People Prescribed Opioids for Chronic Pain Face Multiple Barriers to Ongoing Opioid Therapy: Baseline Characteristics from the VALUE National, Observational, Study
Scant research exists on the needs of patients taking prescription opioids. VALUE is an observational, national study in which we characterized patients taking daily prescription opioids in the United States (US) during a climate of severe opioid restrictions and challenges for patients with chronic pain. Here we describe the baseline characteristics of our study sample. We recruited adults, between 18-85 years-old, with chronic non-cancer pain for>6 months and taking>10 morphine equivalent daily dose (MEDD) of prescription opioids for>3 months through online, national chronic pain networks. Fentanyl Pharmacokinetic Paradoxical in Cancer Cachexia
Transdermal fentanyl has a somewhat unpredictable pharmacokinetic profile, which becomes even more unpredictable as patients with cancer become cachectic.1 In a retrospective study involving 30 patients with cachexia and 47 patients without cachexia, a higher morphine equivalent dose (75.5 mg per day) was required for pain control and those with cachexia compared to those who were not cachectic (43.3 mg per day) when rotating to transdermal fentanyl. This increase in morphine dose equivalents correlated with reduced transepidermal water loss. (Source: Journal of Pain and Symptom Management)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1544: Analgesic Peptides: From Natural Diversity to Rational Design
Kluczyk Pain affects one-third of the global population and is a significant public health issue. The use of opioid drugs, which are the strongest painkillers, is associated with several side effects, such as tolerance, addiction, overdose, and even death. An increasing demand for novel, safer analgesic agents is a driving force for exploring natural sources of bioactive peptides with antinociceptive activity. Since the G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) play a crucial role in pain modulation, the discovery of new peptide ligands for GPCRs is a significant challenge for novel drug development. The aim of this review ...

Comparing immediate postoperative outcomes of different VATS approaches for anatomical lung resection: a single-centre retrospective study
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that incision location and the number of VATS ports is not associated with differences in the incidence of perioperative complications or postoperative pain. Given the limitations described above, further studies with longer follow-up intervals are required to explore the lasting impact of this surgical approach on quality of life.PMID:38548299 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.010622 (Source: Canadian Journal of Surgery)

Assessing for differences in opioid administration during inpatient end ‐of‐life care for patients with limited English proficiency
ConclusionLEP was not associated with differences in the amount of opioids received for patients whose EOL management involved standardized order sets for symptom management at our hospital. (Source: Journal of Hospital Medicine)
