Preconception diet in adolescence and its association with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and preterm birth. Results from The HUNT study
Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 18:1-22. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000746. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOur aim was to estimate associations of adolescent dietary patterns and meal habits with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and preterm birth. We used data from a prospective cohort study (Norwegian Young-HUNT1) where dietary information was collected during adolescence and pregnancy outcomes were obtained through record linkage to the Norwegian national birth registry. The outcomes were HDP, hypertension, preeclampsia/ eclampsia, and preterm birth in the first pregnancy and in any pregnancy. Diet was self-reported from valida...

Highlights from the literature
Fruit juice – good for you? Child or adult, drinking fruit juice must be a great way of contributing to your five-a-day of fruits and vegetables. There is a lot of free sugar in 100% fruit juice and no fibre. Do these high sugar drinks contribute to obesity? Nguyen M et al (JAMA Pediatr 2024;178:237–246) have completed a systematic review focussing on the evidence that fruit juice has an impact on weight gain and BMI by examining MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases searching up to 18 May 2023. They looked for prospective cohort studies of at least 6 months and randomised clinical trials (RCTs) of at least 2...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1525: Dichloroacetate and Quercetin Prevent Cell Proliferation, Induce Cell Death and Slow Tumor Growth in a Mouse Model of HPV-Positive Head and Neck Cancer
h Miskimins Elevated glucose uptake and production of lactate are common features of cancer cells. Among many tumor-promoting effects, lactate inhibits immune responses and is positively correlated with radioresistance. Dichloroacetate (DCA) is an inhibitor of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase that decreases lactate production. Quercetin is a flavonoid compound found in fruits and vegetables that inhibits glucose uptake and lactate export. We investigated the potential role and mechanisms of DCA, quercetin, and their combination, in the treatment of HPV-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, an antigenic cancer su...

Association of sugary drinks, carbonated beverages, vegetable and fruit juices, sweetened and black coffee, and green tea with subsequent depression: a five-year cohort study
Evidence on the impact of beverage consumption on depression is limited in the Asian population. Specifically, there is little information available on vegetable and fruit juices, while whole vegetables and fruits are reportedly protective against depression. Furthermore, evidence is scarce in differentiating the impacts of sweetened and black coffee. We aimed to examine the association of the consumption of total sugary drinks, carbonated beverages, vegetable and fruit juices, sweetened and black coffee, and green tea with subsequent depression in a general population sample. Dietary diversity and preferences among pregnant women and its association with anaemia
This study aims to assess dietary choices of pregnant women and its relationship with their anaemia status.A mixed-method study comprising a survey and three focus group discussions (FGDs). The survey included 380 adult pregnant women with data collected on food choices, preferences and haemoglobin (Hb) status.More than 50% of women in the study had Hb concentration < 11.0 g/dl; mean Hb was 10.24 g/dl (SD = 1.59). Univariate analysis was used to generate descriptive tabulations for socio-demographic characteristics of respondents, dietary choices for women and anaemia status. T-test and bivariate analysis between diet...

Dietary intake changes the associations between long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and the surrogate indicators of insulin resistance
Environ Int. 2024 Apr 10;186:108626. doi: 10.1016/j.envint.2024.108626. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe relationship of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and insulin resistance remains inclusive. Our study aimed to investigate this association in the project of Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China-PAR). Specifically, we examined the associations between long-term PM2.5 exposure and three surrogate indicators of insulin resistance: the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), TyG with waist circumference (TyG-WC) and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR). Additionally, we e...

An outbreak of hepatitis E virus genotype 4d caused by consuming undercooked pig liver in a nursing home in Zhejiang Province, China
Int J Food Microbiol. 2024 Mar 25;417:110682. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110682. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHepatitis E infection is typically caused by contaminated water or food. In July and August 2022, an outbreak of hepatitis E was reported in a nursing home in Zhejiang Province, China. Local authorities and workers took immediate actions to confirm the outbreak, investigated the sources of infection and routes of transmission, took measures to terminate the outbreak, and summarized the lessons learned. An epidemiological investigation was conducted on all individuals in the nursing home, including demographic...

FirstStep2Health: A cluster randomised trial to promote healthy behaviours and prevent obesity amongst low ‐income preschoolers
ConclusionsEven with some potential limitations (small sample size, measurement concerns and confounding with Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic), the study's results support the preliminary efficacy of the FirstStep2Health intervention in preventing obesity amongst low-income racially diverse preschoolers.
