Drivers of access to cardiovascular health care for rural Indigenous Peoples: a scoping review
CONCLUSION: The findings are consistent with other literature exploring access to health care for rural Indigenous Peoples. This review offers a novel approach to summarising literature by situating the themes within the context of equity and rights for Indigenous Peoples. This review also highlighted the need for further research in this area to be conducted in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand.PMID:38697785 | DOI:10.22605/RRH8674 (Source: Rural and Remote Health)

Succinylation of Park 7 Activates a Protective Metabolic Response to Acute Kidney Injury
In this study we show in vitro and in vivo that Park7 has a crucial role in protection from AKI, and upregulated peroxisome activity. These data in combination with published results of Park7's protective role in cardiovascular damage and chronic kidney disease lead us to hypothesize that succinylation of Park7 may ameliorate oxidative damage resulting from AKI and prevent disease progression. This novel mechanism provides a potential therapeutic mechanism that can be targeted.PMID:38695076 | DOI:10.1152/ajprenal.00062.2024 (Source: American Journal of Physiology. Renal Physiology)

Early-life exposures and long-term health: adverse gestational environments and the programming of offspring renal and vascular disease
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00383.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccording to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis, exposure to certain environmental influences during early life may be a key determinant of fetal development and short- and long-term offspring health. Indeed, adverse conditions encountered during the fetal, perinatal, and early childhood stages can alter normal development and growth, as well as put the offspring at elevated risk of developing long-term health conditions in adulthood, including chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascul...

A narrative review of the comparative safety of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis
Expert Opin Drug Saf. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1080/14740338.2024.2348575. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) have improved the outcomes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). DMARDs are classified into three categories: conventional synthetic DMARDs, biological DMARDs (including biosimilars), and targeted synthetic DMARDs. DMARDs, by way of their effect on the immune system, are associated with increased risk of adverse events, including infections, malignancies, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal perforations, and other less common events.AREAS COVERED: In th...

Should varicocele screening be conducted in men diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency? A prospective study
CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant association between left GSV diameter and varicocele (p = 0.004). Varicocele screening can be carried out with 71.4% sensitivity in adult male patients with a left GSV diameter of 5.35 cm and above. Both cardiovascular surgeons and radiologists can conduct varicocele screening by measuring pampiniform veins in patients with a left GSV diameter of 5.35 cm and above. This approach has the potential to reduce the incidence of varicocele and associated infertility.PMID:38693978 | PMC:PMC11059024 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138486 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Observing the Clinical Course of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in Medicaid Real-World Healthcare Data
CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to use diagnosis and procedure codes from real-world Medicaid claims to document the clinical course in DMD. Findings were consistent with previously published estimates from commercially insured populations and clinical registries; and contribute to the expanding body of real-world evidence around clinical progression of patients with DMD.PMID:38698169 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-024-02865-2 (Source: Adv Data)

Continuous motion of particles attached to cavitation bubbles
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Apr 28:106888. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106888. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicrobubble-mediated therapeutic gene or drug delivery is a promising strategy for various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but the efficiency and precision need to be improved. Here, we propose a cavitation bubble-driven drug delivery strategy that can be applied to CVDs. A bubble-pulse-driving theory was proposed, and the formula of time-averaged thrust driven by bubble pulses was derived. The continuous motion of particles propelled by cavitation bubbles in the ultrasonic field is investigated experimentally by high-...

Medication use before and after bariatric surgery: 5-year results from a randomised controlled trial of banded Roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus sleeve gastrectomy in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes
CONCLUSION: Both SR-LRYGB and LSG reduced requirement for diabetic and cardiovascular medications, but increased requirement for nutritional supplementation, analgesia and psychiatric medications. There was a greater reduction in oral anti-diabetic medication prescriptions following SR-LRYGB compared to LSG, but no other difference in medication usage between surgical groups was found.PMID:38696831 | DOI:10.26635/6965.6442 (Source: New Zealand Medical Journal)

A Role of ROS-dependent Defects in Mitochondrial Dynamic and Autophagy in Carbon Black Nanoparticle-mediated Myocardial Cell Damage
This study explored the mechanisms of CBNPs-mediated myocardial toxicity. CBNPs were given to mice through intra-tracheal instillation and it was demonstrated that the particles can be taken up into the cardiac tissue. Exposure to CBNPs induced cardiomyocyte inflammation and apoptosis. In combination with in vitro experiments, we showed that CBNPs increased the ROS and induced mitochondria fragmentation. Functionally, CBNPs-exposed cardiomyocyte exhibited depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential, release of cytochrome c, and activation of pro-apoptotic BAX, thereby initiating programmed cell death. On the oth...

Interplay between Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1 and mitochondria in cardiac diseases
Free Radic Biol Med. 2024 Apr 30:S0891-5849(24)00426-X. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2024.04.239. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIschemic heart diseases and cardiomyopathies are characterized by hypoxia, energy starvation and mitochondrial dysfunction. HIF-1 acts as a cellular oxygen sensor, tuning the balance of metabolic and oxidative stress pathways to provide ATP and sustain cell survival. Acting on mitochondria, HIF-1 regulates different processes such as energy substrate utilization, oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial dynamics. In turn, mitochondrial homeostasis modifications impact HIF-1 activity. This under...

Clinicopathologic Spectrum and Outcomes of Infections Diagnosed on Graft Biopsies and Nephrectomy in Live Renal Allograft Recipients: An Institutional Experience
CONCLUSIONS: BK polyoma virus infection was the most common infection affecting the renal allograft in our study. Although fungal infections caused the highest mortality among our patients, bacterial graft pyelonephritis was responsible for maximum graft failure. Correctly identifying infections on histology is important so that graft and patient life can be prolonged.PMID:38695589 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2023.0200 (Source: Experimental and Clinical Transplantation : official journal of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation)
