Psychiatry as a second residency?
I'm a burned out ER physician looking for a new career path. I was exhausted before covid, but even as we round the corner from the pandemic I am still feeling lost and disinterested in my job. For the past year I have been working part-time in addiction medicine and have really enjoyed this work. I find the work fascinating and rewarding. I have been able to get a few part time jobs with my credentials, but most full time jobs want a board certified psychiatrist so I am considering going... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What should I upload into PCOM portal?
So I have already been accepted into my second choice DO school, but my top choice is PCOM-PA and I would like to try everything I can to get an interview there. I actually already received an II from one of the other PCOM locations, but withdrew my application for that location because I prefer the school that has already accepted me. My concern is that my secondary application for PCOM-PA is very lacking. I had written it in May when I was rather burned out from taking the MCAT and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

RFA w/ Stryker Venom Needles
Going to start using Venom needles for RFA. Office bought 20G 100mm length, 10mm active tip probes for all RFAs. Those of you using Venom needles, do you use different active tips for cervical vs lumbar/SI/genicular? If so do you mind posting what are you using? Worried the 10mm active tip in the cervical region will cause too large of a burn and risk of getting closer to vital structures being burned. Thoughts? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Dentist Wanting to Switch to Medicine
Hi Everyone, I am a practicing dentist of a couple years seriously contemplating going to medical school. Long story short, I find no fulfillment in my career as a dentist and feel burnt out despite only practicing a few years. I find what I do is not meaningful and appreciated by my community, my family, my patients, and most importantly, myself. I have worked in many settings from public health to private practices catering to different socioeconomic and diverse populations. While before... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Neurology job market in 2050????
I know that neurologists are currently hugely in demand. But my biggest fear is that residency programs churn out 1000 neurologists every year. Sure, we may not feel the burn now, but in 2050 when I will be in the peak of my career at 55 years old, there will be around 30,000 more neurologists than there are now. If we get conservative and estimate that half of the current workforce of 20,000 neurologists are still working, that’s 40,000 practicing neurologists in 2050. Chances are I’d be... From retail pharmacist to software engineer
This is a quick post to help give others hope who feel stuck in pharmacy or burned out. This is about one pharmacist who has worked in retail for 10 years at CVS. They were a very high-performer but decided on a career change. About two years ago they started to learn programming on their own. They also did a one month bootcamp that was free. They were in their 30s and have two young children without childcare so they could only study part time. They went from making about $140,000 per... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

RFA pain
Odd case yesterday and I'm hoping to get some hive mind input. Did an RFA on a patient and during the ablation around 70 degrees Celsius mark during ramp up the patient had significant axial low back pain. Prior to the burn Took AP,15,30, and lateral imaging and everything looked great. Motor testing negative too. Gave some additional lido 2% and restarted with repeat pain. Repeat imaging good, aspiration neg, and motor stim negative again. Eventually I wound up removing two probes and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How much studying is needed to pass initial cert boards?
Hi everyone! I'm a recently graduated adult psych resident who is scheduled to take the initial certification boards this September. I am taking July to end of September off to recuperate after spending the last 2 years as a burned out pandemic resident before starting at a group practice. I want to enjoy this time off and decompress but also feel the urge to study for a few hours most days of the week. I want to strike a good balance between studying enough to pass comfortably but not... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

GRE for ortho - Should I retake the GRE?
Hello everyone! Ortho hopeful here... I spent 3 weeks (1 week PT, 2 weeks FT) studying for the GRE, gave my best shot, and scored 160/160/4.5. My understanding is that these are extremely mediocre scores by grad school standards. Current and past residents, what are your thoughts on this score? And do you think I should retake this exam before the first wave of deadlines in early August? NGL, I am very burnt out... :') Thanks in advance! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Am I fit to be in medicine?
I don’t know if this is a rant or ****post but I’m gloomy/miserable about my life recently. Is this girl problems or is this life and medicine? I’m finishing up first year, I’m 1-1.5 standard deviations above my class test scores but I’m burnt out and just moody. I just went to music festival with my college friends who all work in tech and it was such a good time reliving our college days for the weekend. It was nostalgia and so sad when we flew our aways back to reality *tear tear. They... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
