Academic performance of students in an accelerated medical pathway
This study examines the Fully Integrated Readiness for Service Training (FIRST) program, a three-year accelerated pathway, to assess its impact on students' academic performance preparedness for residency. In this observational study, we compared the academic outcomes of FIRST program students to traditional four-year curriculum students from 2018 to 2023. We analyzed multiple metrics, including exam performance (United States Medical Licensing Examination Step scores, shelf exam scores, and pre-clinical course scores) and clinical performance scores during the application and individualization phases. Analysis of Variance...

A gated recurrent unit model based on ultrasound images of dynamic tongue movement for determining the severity of obstructive sleep apnea
This study endeavors to bridge this gap by capturing US images of DTM dynamics during wakefulness, encompassing transitions from normal breathing (NB) to the performance of the Müller maneuver (MM) in a cohort of 53 patients. Leveraging the modified optical flow method (MOFM), the trajectories of patients' DTM were tracked, facililtating the extraction of 27 parameters vital for model training. These parameters encompassed nine-point lateral movement, nine-point axial movement, and nine-point total displacement of the tongue, resulting in a dataset of 186,030 samples. The gated recurrent unit (GRU) method, renowned for it...

Groundwater salinization risk assessment using combined artificial intelligence models
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 28. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33469-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAssessing the risk of groundwater contamination is of crucial importance for the management of water resources, particularly in arid regions such as Menzel Habib (south-eastern Tunisia). The aim of this research is to create and validate artificial intelligence models based on the original DRASTIC vulnerability methodology to explain groundwater salinization risk (GSR). To this end, several algorithms, such as artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector regression (SVR), and multiple linear regression (MLR), were ap...

Commentary on “Predictive Model of CK7 Expression in Patients With Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma by Combined Multimodal Ultrasound Diagnostic Techniques”
Sir, we read Zhu's paper [1] with great interest. A training group (103 cases) and a testing group (54 cases) were included in this study, this study aimed to develop and validate a predictive model for cytokeratin 7 (CK7) expression in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients by combining multimodal ultrasound diagnostic techniques. Their univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that B-mode ultrasound (US), and color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) observations were not correlated with CK7 expression and could not predict it. Maternity healthcare professionals experiences of supporting women in decision-making for labour and birth: a qualitative study
Conclusions We found that MHCPs are committed to SDM but need better support to deliver it. Structured processes including Core Information Sets, communication skills training and decision support aids may help to consistently deliver SDM in maternity care. (Source: BMJ Open)

Learning motivation and self-assessment in health economics: a survey on overconfidence in healthcare providers
Discussion We could show the presence of overconfidence in health economics, which is consistent with studies in healthcare and the economy. The subjective perception of some medical educators, being role models to students and having a superior ‘attitude’ (eg, morality) concerning the economy may foster prejudice against economists as students might believe them. It also may aggravate moral distress and disrupts interactions between healthcare providers managers and leaders. Considering the study’s limitations, lifelong interprofessional and reflective training and train-the-trainer programmes may be man...

Prevalence and predictors of workplace sexual harassment of nurses in the Central Region of Ghana: a cross-sectional online survey
Conclusions The prevalence of workplace sexual harassment against nurses in the Central Region of Ghana is high and may compromise quality healthcare delivery in the region. Therefore, managers of healthcare facilities and the Ghana Health Service need to institute antisexual harassment interventions, including education, training and policy, with a focus on females in general, but especially those who are not married, less experienced and those working in public health facilities. Effects of Inpatient Occupational Rehabilitation vs. Outpatient Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on Sick Leave and Cost of Lost Production: 7-Year Follow-Up of a Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionsI-MORE outperformed O-ACT in reducing sickness absence and production loss costs during seven years of follow-up, but due to a limited sample size the results were unprecise. Considering the potential for substantial societal cost savings from reduced sick leave, there is a need for larger, long-term studies to evaluate return-to-work interventions. Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2818: The Classification of VOCs Based on Sensor Images Using a Lightweight Neural Network for Lung Cancer Diagnosis
he Zhao The application of artificial intelligence to point-of-care testing (POCT) disease detection has become a hot research field, in which breath detection, which detects the patient’s exhaled VOCs, combined with sensor arrays of convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms as a new lung cancer detection is attracting more researchers’ attention. However, the low accuracy, high-complexity computation and large number of parameters make the CNN algorithms difficult to transplant to the embedded system of POCT devices. A lightweight neural network (LTNet) in this work is proposed to deal ...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 561: Identifying and Responding to Lead in Drinking Water in a University Setting
In conclusion, systematic testing of all the fixtures across campus was required to identify localized contamination, and each entity in the cross-campus network undertook necessary roles to generate a successful testing campaign. UNC-CH established preventative measures to test drinking water fixtures every three years, which provide a framework for other higher education institutions in responding to lead contamination. IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 562: Undesirable Levels of Practice Behaviours and Associated Knowledge amongst Community Health Workers in Rural South India Responsible for Type 2 Diabetes Screening and Management
Conclusion: This study highlights widespread deficiencies (97% CHWs) in diabetes management practices and knowledge (95% CHWs). To overcome these deficiencies, a thorough needs assessments is vital for effective CHW training. Training of CHWs should not only identify prior knowledge and/or behaviour but also their interrelationship to help create a robust and flexible set of practice behaviours. Induction of Trained Immunity using β-glucan and its protective responses in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus
Dev Comp Immunol. 2024 Apr 25:105188. doi: 10.1016/j.dci.2024.105188. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmerging and re-emerging diseases in fish cause drastic economic losses in the aquaculture sector. To combat the impact of disease outbreaks and prevent the emergence of infections in culture systems, understanding the advanced strategies for protecting fish against infections is inevitable in fish health research. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the induction of trained immunity and its protective efficacy against Streptococcus agalactiae in tilapia. For this, Nile tilapia and the primary head kidney macropha...

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology of 47 carbapenem resistant P.aeruginosa (CRPA) isolates derived from various clinical samples from the Central Laboratory Bacteriology Unit of Kocaeli University Research and Training Hospital between October 2021 and March 2023. The rates of resistance to the antibiotics, some carbapenemase and virulence genes, conjugative resistance plasmids, integron gene cassette contents and the clonal similarity of the isolates were investigated and then epidemiologically evaluated. In the study, identification of the bacterial isolates and their susceptibility to ...
