Association of Habitual Green Tea Consumption with Sarcopenia Assessed Using SARC-F in Community-Dwelling Japanese Older People: A Cross-Sectional Study
In this study of 364 participants (154 men and 210 women), the prevalence of sarcopenia risk was 9.3%. The multivariable-adjusted OR [95% CI] of green tea consumption for ≥1 cup/d compared with that of <1 cup/wk of sarcopenia was 0.312 [0.129-0.752]. Higher habitual green tea consumption was inversely associated with sarcopenia among Japanese older adults. Further longitudinal studies are required to confirm these findings.PMID:38684381 | DOI:10.3177/jnsv.70.117 (Source: Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology)

Gut microbiome and metabolomic profiles reveal the antiatherosclerotic effect of indole-3-carbinol in high-choline-fed ApoE < sup > -/- < /sup > mice
CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate for the first time that I3C ameliorates AS progression through remodeling of the gut microbiome and metabolomics, which paves the way for the possible therapeutic use of this vegetable-derived natural compound and may reduce the clinical severity of AS-related cardiovascular diseases.PMID:38678950 | DOI:10.1016/j.phymed.2024.155621 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Parent Feeding Practices in Infants and Toddlers Referred to a Hospital-Based Feeding Program in the United States
Appetite. 2024 Apr 26:107375. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107375. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile considerable research exists on parent feeding practices for infants and toddlers, past research has not focused on children with feeding problems. The goal of this study was to identify parent feeding practices in a sample of infants (n = 178) and toddlers (n = 221) referred to a hospital-based feeding clinic and then examine how these parent feeding practices were correlated with specific feeding problems. Parents completed surveys to report child demographics, feeding problems, and use of 54 feeding practices. Forty-eight...

Prevalence and determinants of behavioral risk factors for noncommunicable diseases among students aged 13-19 years in Turkey
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of clustering of modifiable risk factors for NCDs was high among students aged 13-19 years in Turkey, and there is a need to mount effective interventions. Risk factors for these diseases are often preventable: Appropriate health interventions before, during, and after pregnancy as well as throughout childhood and adolescence can significantly reduce their prevalence.PMID:38679546 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2024.01.009 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

More than the worksite cafeteria: the workplace food environment of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Netherlands
CONCLUSIONS: In SMEs, an overall comprehensive picture of the food environment points to its limited active encouragement of healthy food choices, particularly so in small SMEs without a worksite cafeteria. Company characteristics strongly influence SME food environments and should be considered when developing interventions improving SME worksite food environments.PMID:38679460 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980024000946 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

A systematic review on garbage enzymes and their applications in environmental processes
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2024 Apr 27;277:116369. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2024.116369. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnderstanding the new insight on conversion of organic waste into value-added products can improve the environmental activities driven by microorganisms and return the nutrients to environment and earth. Here, we comprehensively review the available knowledge on application of garbage enzyme (GE) for different environmental activities including waste activated sludge, composting process, landfill leachate treatment, soil remediation and wastewater treatment with special focus on their efficiency. To identify pee...

Antitumor Effect and Gut Microbiota Modulation by Quercetin, Luteolin, and Xanthohumol in a Rat Model for Colorectal Cancer Prevention
In this study, we have tested the flavonoids quercetin, luteolin, and xanthohumol as potential antitumor agents in an animal model of colorectal cancer induced by azoxymethane and dodecyl sodium sulphate. Forty rats were divided into four cohorts: Cohort 1 (control cohort), Cohort 2 (quercetin cohort), Cohort 3 (luteolin cohort), and Cohort 4 (xanthohumol cohort). These flavonoids were administered intraperitoneally to evaluate their antitumor potential as pharmaceutical agents. At the end of the experiment, after euthanasia, different physical parameters and the intestinal microbiota populations were analyzed. Luteolin wa...

Antimicrobial Efficacy of a Vegetable Oil Plasticizer in PVC Matrices
Polymers (Basel). 2024 Apr 10;16(8):1046. doi: 10.3390/polym16081046.ABSTRACTThe growing prevalence of bacterial and viral infections, highlighted by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, urgently calls for new antimicrobial strategies. To this end, we have synthesized and characterized a novel fatty acid epoxy-ester plasticizer for polymers, named GDE. GDE is not only sustainable and user-friendly but also demonstrates superior plasticizing properties, while its epoxy components improve the heat stability of PVC-based matrices. A key feature of GDE is its ability to confer antimicrobial properties to surfaces. Indeed, upon contac...

Examination of eating competence in a geo-diverse sample with metabolic syndrome
Appetite. 2024 Apr 25:107373. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107373. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEating competence (EatC) is an intra-individual approach to eating attitudes and behaviors associated with greater well-being. EatC research has not included persons with confirmed metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, EatC of persons with MetS was explored to identify unique associations and inform implementation of MetS lifestyle interventions using baseline data from a multisite, randomized trial of a 2-year lifestyle intervention with MetS. EatC, measured with the Satter Eating Competence Inventory 2.0 (ecSI 2.0™), was exami...

Environmental sustainability of diets among children and adolescents in the German DONALD cohort study: Age and time trends, and nutrient adequacy
CONCLUSION: Our findings underscore both the further need but also the capacity for change toward more environmentally sustainable diets. Yet, the trade-off between environmental sustainability and nutrient adequacy in diets of children and adolescents requires specific attention to dietary composition.PMID:38677519 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.04.026 (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
