Determining the timing of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) epidemics: a systematic review, 2016 to 2021; method categorisation and identification of influencing factors
ConclusionMethods and assessment characteristics used to define RSV seasonality are heterogeneous. Our categorisation of methods and proposed framework of factors may assist in choosing RSV seasonality methods and interpretating results.PMID:38304952 | PMC:PMC10835753 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2024.29.5.2300244 (Source: Euro Surveill)

Extramammary Paget ’s disease of the vulva
is a rare dermatologic condition that presents in areas where there are apocrine sweat glands including the vulva, perineum and perianal skin. It presents are erythematous well-demarcated plaques that can become erosive, ulcerated, scaly or eczematous. (Source: European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology)

Untargeted metabolomics yields insight into extramammary Paget ’s disease mechanisms
ConclusionIn conclusion, this study was the first to reveal the metabolome profile of EMPD. Our results demonstrate that IDO1/TDO2-initialized KYN metabolic pathway may play a vital role in the development and progression of EMPD, which may serve as a potential therapeutic target for treating EMPD. Extramammary Paget ’s Disease of the Penis and Scrotum
AbstractExtramammary Paget ’s disease (EMPD) is an adenocarcinoma arising from the skin or skin appendages which is sometimes associated with an underlying malignancy. EMPD is most commonly seen in the vulva, followed by perianal region, and the male genitalia. In most cases, patient presents with eczematous lesion persisti ng for long duration. A 77-year-old gentleman had a history of chronic eczematous lesion over penis and scrotum for the last 10 years. Examination revealed an erythematous plaque like eczematous lesion over the penis and scrotum. Biopsy with IHC of lesion is suggestive of EMPD. Wide local excision of...

Man with swollen arm
Clinical Introduction A previously healthy 39-year-old male presented to the emergency department with intermittent right arm swelling for 1 month, which worsened over 4 days (figure 1). He is a right-handed chef and often raised his right arm at work. He denied fever or recent trauma. On examination, radial artery pulse was palpable. There was no cervical or axillary lymphadenopathy. His vital signs were stable, while the other physical and neurologic examinations were unremarkable. Question What is the most likely diagnosis? Compartment syndrome. Lymphedema. ‘Paget-Schroetter’ syndrome. Dermatomyositis. Answe...

Radiologic Evaluation of Conductive Hearing Loss
In the presence of an intact tympanic membrane, conductive hearing loss may be due to a wide range of conditions, include congenital or acquired ossicular chain abnormalities, complications from chronic inflammation including cholesteatoma or tympanosclerosis, neoplasms or vascular lesions in the middle ear, bone dysplasia including Paget disease or otosclerosis, or third window lesions. Imaging with CT and MRI has evolved as a powerful tool in the diagnosis and surgical planning in the evaluation of conductive hearing loss. Understanding organotropism in cancer metastasis using microphysiological systems
Lab Chip. 2024 Jan 9. doi: 10.1039/d3lc00889d. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCancer metastasis, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, remains a complex challenge in medical science. Stephen Paget's "seed and soil theory" introduced the concept of organotropism, suggesting that metastatic success depends on specific organ microenvironments. Understanding organotropism not only offers potential for curbing metastasis but also novel treatment strategies. Microphysiological systems (MPS), especially organ-on-a-chip models, have emerged as transformative tools in this quest. These systems, blending microfluidics, biology,...

Glycosylation profiles of breast cancer cells may represent clonal variations of multiple organ metastases
AbstractGlycosylation changes of cancer cells are known to be associated with malignant progression and metastases and potentially determine the organ-selective nature of metastasis as theorized by Paget (Lancet 1:571 –573, 1889). Cellular glycans play a variety of roles in the processes of metastasis and may be unique to the cells that metastasize to different organs. We analyzed the glycosylation profiles of the primary tumor and tumors metastasized to lymph node, liver, lung, brain, bone, thyroid, kidney, ad renal, small intestine and pancreas in an autopsy case of breast cancer employing a lectin microarray with 45 l...

Primary melanoma of the nipple: Report of 10 cases including coexistence with Paget's disease
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Dec 22;253:155058. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.155058. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrimary melanoma of the nipple (PMN) is exceedingly rare, with only single cases reported to date. We identified 10 patients with PMN: 5 females, 5 males, median age 55.5 years (range 29-66) at diagnosis of melanoma in situ (4 cases) or invasive melanoma (6 cases, Breslow depth 0.2 mm to 3.5 mm). Follow-up was available for all 10 patients (median 19 months, range 1-183). Nine patients had no evidence of disease; one patient died of disease (13.5 months) after presenting with a nodal metastasis. One case was exceptional,...
