Looking for Advice From Non-Trads (Working Full Time and Weak Content Background)
Hello everyone!
So I will actually be an MCAT retaker. I tested this past March, but did very very poorly and want to start from scratch as I am weak in essentially every subject. My mistake was taking the test with a lot of content gaps in addition to being burnt out from other obligations. I've been taking time off, so I think I am ready to start studying again. I need to do really well this time around and am aiming for a minimum of 515+.
I'm planning to retake in January 2019,...

Why is it so wrong to dislike dealing with sick patients?
Was having a conversation with a fellow plastics applicant the other day about what kind of practice we want to have down the road. He said that he likes "helping people in need" and wants to do the burn cases and other long surgeries that involve tons of inpatient care. I said that I'd quit medicine before doing that and mostly just want to do short, outpatient procedures. Not necessarily only cosmetics, but nothing that requires more than at most a single day of admission or that has a...

Go from burnout to recharged & energized
If the lack of control in the ED, the unfairness & unrealistic expectations by administration, and the chaotic circadian rhythm disruption has depressed your attitude, self confidence and hope for the future and burned you out, I'm here to tell you, there is a better way. Maybe it's a new EM job, or simply cutting work hours. Maybe for someone else, it's another residency, a fellowship, leaving Medicine altogether or something entirely different. What it is for any specific individual, I...

Burnt out
Only been in the game for a few years but completely burnt out at big box. Every day is worse than the last. More demands, more metrics, more scripts, less and less hours. I laugh at the image I had of myself when in pharmacy school that I would actually be helping people and counseling them throughly. Now I am lucky I am able to smile at people, not close the pharmacy gates in the middle of my shift, and counseling is literally yelling at them in the drive thru from verification about which...

Stick with SOAP specialty or try for originally desired specialty?
Usmd with low stats 220s/220/pass and a shelf retake with 12 psych interviews. Ranked all programs, had 4 "safeties" 2 of which were relatively new programs. Rest were mid or low tier other than my top. Did not send post communication other than #1.
Didn't match psych but managed to soap into FM. The thought of doing rotations like surgery and ob gyn again is honestly the biggest mental hurdle in my mind. I really am feeling burnt out and am pretty disenfranchised with medicine after not...

From ortho to... IM
Hey everyone,
I am currently training in ortho and thinking about switching to IM. I think I don't like it anymore. I'm not depressed or burnt out. I'm a good resident and I have great relationship with everyone on the program. I just don't enjoy it anymore.
I went into it first hand for the trauma surgery. Boy I loved it when I was a med student! It was such a thrill. I also was very interested in every other aspect of the career. After 2 years of residency, not anymore. I don’t dislike...
