Exploring the Therapeutic Potential of Flavonoids in the Management of Cancer
Curr Pharm Biotechnol. 2024 Apr 8. doi: 10.2174/0113892010297456240327062614. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFlavonoids are a class of polyphenolic compounds that can be classified into six distinct categories, namely isoflavonoids, flavanones, flavanols, flavonols, flavones, and anthocyanidins. These compounds are naturally occurring and can be found in a diverse range of plant species. Flavonoids, a class of bioactive compounds, are mostly obtained through the consumption of vegetables, fruits and plant-derived beverages such as wine, cocoa-based products and green tea. Flavonoids have been demonstrated to exhibit a diver...

Vector transmission of parsley yellow leaf curl virus by the leafhopper Austroagallia sinuata
In this study, the ability ofAustroagallia leafhoppers, which are commonly found on vegetable farms in Kerman province (Iran), to transmit this virus was studied. After a two-day acquisition access period,Austroagallia sp. successfully transmitted the virus from PYLCV-infected parsley to healthy seedlings. On the basis of male genitalia morphology, the species of leafhopper was identified asA. sinuata. This is the first report of a transmission of plant virus by a member of the genusAustroagallia. Evaluation of school-based interventions including homework to promote healthy lifestyles: a systematic review with meta-analysis
ConclusionSchool-based interventions including homework and extracurricular activities were shown to improve nutritional behaviour, step counts, and LPA. Despite some statistically significant results, the effects of BMI and waist circumference are still unclear. Further studies are needed to demonstrate that these intervention s can represent an effective strategy for obesity prevention. (Source: Journal of Public Health)

Genetic dissection of green pod yield in dolichos bean, an orphan vegetable legume, using new molecular markers
J Appl Genet. 2024 Apr 8. doi: 10.1007/s13353-024-00865-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the era of genomic-assisted breeding for crop improvement, developing new molecular markers and validating them for use in breeding programs are the prelude. Dolichos bean is one of the most important vegetable legume crops owing to its nutrient-rich green pods used as vegetables. Limitations in genomic resources, including molecular markers, restrict the accelerated improvement of the crop. In the present investigation, a set of 430 new simple sequence repeat markers was developed from sequence information of a reference variety. T...

Indole-3-Carbinol Promotes Apoptosis and Inhibits the Metastasis of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma by Downregulating the Wnt/ β-Catenin Signaling Pathway
This study explored the role of I3C in ESCC in vitro and in vivo by focusing on the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. MTT and flow cytometry were used to assess cell viability and apoptosis in EC18 and TE1 cells, while wound healing and transwell assays were used to investigate cell migration and invasion in vitro. Expression of β-catenin, c-myc, and cyclin D1 was determined by Western blot; LiCl (an agonist of the canonical Wnt signaling that inhibits GSK3β activity) was used to assess the role of I3C on the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. For in vivo experiments, nude BALB/c mice bearing EC18 xenografts were treated ...

Production of Toxins by the Gut Microbiota: The Role of Dietary Protein
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis narrative review will discuss how the intake of specific protein sources (animal and vegetable) providing specific amino acids can modulate the gut microbiota composition and generate toxins. A better understanding of these interactions could lead to more appropriate dietary recommendations to improve gut health and mitigate the risk of complications promoted by the toxic metabolites formed by the gut microbiota.Recent FindingsGut microbiota is vital in maintaining human health by influencing immune function and key metabolic pathways. Under unfavorable conditions, the gut microbiota can produ...

Synthesis, characterization and antifungal properties of maleopimaric anhydride modified chitosan
In this study, rosin derivative maleopimaric anhydride (MPA) was combined with biodegradable and antifungal chitosan (CS) to enhance its antifungal and preservative properties. The modified compounds were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR spectra and XRD, and the in vitro antifungal properties of the modified compounds were evaluated by the radial growth assay and the minimal inhibitory concentration assay. The preservation effect on small mandarin oranges and longan was studied. The analysis revealed that the modification product (CSMA) of MPA access to C6-OH of CS had a better antifungal effect. In addition, CSMA was more en...
