Induction of Trained Immunity using β-glucan and its protective responses in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus
Dev Comp Immunol. 2024 Apr 25:105188. doi: 10.1016/j.dci.2024.105188. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmerging and re-emerging diseases in fish cause drastic economic losses in the aquaculture sector. To combat the impact of disease outbreaks and prevent the emergence of infections in culture systems, understanding the advanced strategies for protecting fish against infections is inevitable in fish health research. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the induction of trained immunity and its protective efficacy against Streptococcus agalactiae in tilapia. For this, Nile tilapia and the primary head kidney macropha...

Molecular Analysis of Antibiotic Resistance in CarbapenemResistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates Isolated from Clinical Samples
In this study, it was aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology of 47 carbapenem resistant P.aeruginosa (CRPA) isolates derived from various clinical samples from the Central Laboratory Bacteriology Unit of Kocaeli University Research and Training Hospital between October 2021 and March 2023. The rates of resistance to the antibiotics, some carbapenemase and virulence genes, conjugative resistance plasmids, integron gene cassette contents and the clonal similarity of the isolates were investigated and then epidemiologically evaluated. In the study, identification of the bacterial isolates and their susceptibility to ...

Attitudes and beliefs regarding Pain Medicine: results of a national palliative physician survey
CONCLUSION: This study shows that Palliative Care physicians have highly positive attitudes toward Pain Medicine specialists, but referrals remain low. Facilitating professional collaboration via joint educational/clinical sessions is one possible solution to drive ongoing interprofessional care in patients with complex pain.PMID:38677489 | DOI:10.1016/j.jpainsymman.2024.04.015 (Source: Pain Physician)

How does maternal anemia affect the levels of umbilical cord brain-derived neurotrophic factor?
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the BDNF value of the babies of healthy individuals is higher than that of anemic individuals. Our study showed that the amount of BDNF in the umbilical cord blood was significantly affected by maternal iron deficiency anemia.PMID:38677095 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2024.04.016 (Source: Reproductive Biology)

Assessment of chromite ore wastes for methylene blue adsorption: Isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic studies, ANN, and statistical physics modeling
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 25:142098. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142098. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis research investigates the adsorption potential of chrysotile and lizardite, two minerals derived from chromite ore wastes, for the uptake of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from waste streams. The characterization of these minerals involves XRD, XRF, FTIR, and SEM. Results confirm the dominance of polymorphic magnesium silicate minerals, specifically chrysotile and lizardite, in the samples. The FTIR spectra reveal characteristic vibration bands confirming the presence of these minerals. The SEM analysis depicts irregular su...

Effects of Adjuvant Exercise and Nutrition Therapy on Muscle Fibre Biomechanics in Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients
Cancers (Basel). 2024 Apr 22;16(8):1608. doi: 10.3390/cancers16081608.ABSTRACTPatients with aggressive cancer, e.g., gastrointestinal cancer, are prone (≥50% chance) to developing cancer cachexia (CC). Little is known about the effects of CC on the biomechanical function of muscle. A promising prevention strategy was found in the form of a multi-modal therapy combining mild resistance exercise (e.g., whole-body electro-myostimulation, WB-EMS) and a protein-rich diet. In a previous study of ours, this was effective in counteracting the loss of muscle mass, yet a systematic and comprehensive assessment of active and passiv...

GSE265942 Site saturation mutagenesis of 500 human protein domains
Contributors : Beltran Antoni ; Lehner BenSeries Type : OtherOrganism : Saccharomyces cerevisiaeMissense variants that change the amino acid sequences of proteins cause one third of human genetic diseases. Tens of millions of missense variants exist in the current human population, with the vast majority having unknown functional consequences. Here we present the first large-scale experimental analysis of human missense variants. Using DNA synthesis and cellular selection experiments we quantify the impact of>500,000 variants on the abundance of>500 human protein domains. This dataset, Domainome 1.0, reveals that>60% of ...

One model to use them all: training a segmentation model with complementary datasets
ConclusionBy leveraging multiple datasets and applying mutual exclusion constraints, we developed a method that improves surgical scene segmentation performance without the need for fully annotated datasets. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of training a model on multiple complementary datasets. This paves the way for future work further alleviating the need for one specialized large, fully segmented dataset but instead the use of already existing datasets.
