Extending neutron autoradiography technique for boron concentration measurements in hard tissues.
Abstract The neutron autoradiography technique using polycarbonate nuclear track detectors (NTD) has been extended to quantify the boron concentration in hard tissues, an application of special interest in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). Chemical and mechanical processing methods to prepare thin tissue sections as required by this technique have been explored. Four different decalcification methods governed by slow and fast kinetics were tested in boron-loaded bones. Due to the significant loss of the boron content, this technique was discarded. On the contrary, mechanical manipulation to obtain bone...

Intrathyroidal thymic tissue in children: Avoiding unnecessary surgery
Intrathyroidal thymic tissue may be misinterpreted as a thyroid lesion in children, leading to invasive tests or resection. We sought to describe the characteristic imaging features of these lesions and to evaluate the safety of non-operative management. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

Evaporation process in histological tissue sections for neutron autoradiography.
Abstract The analysis of the distribution and density of nuclear tracks forming an autoradiography in a nuclear track detector (NTD) allows the determination of 10B atoms concentration and location in tissue samples from Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) protocols. This knowledge is of great importance for BNCT dosimetry and treatment planning. Tissue sections studied with this technique are obtained by cryosectioning frozen tissue specimens. After the slicing procedure, the tissue section is put on the NTD and the sample starts drying. The thickness varies from its original value allowing more particle...

Leptospira seroprevalence in animals in the Caribbean region: a systematic review.
Abstract This systematic review summarises the data published on the Leptospira seroprevalence, serovar diversity and distribution among animal species in the Caribbean region. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, and checklist, relevant articles were identified and data were extracted and recorded. The review provided Leptospira seroprevalence data from 16 Caribbean islands (Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, Puerto Rico, Saint Croix, St. Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica, Antigua, Carriacou, Dominica, Guadalupe, Martinique, Monserrat, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, ...

Illness Severity Predicts Death and Brain Injury in Asphyxiated Newborns Treated with Hypothermia
Conclusion In asphyxiated newborns treated with hypothermia, not only the initial asphyxial event but also the illness severity during the first days of life was a significant predictor of death or brain injury. Letter to the Editor regarding Hackl et  al: “Rare implant-specific complications of the MoPyC radial head prosthesis”
It was with great interest that we read the article “Rare implant-specific complications of the MoPyC radial head prosthesis” by Hackl et al.6 The MoPyC implant (Tornier [Bioprofile], Montbonnot-Saint-Martin, France) is a monopolar, press-fit radial head prosthesis that obtains fixation via auto-expansion of its stem; this implant design is not c urrently available for use in the United States. Although functional outcomes are promising, the description and analysis of the complications of MoPyC implants in the literature are scarce. (Source: Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery)

Using "isotopic spike" from tropical storm to understand water exchange on large scale: case study of Hurricane Rafael in the Lesser Antilles archipelago, October 2012.
CONCLUSIONS: The "isotopic spikes" generated by tropical storms, are generally used to track back past storm events, as recorded in trees and stalagmites. Here, the propagation of isotopic spike is followed to improve the understanding of the freshwater circulation and the water dynamic within coastal ecosystems influenced by seawater. Tracking the career development of scientists in low- and middle-income countries trained through TDR ’s research capacity strengthening programmes: Learning from monitoring and impact evaluation
by B éatrice Halpaap, Mahnaz Vahedi, Edith Certain, Tini Alvarado, Caroline Saint Martin, Corinne Merle, Michael Mihut, Pascal Launois The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) co-sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, World Bank and WHO has been supporting research capacity strengthening in low- and middle-income countries for over 40 years. In order to assess and continuously optimize its capacity strengthe ning approaches, an evaluation of the influence of TDR training grants on research career development was undertaken. The assessment was part of a larger evaluation conducted by the European Sci...

Defining the phenotypic spectrum of SLC6A1 mutations
We describe 7 truncating and 18 missense variants, including 4 recurrent variants (Gly232Val, Ala288Val, Val342Met, and Gly362Arg). SignificanceMost patients carrying pathogenic SLC6A1 variants have an MAE phenotype with language delay and mild/moderate ID before epilepsy onset. However, ID alone or associated with focal epilepsy can also be observed. (Source: Epilepsia)

Brain Temperature Is Increased During the First Days of Life in Asphyxiated Newborns: Developing Brain Injury Despite Hypothermia Treatment [PEDIATRICS]
CONCLUSIONS: Therapeutic hypothermia using current guidelines decreased the brain temperature of neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy during the first days of life but did not prevent an early increase of brain temperature in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy who developed brain injury despite this treatment. Long-lasting active lifestyle and successful cognitive aging in a healthy elderly population: The PROOF cohort.
CONCLUSION: In the healthy elderly, high cognitive ability predicts both cognitive ability and social involvement in later life. Cognitive decline by only one level may also extend the time to reach impairment, underlining the importance of the so-called cognitive reserve. Diabetes, Associated Clinical Spectrum, Long-term Prognosis, and Genotype/Phenotype Correlations in 201 Adult Patients With Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor 1B (HNF1B) Molecular Defects
CONCLUSIONS In patients with HNF1B syndrome, diabetes complications, cardiovascular risk factors, CKD3–4, and ESRD are highly prevalent. At diabetes diagnosis, the presence of morphological and/or functional kidney disease may help etiological diagnosis. Genotype/phenotype correlations may have implications for the care and the prognosis of these patients. (Source: Diabetes Care)
