscle, disrupting glucose regul...
