Ecology of emergency care in lower-tier healthcare providers in Ghana: an empirical data-driven Bayesian network analytical approach
This study aimed to assess the emergency care preparedness and readiness of primary healthcare providers using a robust evaluation approach. A multicentre retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on  460 healthcare facilities  using the standardised Health Facilities Emergency Preparedness Assessment Tool (HeFEPAT). Data were analysed via Bayesian Belief network. Emergency preparedness was associated with facility location, type, ownership, and in-charge personnel. Over 70% of facilities lacked specialised emergency/critical care personnel. Although 65% of in-charges reported protocol knowledge, only 7.8% c...

Prediction of half-marathon performance of male recreational marathon runners using nomogram
ConclusionsThis study developed a nomogram with good potential to predict the half-marathon performance of recreational runners. Our results suggest that longer monthly running distance, faster mean training pace and better sleep quality notably contribute to better half-marathon performance. IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 570: Reducing Loneliness through the Power of Practicing Together: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Online Dyadic Socio-Emotional vs. Mindfulness-Based Training
le Singer Loneliness has become a pressing topic, especially among young adults and during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a randomized controlled trial with 253 healthy adults, we evaluated the differential efficacy of two 10-week app-delivered mental training programs: one based on classic mindfulness and one on an innovative partner-based socio-emotional practice (Affect Dyad). We show that the partner-based training resulted in greater reductions in loneliness than the mindfulness-based training. This effect was shown on three measures of loneliness: general loneliness assessed with the 20-item UCLA Loneliness Scale, ...

UNNT: A novel Utility for comparing Neural Net and Tree-based models
by Vineeth Gutta, Satish Ranganathan Ganakammal, Sara Jones, Matthew Beyers, Sunita Chandrasekaran The use of deep learning (DL) is steadily gaining traction in scientific challenges such as cancer research. Advances in enhanced data generation, machine learning algorithms, and compute infrastructure have led to an acceleration in the use of deep learning in various domains of cancer research such as drug response problems. In our study, we explored tree-based models to improve the accuracy of a single drug response model and demonstrate that tree-based models such as XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) have advantages ov...

Recurrent neural networks that learn multi-step visual routines with reinforcement learning
We report that networks learn elemental operations, such as contour grouping and visual search, and execute sequences of operat ions, solely based on the characteristics of the visual stimuli and the reward structure of a task. After training was completed, the activity of the units of the neural network elicited by behaviorally relevant image items was stronger than that elicited by irrelevant ones, just as has been observe d in the visual cortex of monkeys solving the same tasks. Relevant information that needed to be exchanged between subroutines was maintained as a focus of enhanced activity and passed on to the subseq...

Outcomes Following Localized Prostate Cancer Treatment
To the Editor In a recent article that compared adverse outcomes of localized prostate cancer treatment modalities, persistent urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy was highlighted as a significant difference compared with other therapeutic options. However, the authors overlooked the existence of safe and effective curative options for postprostatectomy incontinence management. When pelvic floor muscle training after prostatic surgery is ineffective for postprostatectomy incontinence, various surgical options such as the artificial urinary sphincter or minimally invasive alternatives such as periurethral balloo...

Knowledge and competences in hematological malignancies amongst radiation oncology residents in Germany —results from a national survey
ConclusionThis survey highlights the diversity of resident education regarding hematological malignancies in German radiation oncology programs. Knowledge gaps exist in key areas, including pediatric cases and specialized techniques. Competence-based education, interactive teaching formats, and rotations to specialized centers are potential strategies to address these gaps. The study contributes to the understanding of the federal educational landscape, underscoring the need for standardized and comprehensive training to ensure optimal patient care in hematological malignancies within the context of radiation oncology. Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2836: GBDT Method Integrating Feature-Enhancement and Active-Learning Strategies—Sea Ice Thickness Inversion in Beaufort Sea Sensors doi: 10.3390/s24092836 Authors: Han Huang Ma Zheng Wang Zhang Sea ice, as an important component of the Earth’s ecosystem, has a profound impact on global climate and human activities due to its thickness. Therefore, the inversion of sea ice thickness has important research significance. Due to environmental and equipment-related limitations, the number of samples available for remote sensing inversion is currently insuff...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2835: The Impact of Various Cockpit Display Interfaces on Novice Pilots & rsquo; Mental Workload and Situational Awareness: A Comparative Study
This study examines the impact of two different cockpit display interfaces (CDIs), the Steam Gauge panel and the G1000 Glass panel, on novice pilots’ MWL and situational awareness (SA) in a flight simulator-based setting. A combination of objective (EEG and HRV) and subjective (NASA-TLX) assessments is used to assess novice pilots’ cognitive states during this study. Our results indicate that the gauge design of the CDI affects novice pilots’ SA and MWL, with the G1000 Glass panel being more effective in reducing the MWL and improving SA compared with the Steam Gauge panel. The res...

Impact of immersive realities and metaverse in the university training for health professions and medicine: a systematic review of preliminary evidence
ConclusionThe review provides that Metaverse results still need to be implemented; VR was a valid tool to support the improvement of AP and LS of students; VR turns out to be more widespread than other XRs. There are several discrepancies in the studies that confirm the need to promote the understanding of VR simulation ’s effects on the acquisition of skills. (Source: Journal of Public Health)

The Twelve-Step Path? Mindfulness and Ethics in Buddhist Addiction Recovery Literature
This article analyzes the paths laid out by these Buddhist recovery manuals and compares them to classical Buddhist and Twelve-Step paths. This comparison demonstrates that Buddhist recovery manuals creatively draw on classical Buddhism and Twelve-Step but also differ from them in important ways as they re-imagine a path from addiction to recovery. This article documents the growing genre of Buddhist recovery manuals, thus expanding our understanding of Anglophone Buddhism and providing substance abuse professionals with a knowledge of the Buddhist recovery landscape. The article also argues that Buddhist recovery manuals ...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2823: Differentiating Epileptic and Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures Using Machine Learning Analysis of EEG Plot Images
fi Haneef The treatment of epilepsy, the second most common chronic neurological disorder, is often complicated by the failure of patients to respond to medication. Treatment failure with anti-seizure medications is often due to the presence of non-epileptic seizures. Distinguishing non-epileptic from epileptic seizures requires an expensive and time-consuming analysis of electroencephalograms (EEGs) recorded in an epilepsy monitoring unit. Machine learning algorithms have been used to detect seizures from EEG, typically using EEG waveform analysis. We employed an alternative approach, using a convolutional neural netw...
