Interdisciplinary Spanish consensus on a watch-and-wait approach for rectal cancer
AbstractWatch-and-wait has emerged as a new strategy for the management of rectal cancer when a complete clinical response is achieved after neoadjuvant therapy. In an attempt to standardize this new clinical approach, initiated by the Spanish Cooperative Group for the Treatment of Digestive Tumors (TTD), and with the participation of the Spanish Association of Coloproctology (AECP), the Spanish Society of Pathology (SEAP), the Spanish Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (SEED), the Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology (SEOR), and the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM), we present herein a consensus on a watch...

Perioperative and long-term oncological outcomes of robotic versus laparoscopic total mesorectal excision: a retrospective study of 672 patients
This study aimed to assess the long-term oncological results of total mesorectal excision (TME) performed laparoscopically versus robotically in the setting o f rectal cancer. Restrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database. A total of 489 laparoscopic (L-TME) and 183 robotic total mesorectal excisions (R-TME) were carried out by a single surgeon between 2013 and 2023. The groups were compared in terms of perioperative and long-term oncolog ical outcomes. In the R-TME and L-TME groups, male sex predominated (75.4% and 57.3%, respectively), although the robotic group was significantly greater (p = 0.008)....

Misdiagnosis of multiple myeloma as postoperative bone metastasis of rectal cancer: A case report and literature review
Oncol Lett. 2024 Mar 14;27(5):208. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14341. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTMultiple myeloma (MM) and bone metastases are both common malignant tumors of the skeleton that share similar clinical manifestations and radiological features. The development of MM following rectal cancer surgery is relatively rare in clinical practice and is easily misdiagnosed as bone metastasis. The present study reported on a patient with MM and postoperative rectal cancer. A 65-year-old man had been diagnosed with low rectal cancer (poorly differentiated, T3N1M0) 10 years prior and underwent curative treatment at that time. D...

Clinical Outcomes of Ileostomy Closure during versus after Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients with Rectal Cancer
CONCLUSION: Early ileostomy closure can effectively reduce the duration of stoma status, duration of LARS, rectal stenosis, and stoma-related complications while not affecting surgical complications and oncological outcomes. Ileostomy closure should not be delayed because of adjuvant chemotherapy. However, follow-up should be strengthened to increase compliance and integrity with chemotherapy.PMID:38550348 | PMC:PMC10977340 | DOI:10.1155/2024/2410643 (Source: Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology)

An update on total neoadjuvant treatment of adenocarcinoma of the rectum
Bull Cancer. 2024 Mar 28:S0007-4551(24)00084-5. doi: 10.1016/j.bulcan.2024.02.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA major advance has been made in the management of rectal cancer, with the emergence in 2021 of total neoadjuvant treatment. The main publications from the RAPIDO and PRODIGE-23 trials reported a significant improvement in progression-free survival and the pathological complete response rate. The aim of this review is to synthesize recent data on neoadjuvant treatment of rectal cancer, to explain the long-term results of the RAPIDO and PRODIGE-23 trials, and to put them into perspective, considering current adva...
