Konjac glucomannan-based highly antibacterial active films loaded with thyme essential oil through bacterial cellulose nanofibers/Ag nanoparticles stabilized Pickering emulsions
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 25:131875. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131875. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to develop novel konjac glucomannan (KGM)-based highly antibacterial active films, where five types of films were prepared and compared. The microstructure results showed that KGM-based films loaded with thyme essential oil (TEO) through bacterial cellulose nanofibers/Ag nanoparticles (BCNs/Ag nanoparticles) stabilized Pickering emulsions (Type V films) displayed the smoothest surface and the most evenly dispersed TEO droplets as compared with the other four types of films. Moreover, Type V ...

Occurrence of parasites in waters used for crops irrigation and vegetables from the Savannah of Bogot á, Colombia
In this study, the presence of parasites in surface water used for irrigation of crops (n = 96) and vegetables (celery and lettuce) (n = 120), from the Former La Ramada irrigation district, was evaluated using conventional and molecular parasitological methods. Our findings showed contamination of irrigation systems in the study area with domestic wastewater, demonstrated by the presence of Ancylostomatidae eggs, Ascaris spp., Hymenolepis spp., Trichuris spp., Capillaria spp., Giardia spp. cysts, and oocysts of Toxoplasma gondii and Cryptosporidium spp. A prevalence of 33% and 23.3% was calculated for helminths and protozo...

Antimicrobial Efficacy of a Vegetable Oil Plasticizer in PVC Matrices
Polymers (Basel). 2024 Apr 10;16(8):1046. doi: 10.3390/polym16081046.ABSTRACTThe growing prevalence of bacterial and viral infections, highlighted by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, urgently calls for new antimicrobial strategies. To this end, we have synthesized and characterized a novel fatty acid epoxy-ester plasticizer for polymers, named GDE. GDE is not only sustainable and user-friendly but also demonstrates superior plasticizing properties, while its epoxy components improve the heat stability of PVC-based matrices. A key feature of GDE is its ability to confer antimicrobial properties to surfaces. Indeed, upon contac...

Examination of eating competence in a geo-diverse sample with metabolic syndrome
Appetite. 2024 Apr 25:107373. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107373. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEating competence (EatC) is an intra-individual approach to eating attitudes and behaviors associated with greater well-being. EatC research has not included persons with confirmed metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, EatC of persons with MetS was explored to identify unique associations and inform implementation of MetS lifestyle interventions using baseline data from a multisite, randomized trial of a 2-year lifestyle intervention with MetS. EatC, measured with the Satter Eating Competence Inventory 2.0 (ecSI 2.0™), was exami...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1711: The Role of Phytonutrient Kaempferol in the Prevention of Gastrointestinal Cancers: Recent Trends and Future Perspectives
r Vikas Yadav In recent years, kaempferol, a natural flavonoid present in various fruits and vegetables, has received significant attention in gastrointestinal cancer research due to its varied therapeutic effects. Kaempferol has been proven to alter several molecular mechanisms and pathways, such as the PI3/Akt, mTOR, and Erk/MAPK pathway involved in cancer progression, showing its inhibitory effects on cell proliferation, survival, angiogenesis, metastasis, and migration. Kaempferol is processed in the liver and small intestine, but limited bioavailability has been a major concern in the clinical implications of ka...

In Silico and In Vitro Study of Isoquercitrin against Kidney Cancer and Inflammation by Triggering Potential Gene Targets
Curr Issues Mol Biol. 2024 Apr 12;46(4):3328-3341. doi: 10.3390/cimb46040208.ABSTRACTKidney cancer has emerged as a major medical problem in recent times. Multiple compounds are used to treat kidney cancer by triggering cancer-causing gene targets. For instance, isoquercitrin (quercetin-3-O-β-d-glucopyranoside) is frequently present in fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs, and foods and drinks made from plants. Our previous study predicted using protein-protein interaction (PPI) and molecular docking analysis that the isoquercitrin compound can control kidney cancer and inflammation by triggering potential gene targets of ...
