Precision Medicine in the Era of Genetic Testing: Microsatellite Instability Evolved
Clin Colon Rectal Surg. 2023 Jul 25;37(3):157-171. doi: 10.1055/s-0043-1770385. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTThe recognized importance of microsatellite instability (MSI) in cancer has evolved considerably in the past 30 years. From its beginnings as a molecular predictor for Lynch syndrome, MSI first transitioned to a universal screening test in all colorectal and endometrial cancers, substantially increasing the identification of patients with Lynch syndrome among cancer patients. More recently, MSI has been shown to be a powerful biomarker of response to immune checkpoint blockade therapy across a diversity of tumor typ...

Comparison of the safety and efficacy of robotic natural orifice specimen extraction surgery and conventional robotic colorectal cancer resection: a propensity score matching study
AbstractRobotic resection is widely used to treat colorectal cancer. Although the novel natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES) results in less trauma, its safety and effectiveness are relatively unknown. In the present study, we used propensity score matching to compare the effectiveness and safety of NOSES and robotic resection for treating colorectal cancer. Present retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent robotic colon and rectal cancer surgery between January 2016 and December 2019 at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. The ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1496: Influence of Certification Program on Treatment Quality and Survival for Rectal Cancer Patients in Germany: Results of 13 Certified Centers in Collaboration with AN Institute
Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate an improvement in terms of the treatment quality and outcomes in certified CrCCs, which is enforced by certification-specific aspects such as a more differentiated surgical approach, a lower rate of certain postoperative complications, and a multidisciplinary approach. Further prospective clinical trials are necessary to investigate the influence of certification in the treatment of CRC patients. (Source: Cancers)

Preoperative risk factors and cumulative incidence of temporary ileostomy non-closure after sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer: a meta-analysis
Temporary ileostomy (TI) has proven effective in reducing the severity of anastomotic leakage after rectal cancer surgery; however, some ileostomies fail to reverse over time, leading to conversion into a perm... (Source: World Journal of Surgical Oncology)

LncRNAs: Emerging biomarkers and therapeutic targets in rectal cancer
Pathol Res Pract. 2024 Apr 4;257:155294. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2024.155294. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccording to findings, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have an important function in the onset and growth of various cancers, including rectal cancer (RC). RC offers unique issues in terms of diagnosis, treatment, and results, needing a full understanding of the cellular mechanisms that cause it to develop. This thorough study digs into the various functions that lncRNAs perform in RC, giving views into their multiple roles as well as possible therapeutic consequences. The function of lncRNAs in RC cell proliferation, apop...

Do beta-blockers reduce negative intrusive thoughts and anxiety in cancer survivors? - An emulated trial
CONCLUSIONS: The emulated trials demonstrated no evidence of a protective effect of beta-blocker therapy against intrusive thoughts. The Active group had reduced quality of life and elevated anxiety compared to the Control group.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The three cohort studies were registered at isrctn.com/clinicaltrials.gov (ISRCTN06393679, NCT02530593 and NCT01477229).PMID:38605350 | DOI:10.1186/s12885-024-12236-3 (Source: Cancer Control)

Proton beam reirradiation for locally recurrent rectal cancer patients with prior pelvic irradiation
J Radiat Res. 2024 Apr 10:rrae019. doi: 10.1093/jrr/rrae019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of the present study was to report the feasibility of proton beam reirradiation for patients with locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC) with prior pelvic irradiation. The study population included patients who were treated with proton beam therapy (PBT) for LRRC between 2008 and December 2019 in our institution. Those who had a history of distant metastases of LRRC, with or without treatment, before reirradiation, were excluded. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and local control (LC) were estimated usin...

Treatment of rectal anastomotic atresia with transurethral prostate resection instrumentation: A report of three cases
Exp Ther Med. 2024 Mar 15;27(5):202. doi: 10.3892/etm.2024.12491. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTDixon surgery for rectal cancer can lead to severe intestinal narrowing and blockage that is difficult to treat with open surgery or colonoscopy. The aim of the present study was to develop a minimally invasive approach for treating rectal anastomotic atresia based on three cases that were managed with transurethral prostate resection instrumentation. Preoperative imaging determined the distance from the anastomotic closure to the anal margin, the length of the anastomotic closure and the degree of proximal intestinal dilation fo...

Stroma AReactive Invasion Front Areas (SARIFA): a novel histopathologic biomarker in colorectal cancer patients and its association with the luminal tumour proportion
CONCLUSION: Here, we validated the relationship between SARIFA-status and prognosis in CRC patients and provided first evidence for a potential prognostic relevance in the subgroup of rectal cancer patients. Interestingly, CRCs with different SARIFA-status also showed histological differences measurable at the luminal tumour surface. Further studies to better understand the relationship between high luminal intratumoural stroma content and absence of a stroma reaction at the invasive front (SARIFA-positivity) are warranted and may inform future treatment decisions in CRC patients.PMID:38593584 | DOI:10.1016/j.tranon.2024.1...
