Association of dietary patterns with sarcopenia in adults aged 50 years and older
ConclusionA high adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern, characterized by increased consumption of legumes, cereals, fruits, vegetables, and limited amounts of meat, fish, and eggs, is positively associated with handgrip strength and appendicular skeletal muscle mass. The highest adherence to this dietary model is associated with the lowest odds of low muscle strength and sarcopenia. Despite the changes brought about by urbanization in southern Italy compared to the past, our findings continue to affirm the superior benefits of the Mediterranean diet in postponing the onset of frailty among older adults when compar...

A Review of the Prospective Effects of Spacing and Varieties on Onion Yield and Yield Components ( < em > Allium cepa < /em > L.) in Ethiopia
ScientificWorldJournal. 2024 Mar 22;2024:2795747. doi: 10.1155/2024/2795747. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTOnion (Allium cepa L.) is the most important commercial vegetable crop widely grown throughout the world. It is also an important bulb crop in Ethiopia. However, its production and productivity are restricted by different factors, including biotic and abiotic stresses. This review investigates the potential impacts of spacing and varieties on onion yield and yield components in Ethiopia. Countries around the world are producing onion for its nutritional value, medicinal properties, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates. In...

Neighborhood-level Social Determinants of Health and Cardioprotective Behaviors among Church Members in New Orleans, Louisiana
CONCLUSIONS: In this predominantly Black, church-based population, neighborhood-level SDoH including the availability of fruits and vegetables, walkability or conduciveness to exercise, and social cohesion were associated with cardioprotective behaviors. Findings reiterate the need to address adverse neighborhood-level SDoH in the design and implementation of health interventions.PMID:38556001 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2024.03.019 (Source: The American Journal of the Medical Sciences)

RUTIN, a widely consumed flavonoid, that commonly induces hormetic effects
Food Chem Toxicol. 2024 Mar 29:114626. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2024.114626. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRutin is a flavonoid present in numerous fruits and vegetables and therefore widely consumed by humans. It is also a popular dietary supplement of 250-500 mg/day. There is considerable consumer interest in rutin due to numerous reports in the biomedical literature of its multi-system chemo-preventive properties. The present paper provides the first assessment of rutin-induced hormetic concentration/dose responses, their quantitative features and mechanistic basis, along with their biological, biomedical, clinical, and publi...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1561: Antioxidant Activity of Humulus lupulus Phenolic Hop Extracts in Creating a New P & acirc;t & eacute;: An Element Affecting Fat Stability and Microbiological Quality during Storage
This study demonstrated that the extraction efficiency varied among hop cone varieties, with the highest efficiency observed for the Lubelski variety and the lowest for the Magnum variety. The phenolic compound content was higher in the Magnum cones (2.74 ± 0.11 mg/g dry matter) compared to the Lubelska cones (2.27 ± 0.05 mg/g of product). Additionally, the DPPH radical scavenging activity was greater in the extract from the Magnum cones (4.21 ± 0.09 mg TE/g d.w.) than in the extract from the Lublelski cones (3.87 ± 0.05 mg TE/ g d.w.). Similarly, the extracts fro...
