Fight Aging! Newsletter, December 7th 2020
In this study, except for the reduction in body weight, the aging characteristics related to epidermal and muscle tissue in mice were significantly ameliorated in the CR group compared with the control group. Additional studies have indicated that not stem cells themselves but the stem cell microenvironment is the key factor mediating stem cell activation, proliferation and differentiation. Mitochondrial dysfunction is an important factor leading to age-related muscular atrophy. Considering the dependence of skeletal muscle on ATP, loss of mitochondrial function, which can lead to a decrease in strength and enduranc...

Towards Control Over the Dynamic Equilibrium of Bone Tissue Maintenance
Bone loses mass and strength with age, leading to the condition called osteoporosis. The extracellular matrix of bone is dynamically remodeled throughout life, built up osteoblast cells and broken down by osteoclast cells. Osteoporosis is the result of a growing imbalance in cell activity and cell creation that favors osteoclasts. There are many contributing causes, and some uncertainty of which of these causes are more or less important. The chronic inflammation that accompanies aging does appear to be important, particularly that connected to the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) of senescent cells. ...

Knitted Fabric Delivers Laser Light to Treat Skin Conditions
A number of diseases are treated using light therapy. These include acne, actinic keratosis, jaundice, Paget’s disease, and psoriasis. Modern light blankets use arrays of LEDs to produce illumination, but light emitted by LEDs can be quite weak compared to light produced by a laser. Photodynamic therapy light lamps, on the other hand, can create painful therapy sessions because of their indiscriminate and intense light. Texinov Medical Textiles, a company based outside of Lyon, France, with help from the European health consortium PHOS-ISTOS, has announced developing a knitted soft fabric called FLUXMEDICARE that ...

Risk factors for upper limb venous thrombosis – Cardiology MCQ
Risk factor/s for upper limb venous thrombosis: a) Vigorous arm exercise b) Central venous catheter c) Pacemaker / defibrillator leads d) All of the above Correct answer: d) All of the above Paget-Schroetter syndrome is the spontaneous thrombosis of the deep veins of the upper limb – axillary or subclavian vein after vigorous arm exercise. Sudden jerky movements cause the axillary vein to be crushed between the clavicle and the first rib. This can damage the intima of the vein and initiate thrombosis. Implanted central venous catheters in place for a long time can initiate upper limb venous thrombosis. In case of pac...

Ransomware, Interoperability, Power Outages, Natural Disasters, Oh My!
By MERLE BUSHKIN Question: What do ransomware, malware, the lack of medical record interoperability, power outages, floods, hurricanes and tornadoes have in common? Answer:  They make it impossible for doctors to access their patients’ electronic medical records — which can have disastrous and costly consequences for individual patients, families and our society as a whole. The irony is that this is an unintended consequence of one of the most successful, albeit forced, programs to quickly move an entire industry from paper records into the modern age of electronic records.  The theory was that when all providers kee...

This study found that though it is often associated with coronary artery disease (CAD), it can also occur in those without significant CAD. It was not specifically associated with disease of right coronary artery disease. This cardioinhibitory response may be a manifestation of the Bezold-Jarisch reflex. Bezold-Jarisch reflex inhibits sympathetic activity (sympathetic withdrawal) and increases parasympathetic activity, resulting in bradycardia, which may be associated with vasodilatation, nausea and hypotension. Bezold-Jarisch has been described in the setting of inferior wall infarction and coronary angiography. Origin...
