Acute Infectious Purpura Fulminans Complicated by Bacterial Translocation after Rectal Cancer Surgery: A Case Report
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 Apr 17;60(4):644. doi: 10.3390/medicina60040644.ABSTRACTThe patient was a man in his 80s who had undergone laparoscopic anterior resection for rectal cancer. Bowel obstruction occurred on the third postoperative day but improved with a decompression tube by the fifth postoperative day. A high fever (in the 38 °C range) was also observed. Blood culture tests detected two sets of the gram-negative bacilli Klebsiella aerogenes within 24 h of collection. On the seventh postoperative day, the patient subsequently went into septic shock with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). On the eighth pos...

Total Neoadjuvant Therapy for Rectal Cancer
Surg Clin North Am. 2024 Jun;104(3):609-617. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2023.11.010. Epub 2024 Feb 12.ABSTRACTThe treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer has traditionally included sequenced multimodal therapy including radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. The relative contribution of each and the order of treatments have evolved over the years. By the early twenty-first century, there was widespread use of the German Rectal Cancer Trial approach: preoperative chemoradiation, followed by standardized surgery including total mesorectal excision, and finally adjuvant chemotherapy. Recent advances have defined the superiority of...

Retrospective Evaluation of the Efficacy of Total Neoadjuvant Therapy and Chemoradiotherapy Neoadjuvant Treatment in Relation to Surgery in Patients with Rectal Cancer
Conclusions: By using TNT, a higher rate of stage reduction is obtained compared to the neoadjuvant CRT treatment. The post-neoadjuvant-treatment imagistic evaluation fails to accurately evaluate the response. A better response to TNT was observed in young patients.PMID:38674302 | PMC:PMC11052151 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040656 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Precision CT ‑guided marking with India ink and microcoils for laparoscopic resection of a lateral lymph node recurrence of rectal cancer: A case report
Oncol Lett. 2024 Apr 12;27(6):266. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14399. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTAlthough rarely used in laparoscopic surgery, computed tomography (CT)-guided marking is useful for targeting small lesions. The present study describes the performance of laparoscopic resection with preoperative CT-guided marking for lateral lymph node recurrence of rectal cancer. A 48-year-old man underwent laparoscopic low anterior resection with D3 lymph node dissection for rectal cancer (postoperative diagnosis, stage IIIb). Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy was then administered. Solitary lymph node recurrence was observed i...

Unveiling the promising anticancer effect of copper-based compounds: a comprehensive review
J Cancer Res Clin Oncol. 2024 Apr 25;150(4):213. doi: 10.1007/s00432-024-05641-5.ABSTRACTCopper is a necessary micronutrient for maintaining the well-being of the human body. The biological activity of organic ligands, especially their anticancer activity, is often enhanced when they coordinate with copper(I) and (II) ions. Copper and its compounds are capable of inducing tumor cell death through various mechanisms of action, including activation of apoptosis signaling pathways by reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibition of angiogenesis, induction of cuproptosis, and paraptosis. Some of the copper complexes are currently ...
