Inverse Design of Photonic Surfaces via High throughput Femtosecond Laser Processing and Tandem Neural Networks
Adv Sci (Weinh). 2024 Apr 29:e2401951. doi: 10.1002/advs.202401951. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis work demonstrates a method to design photonic surfaces by combining femtosecond laser processing with the inverse design capabilities of tandem neural networks that directly link laser fabrication parameters to their resulting textured substrate optical properties. High throughput fabrication and characterization platforms are developed that generate a dataset comprising 35280 unique microtextured surfaces on stainless steel with corresponding measured spectral emissivities. The trained model utilizes the nonlinear one-to...

Integrating Perspectives on Family Caregiving After Critical Illness: A Qualitative Content Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Caregivers have instrumental, self-care, and mental health needs after critical illness. Adapting hands-on and skills training interventions to the post-ICU setting, while tailoring interventions to caregivers' health-related social context, may improve caregiver outcomes.PMID:38688852 | DOI:10.4037/ajcc2024309 (Source: American Journal of Critical Care)

Artificial Intelligence and Occupational Health and Safety, Benefits and Drawbacks
Med Lav. 2024 Apr 24;115(2):e2024014. doi: 10.23749/mdl.v115i2.15835.ABSTRACTThis paper discusses the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on occupational health and safety. Although the integration of AI into the field of occupational health and safety is still in its early stages, it has numerous applications in the workplace. Some of these applications offer numerous benefits for the health and safety of workers, such as continuous monitoring of workers' health and safety and the workplace environment through wearable devices and sensors. However, AI might have negative impacts in the workplace, such as ethical worrie...

Exposure Assessment and Monitoring of Antiblastic Drugs Preparation in Health Care Settings: A Systematic Review
Med Lav. 2024 Apr 24;115(2):e2024012. doi: 10.23749/mdl.v115i2.15609.ABSTRACTSeveral antiblastic drugs (ADs) are classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, and/or toxic for reproduction. Despite established guidelines and safe handling technologies, ADs contamination of the work environments could occur in healthcare settings, leading to potential exposure of healthcare staff. This systematic review aims to investigate the main techniques and practices for assessing ADs occupational exposure in healthcare settings. The reviewed studies unveil that workplace contamination by ADs appears to be a still-topical problem in healthca...

Efficacy of a Single Day Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Training Course for Critical Care Air Transport Team Eligible Personnel
CONCLUSIONS: An abbreviated 1-day lecture and hands-on task-trainer-based ECMO course resulted in a high rate of successful skill demonstration and improvement of physicians' and nurses' knowledge assessments and confidence levels, similar to our previous live-tissue training program. When compared to our previous studies, the addition of telemedicine and patient transportation to this study did not affect the duration or performance of procedures.PMID:38687647 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usae138 (Source: Military Medicine)

Biphasic Kinetics of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 in Response to Military Field Training in Brazilian Air Force Recruits
CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that IGF-I and IGFBP-3 levels respond quickly to the stimuli caused by military training, especially after specific field training. However, the same markers quickly return to their basal values after this type of training finishes, simply by following the daily routine of the battalion in the control weeks, with no specific intervention being necessary.PMID:38687564 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usae097 (Source: Military Medicine)

Impact of Rank, Provider Specialty, and Unit Sustainment Training Frequency on Military Critical Care Air Transport Team Readiness
CONCLUSION: Our main result is that simple readily available metrics available to unit commanders can identify those members at risk for poor performance at CCAT Advanced readiness training; these include RNs with rank Major or above, RTs with rank Senior Airman, and RTs who engage in unit sustainment training less often than monthly. Finally, MD specialties which are nontraditional for CCAT have significantly lower CCAT Advanced passing rates, reserve/guard students did not outperform active duty students, there was no difference in the performance between different RN specialties, and for MD and RN students' previous dep...

Specificity of early motor unit adaptations with resistive exercise training
J Physiol. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1113/JP282560. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAfter exposure of the human body to resistive exercise, the force-generation capacity of the trained muscles increases significantly. Despite decades of research, the neural and muscular stimuli that initiate these changes in muscle force are not yet fully understood. The study of these adaptations is further complicated by the fact that the changes may be partly specific to the training task. For example, short-term strength training does not always influence the neural drive to muscles during the early phase (<100 ms) of force development in ...
